Skal eligible

Do you think Skal Labissiere will be cleared to play this year

Not one person on this board believes you are a Kentucky fan. Prepare to be disappointed when Skal is cleared and ready to play in the opening game. I hope you aren't any older than 14 if you are still trying to fake an identity on a basketball fan site.

Look closely at the questions: There is nothing in them that would indicate Skal received anything, or knew of any effort to use him to make a cash grab. Doing this now has the feeling of the NCAA just doing its final due diligence before confirming his eligibility. If there was a substantive allegation on the table the NCAA would have taken it up months ago.
Hey I'm a huge UK fan and I'm worried. The handler was sketchy from the go. Cam newtons people made it very hard to get a kid eligible when faced with these rumors/allegations

As bad as I hate to agree with somebody from Duke....Jay Williams is right on the money with his comments at our combine. Who cares. Even if a guy did get money how is that cheating? BUT SKAL DID NOT GET NO DAMN MONEY. HE DID NOTHING WRONG!!!!

Everyone with a top 50 prospect at some point asks those questions.... The only damn difference is, the AAU or high school coach doesn't play vengeful d*ck face and tries to screw the kid over.

There are ways within the rules for AAU and High school coaches to make money off of their players...... Of course a guardian is going to ask if there are ways within the rules to do the same

After reading the article about his life in Haiti, the earthquake, his move to the United States to pursue his dream and subsequent hard work----it would be a travesty if the NCAA declares him ineligible. An absolute travesty.

If you haven't read the article, do so. You'll respect and appreciate this kid even more.

Already had some buddies who are UL fans tell me how concerned I should be. They are clinging at this like their life depends on it trying to keep their own ordeal out of the light.
Right - and think about it - worst case scenario? Skal is never eligible, NCAA shows their ass again for punishing a Haitian refugee because his handler was a dope even though the kid never got paid. We are still a top 15 team.

That's the worst possible thing that could happen to us, and they still have to deal with the fact that they hired hookers for recruits.

Talk about looking for a silver lining on a stormcloud.

Why is everybody worrying about it? If it happens, it happens.
"Worrying is stupid. It's like walking around with an umbrella waiting for it to rain." -Wiz Khalifa

If it's a violation to ask for money without actually receiving it, would it be a violation if Hamilton has asked for a pet pony and his very own Millennium Falcon?

I mean, if merely asking a violation, then any conversation - even in jest - regarding impermissible benefits of any kind would be a violation, would it not?

At what point does the NCAA draw the line? They don't seem to have any real basis for anything, which is why they've become a comedic shite hole of an organization.

These reports quoting the AAU coach that Skal's guardian reached out for money or help signing a shoe deal or whatever were out before Kentucky signed him.

I believe Kentucky's very able compliance department assessed this situation before okaying his signing, with full knowledge of the facts concerning Easterwood and Hamilton and the NCAA rules, and of any possible culpability by Skal. And consistently the message from UK has been that there would be no problem, and he would play.

The only thing that would concern me is new information, something we'd never heard before, not the NCAA finally crossing the t's and dotting the i's on old information.
Not to mention Sandy Bell having former NCAA officials working under her. The only way he will sit is if there is a money trail.

Meanwhile, back at NCAA Happy Camp...

Prostitutes at Louisville - check
Potential rapists run free at Duke and now Maryland - check
Worst academic scandal of the century at UNC - check
Kansas plays an ineligible player half the season with no vacating of wins - check

No investigation worth a damn in any of these cases.

But...

Let's go after the earthquake victim who didn't take a dollar.

In all fairness, as much as I may hate Duke as a program, the Duke Lacrosse accusations were proven to be 100% Grade-A BS.

UK needs to lawyer up and fight this. If it comes to that.

From a PR perspective, the NCAA loses this, in a big, big way. It is a FACT that Skal is a Haitian kid who survived the earthquake (in which 100,000 to 160,000 died), and came to the US by the first means that presented itself. If you want to screw with his life because of things he wasn't directly involved in, then you (you being the NCAA, in this case) need to explain exactly why it's necessary to do so. And it damn well better be a good explanation. Otherwise, you suck in a way that a whole lot of people aren't going to be willing to accept. Meaning you undermine your own legitimacy by making yourself look like arbitrary, highly politicized, jackasses.

I think the death toll was closer to 220-240k, iirc.

Does it really matter if the POS guardian asked? The issue is what did he get, if anything, and then how that directly affects Skal.

If Skal never received any compensation or had any grade changes then there's nothing the NCAA can do.

To make a player ineligible then there has to be money, benefits, or undeserving grades to the player.

This sounds like his handler is a POS.

As we have seen with some schools, undeserving grades won't get you into big trouble. You just have to be at SMU to get into big trouble.

