Sources Say Live Now (Jaxson decision countdown)

So Mahaney is a miss even though they got a player just as good if not better than him. Ososbor is a miss even though Kentucky decided to not meet his ridiculous price tag? Lanier is a huge miss even though he was Tennessees the whole time? I saw somebody on here a while back say fricking Jonas aidoo was a miss, like be serious. They said Jeremey roach was a miss when Kentucky didn’t have a chance to set up a visit or do anything. Or smith is a miss because of admissions not admitting him.
Yes, we missed on Mahaney. But we got Brea. Still was a whiff. Why didn't Kentucky have a chance? Do you think Cal or any other elite recruiter would let Lanier being from TN stop them? Malik Monk went to UK over Arkansas. And his brother was a star football player there. Like I said, recruiters get recruits. They don't let these things stop them. Not withstanding NIL of course.

Lol cope, okay man I will, you do the same. Whoever Kentucky adds last, you will have some kind of problem with it, so nothing will change.
Not being combative but do you believe that our roster is exactly what Pope and staff wanted?

It’s not a whiff of Kentucky didn’t meet his NIL demands, you seem to ignore that part every time. Go look at what Lanier said, and tell me how Kentucky or BYU ever really had a chance.

Yes, I do minus Devion smith. After that he got guys who fit exactly what wants likes to do. If they back off osobor and choose not to meet Mahaney will NIL, and choose to pursue brea there is a reason for that. So to answer your question yes, I think he has gotten the players he wanted. Laneir they wanted but they probably never really stood a good chance to get him.

I don't see how anyone could be 100% satisfied with the hire . I like Pope's messaging, fans and school first. Love it. Love his passion for UK. But if passion and taglines won NCAA titles we'd have 200 of them. We're banking on this guy being our Hurley. He has 0 NCAAT wins, he coached at a midmajor and then a religious school. Unknown in recruiting circles. We very much have a guy who is learning on the job still. And when you look at the optics around his hire. With the swim team scandal coming out right after Pope was hired. Implicating Mitch Banrhart. It just screams a safe and panic hire for UK.
Me.. I'm 100% on with CMP.. And will be until he gives me a reason not to be.. Just have a good feeling with him.. Rest you beeches can just be miserable and continue crying about him..

Pope was extremely handicapped this recruiting season. He had to build an entire roster so how much NIL he could spend per player was limited. He also was a little late to the transfer portal game and establishing relationships early is key. Not to mention he's a first year coach at UK, recruits haven't been able to see what he's capable of yet on the big stage. If this time next year, he hasn't been able to land more big time targets that he goes after, I'll be right there with you in being concerned. But given all the cards he was dealt for this year, I think he did a solid job.

He did do a good job. I was just talking about his inability to land a ''big fish''. I.E. one last player. I have said I think year 2 will tell us how Pope can recruit. He came in at a weird time. A full recruiting cycle will tell us a lot.

Osobor can be considered a miss, but his price tag, coupled with the fact we got a multi-year guy instead, helps matters. Washington will still be mostly irrelevant with Osobor.

UK, UConn, no one was getting BOTH Mahaney & Brea. It was one or the other. Many of us preferred Brea.

The staff went with Brea when Mahaney picked UConn, Butler when the academic stuff didn’t work out with D Smith, and Garrison when Osobor planned on continuing to take visits and wanted big NIL (likely always Washington).

Richie Saunders visited. Lanier visited.

The staff definitely missed on some guys, but the only one that really hurt so far was not getting D Smith. Still need another wing scorer so Lanier/Robinson were also important recruits depending on if Robinson is staying or not.

People expect UK to hire a new coach with 0 players, and rely exclusively on the transfer portal to build a roster that can compete for a title, while battling the top programs in the country loaded with NIL money to do so. Yeah, I'd say that's unrealistic for year 1.

I said it once, and I'll say it all season - UK gets in the tournament in year 1 and I'm good. The roster is good enough for that. But there is no explosive go-to scorer and that's not really debatable.

I don't care what Pope said at the presser - of COURSE he's going to say the goal is to win a title. No coach is going to get up there and say, "Well, we just need to do the best we can do next year. I hope we make the tournament."

UK has as much nil money as anyone. That definitely isn't an excuse.

I like our roster fine but given the resources we missed on a role we shouldn't have missed. They can still pull someone but their top targets are gone.

Moving forward I think ab3 will have us in with some elite freshman that will help. Just not this year.

Cal lost plenty of recruiting battles over the years
Mainly to K.
Luke Kennard recruitment comes to mind.
Kid grew up a UK fan plus had proximity to his home as a plus but Cal couldn't get it done.
Jaylen Brown?
Just a different kid who was never going to buy into Cal's pitch.
Bamba?
Signed players that he (Cal) thought he wanted to play with but he still went elsewhere.
One thing I've learned is never take a kids interview with recruiting websites as absolute truth.

With little to talk about, this Sources Say devolved into a long discussion about many wide off topics. Jack noted he would prefer a 5-year prison term over being in a 10-year coma (spoiler alert: Jack's preferred introduction to prison is via a bank robbery). Also noted that cereal is a type of soup. Many more truths uncovered.

