Sounds like Shaka Smart to Texas.

Good move by Smart. IMHO his star was starting to dim a little bit, and if he waited much longer, good teams would stop calling. Being in a power conference with loads of cash to spend sounded too good for him to pass up this time.

Totally agree. It felt like his stock was dropping the last year or so.

Not a home run but a wait and see deal for Texas. They could easily be a three sport powerhouse with the right coaches.

Great move on his part and Texas, now recruit and beat Self every year and its all good.
Not sure if it is or not.

Here's to hoping he can challenge KU for the holy grail of basketball.... the Big 12 championship.

Smart had to make the move. He is starting to look like he's overrated.

I think he could easily be fired in 5 years. He better do better than Barnes because Texas really liked him. His leash won't be as long imo.

Yep. Smart had one successful run in 2011 when most experts didn't think they should have got in the tournament. They ended up getting to the Final Four but since then?

He hasn't made a single Sweet 16 and looks like a one hit wonder.

Final four. Then runner up in the Atlantic 10 for three years. This season he won the conference tournament. He's no flash in the pan. He's a sure thing. That precious Kansas streak will end next year.

He was at frickin' VCU.

VCU prior to Shaka Smart- 9 NCAA Tournament appearances, 0 trips past the 2nd round.

You and all the other rocket scientists in this thread also fail to mention that Smart has won nearly 75% (163-56) of his games, and never failed to win at least 26 games for 6 straight years now. And the last 3 of those years came after VCU stepped up from the Colonial to the A10. The school that's hiring, him BTW, hasn't accomplished anywhere near that much the last 6 years. Which is why they're hiring him.

Also BTW, Archie Miller, who seems to inspire some very passionate love on this board (and also happens to have been coaching in the same conference as Smart the last 3 years) is 90-47 in 4 years.

I swear, some people have the attention span of a gnat. You saw it on this board last year, when all of the sudden John Calipari, a year and a half removed from a 38-2 national title team, couldn't coach (according to some very vocal people). And you see it in this thread. "OK, you made the FF with a school out of the Colonial. But all you did after that was make the tournament 4 years in a row and average 27 wins a year? You suck".

Settle down. I simply stated a fact. His appeal has dimmed quite a bit. How is that undeniable? Also, you can't have it both ways. You can't excuse his four straight first weekend exits by saying "he's at freaking VCU" and then turn around and cite 26 win seasons when he's at, in your words "freaking VCU."

You stated 0 facts. How can "his appeal has dimmed quite a bit" be true when he just landed one of the bigger jobs in the sport?

You can't have that both ways.

His appeal dimmed to you, because you either had wildly unrealistic expectations, or because you weren't paying attention. For people who were paying attention, and people who realize that a few early losses in the NCAA Tournament mean next to nothing, especially at a school like VCU, yes, it is very deniable that his appeal dimmed quite a bit. He was still very, very much on the radar as a guy with a bright future. Which is why Texas hired him.