Here's a link to the SI article:

http://www.si.com/college-basketbal...cats-freshman-haiti-earthquake?xid=nl_siextra

If you read this it just seems impossible that the NCAA wants to get into a fight with Skal right now. It would just be horrible, terrible, negative publicity for them.

This.

I don't trust the ncaa to be fair or unbiased toward anyone associated with Cal or UK. However, Skal is potentially THE feel good story for March. They'll run min-specials and do interviews with him. He's already gotten great press in that SI article, and these stories will continue and intensify if we have a strong season and make a run.

I don't believe Skal has done anything wrong, but the NCAA is wildly inconsistent. His guilt or innocence may not matter to them. But his backstory just might, because it has the potential to make them money.

What concerns me is the NCAA clearing him, a la Rose, then finding out later there was reason to rule him inelegible and then we potentially forfeit a final four or even a title. I just hope Cal and Sandy has this covered.

I fully expect the NCAA to screw Skal and Cal/UK re: eligibility. Everyone on this board should expect the same.

Re: Newton, that was football so the SEC put its influence/weight to work and he remained eligible. This is basketball so office probably doesn't care as much. IMO

Man, if that happened.. I would think The University of Kentucky as a whole would just shrug their shoulders and celebrate it anyways. The NCAA is a total farce at this point, so who cares what they think about wins and titles. Parades, hang a banner anyways.. it's a perfectly legit win, just as Memphis' title run.

"Yeah, we're celebrating this anyways, and it will always be out 9th title... Oh, you're unhappy about it? So what more are you going to do to us that you haven't already over the past decade?"

It gets so annoying when people bring up Kanter. I could understand if the two cases were anything alike, but they are nothing alike. With Kanter, even though none of us agreed with it, we at least understood the reasoning behind it. This kid has never took money from any pro team. His handler asked for ways to make money from the kid? So what. Unless you can prove this kid got money, how can he be punished? It's not like he can help what his handler is saying to people. I could be wrong and shocked if he's not cleared, but I doubt it. College basketball needs all the top talent they can get their hands on and this kid is one of the very best. Until the NCAA has proof of wrong doing by the kid, clear him already and let's get started on bringing home #9.

"The ncaa is tearing their hair out about ky's streak, they want K to be the face of the ncaa, not cal" steven a smith

Not going to read thru this thread, but two words - Cam Newton.

Unless the NCAA can show money changed hands, this all means nothing, and I'm not sure it would effect Skal's eligibility even then if one applies the Newton and McLemore rule.

If it does, it's a travesty. Skal is a great kid, and shouldn't be penalized if someone profited off him and Skal did not.

I see lots of people saying ”He's a great kid” and ”Why are they doing this to Skal".. This has zero to do with Skal, his handler, his AAU coach, or any amount of money..

You know what it's about.. The NCAA doesn't care about Skal's Eligibility. Something about ”breaking a few eggs to make an omelet”..

Hey guys, does anyone know where I can get some money to give to every Duke player? Along the same lines, how can I get every one of the players shoe deals?

I'm asking for a friend.

At what fkng point to they start worrying about shit that ACTUALLY matters? I MEAN WTF??? UNC????????? TARDS???????????? HELLO????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I think Cal should do what is riffle Skal. If that means playing him so he can showcase his skills, gain experience- then do it. Don't worry about the NCAA. They haven't proven anything. I also think that UK should wage an all out PR war on the issue.

Let the NCAA find a way to punish the the guardian. Kids should not be on trial. Period.

Any sliver of a problem and Emmert's history is that he will screw us royally. For Kanter to be denied while UNC is running around cheating on a scale that is nearly incomprehensible is infuriating. Whatever we can do as an institution up to and including having our Congressmen and Senators ask questions about the NCAA's pious double standards should be undertaken. We should lawyer up to the fullest extent possible and really go after these bast&^ds. UK Basketball is far bigger than just our flagship University, it is a precious cherished tradition in this state that is important to Kentuckians in every corner of the state extending even to those that will never set foot on the campus. For us to allow what amounts to the legacy of our people to be toyed with by a bunch of callous cheating biased jerks should no longer be tolerated without a withering sustained aggressive response and tough political questions about basic fairness on the way the NCAA conducts its business.

The new age Mark Twain speaks.

NCAA is just concerned about them making all the money they can off the athletes.
That is a prime consideration, no doubt... but they have clearly shown they also have an agenda and they don't mind if it makes them look plainly biased, either. My favorite example is the NCAA sending a demand letter to Miami that said that if their ex-players did not cooperate with NCAA investigators then the NCAA would take that as a sign of guilt. Then they turn around and decide that since Lance Thomas was no longer at Duke they were powerless to do anything even though it was blatantly obvious that Thomas got a loan from a jewelry store that would never be given to your average college student walking in off the street.

I seem to recall an OSU professor and a couple others that were studying the history of the NCAA in comparing the punishments handed down and how inconsistent they have been. I wonder if that has been completed and/or what came of it?