Didn't know Kennard was a UK fan.

If you are trying to build a winner, you need winners, which is why I would love to add Poplar. He was a starter on a Final Four team in ‘23. So he has four NCAA tourney wins on his resume. I would take Robinson because he played for Pope, but Poplar is a proven winner and I think that’s an overlooked stat.
The winner we needed is in charge. The rear will follow.

Having as much NIL money as anyone doesn't mean we abandon principles for guys asking way over their value.

Osobor
Mahaney
Lanier

You can't force players to commit.

I still believe a lot of that was Nike and various forms of cheating, tampering, etc.

Cal was basically playing a near-perfect game of getting recruits to the NBA, almost no matter what they did at UK. It was almost automatic. You mean to tell me that when Coach K got jealous of this success, he was able to just "convince" players he could do the same, despite having never proven it otherwise? Please.

Funny thing is.. just look at how man whifs Duke had with elite recruits and NBA success. It's literally Jason Tatum and... and.... some middling guys like the Jones twins, Brandon Ingram, Zion's fat ass. Here's a name that you already forgot about: Vernon Carey. Coach K seems to have found the guys who wanted the easiest path, the path of least resistance. And it's alarming how many of them weren't able to make it once they got to the "real world" aka the NBA.

Everyone being negative right now are the normal RR trolls. Somehow our fanbase took the 6th man on BYU and are making him out as a make or break player and all of a sudden Pope hire is a mistake and we are going to the NIT. 😆
Come on. Tell me you're not disappointed in this recruiting offseason.

He hasn’t coached one game here yet, let alone been allowed time to build his roster without having to scramble to do it, before you are bashing him already? Why do you follow UK if it brings you this much misery?
UK brings me no misery, but if you can't handle the reality that we've struck out on every top 20 portal transfer, maybe you should stay away from the conversation instead of acting like there's only one discussion to be had.

I support Pope, but he hasn't brought in an elite portal guy yet. Was he dealt a bad hand? Yes. Will he get better? Yes.

Is it okay to point out all of that without being sanctioned as a guy who's "bashing" him? Only if the reader on the side of the post has a broad perspective.

It’s because of the way Calipari left and how long Pope had to build his roster. Had the transition been different things might have been different for a guy like McKneely or even Lanier. But recruiting is a game of relationships and with the NIL the way it is I never thought this season would be a title year.

Just listen to some of this stuff. I realize a few in this thread are trolls but there’s also a few that are real fans who believe Pope should have built a CHAMPIONSHIP ROSTER in A MONTH on this job. It’s not even close to being realistic. Fairly stupid honestly.

I don’t know if Pope is going to work, I think chances are he will. Highly intelligent guy with a blue blood and a winners pedigree. But I do know I’m not making a decision based on his inability to perform magic and get McKneely or Lanier on campus. Just too much working against that.
Another factor is that most people here remember what it was like when Calipari arrived. He brought Bledsoe, Wall, and Boogie with him. Lexington was a circus and the hype was through the roof. Our flameout in the EE was a different story, but we're only in the recruiting season atm, so that's all we can compare right now. I see this as a 20 win, sweet sixteen ceiling team. People are disappointed because they are comparing the level of hype.

Great point. Kyrie Irving and Paolo Banchero are definitely considered "middling" talent.

We have a top 20 portal transfer? Maybe.

I'm optimistic that Robinson is coming back to college (maybe it's just not public yet) or Wooga.

I'd be cool with either. I actually am getting used to the idea of Wooga and Riley closing out this group. Fingers crossed.

I think Lineski's biggest point was that Duke has been rather underwhelming when it comes to landing elite players and seeing them transition to the NBA. For all the help that Nike gave them (which was historically monumental), the most Duke could say at the end of it was that they had accumulated maybe five guys worthy of All-Star consideration - Kyrie, Tatum, Zion, and Banchero, and Ingram.

The rest of their guys have been mostly duds, and even Zion is looking less and less like the all-universe player he was promoted to be.

Because Barnhart himself said we had $4 million committed to basketball.

Then we found out later than an additional $800,000 was committed annually from the fans. That's a minimum of $4.8 million.
It's not a use it or lose it situation.
Just because the money has been donated doesn't mean the coach doesn't have a responsibility to spend it wisely.
You can't let a player name his price(JQ, Osobor).

Agree, there is also Jamir Watkins and Cedric coward still left. Kyle Tucker just tweeted about Watkins, if Kentucky were to go after him I wouldn’t be mad.

Seem to be a few that were expecting Pope to roll in, get a bunch of guns to win it all this upcoming season.

That very, very seldom happens.
It's fine to dream, but this is kind of the same as getting a bunch of NBA bound frosh and running the table. That seldom happens either.

This is about rebuilding a program and changing a culture. Three or four years from now the negatives are warranted if there is a UofL level meltdown that shows no sign of turning a corner.

This particular rebuild is one that fans that have been around 20+ years can relate to. Those fans from the Calipari years may struggle for a little to grab hold of, and that's understandable.

Give it a chance folks. Three or four years may seem like eternity, but it can be worth the wait.

I don't think it should take 3 or 4 years for UK to at least compete for a Final 4.
