First, I get that defense, not offense, is our primary issue.

With that said, are Cal and these coaches even trying to get Reed more open looks and to attack the basket?

It seems Tre has a green light and Reeves, Dilly, and DJ are encouraged/allowed to be volume shooters, but Reed plays high minutes again, while only attempting five shots.

I’m just not understanding why the most efficient player in college basketball is 6th on our team in FGA.

Shep is averaging 4.3 FGA and 10 points per game during SEC play. His shooting load has definitely diminished. It's impossible at this moment to say for certain whether its coaching, lineup and philosophical choices by Cal, or if it's personal. He could be feeling out his boundaries in conference play.

He passed up at least 2 good looks from 3 today. That's on him. And at least spell his name right..

Have you considered that him being 6th in FGA helps explain WHY he’s so efficient?

Reed has that stupendous efficiency rate in significant part because he’s very careful about not taking bad shots. It’ll drop if gets more aggressive hunting shots.

He does require a little bit more space/time to get the shot off than the other guards. I think that’s a big part of it

I did notice that he passed on at least 3 open looks today. I think he's really just trying to be unselfish in a way to help his team. But when you're shooting at an unreal clip from 3 you have to take any wide open look. Anyone else notice (and I'm not blaming them) since we got our bigs back, the offense hasn't been as free flowing and the ball movement not fluid or crisp? The ball movement seemed to just be must quicker with less turnovers. JMHO

Are we supposed to infer something from three games? How about this;

He’s taken 13 shots in those three games. Four players took 13 or more shots today! And this is the point of my thread.

Reeds efficiency is in part a result of not taking bad shots and not getting his shot off the dribble at the end of the clock. Defenses have also begun to shade him. He can’t get his shot like Rob and Reeves and DJ. As someone else mentioned his efficiency will diminish greatly if he has to take the shots at the end of the clock when we get nothing out of what little we run.

He doesn’t fit the CCC agenda

So Cal is creating plays to get every player on the team shots except for Reed? People really believe this, it’s astonishing.

Any they say UK fans are ignorant rednecks….no, not at all.

I think Reed is making what he thinks is the best decision given what he observes, his skills, and how he has been coached. Reed passes up open shots because he thinks it’s a good choice. Players aren’t out there intentionally trying to fail.

The point of you thread is to blame coaching for Reed's lack of shooting when it's clear he's the one passing up open shots.

Reed is playing GREAT. He is getting the most out of his game. Would like to see him develop an off the dribble out move like Mark Price runner. He is going to need it to grow as a player.

He had 2 or 3 open looks and refused to take them.

Fire Cal!!!

Ever year we have a great shooter we cant get shots for and every year people line up to say A). heck hes open hes just passing up shots B). it certainly isnt Cals fault . SMH
Yes they do. I call these guys “Cal’s dingleberries.”

In this thread, they keep making the case that he passed up two or three shots. OK let’s say that that is the case. If he’d had taken those shots, he still would’ve taken half as many shots as DJ, Dilly, and Reeves and five fewer than Tre.

So Cal found shots for Mitchell, Edwards, Reeves, Wagner, Dilly, Bradshaw and Ugo (all took more shots than Reed in the last two games) but is purposely not finding shots or can’t find them for Reed?

You (and others on here) really believe this? Like for real? This is a Cal problem?

Reed hit a few tough shots with a hand in his face too so he doesn’t need to be wide open to get his shot off .

Not even just Reed but it would be nice if our guys had the mentality that Taylor and Radford had today . Sometimes guys need to shoot 20+ times and take over a game. This team may be too unselfish .

I think some players benefit from sets being ran to get them a particular shot , as opposed to great 1 on 1 guys getting their own shots .. Dillys 3 difficult 3's were not Cal drawing up something . Wagner is strictly a 1 on 1 guy . Just my opinion but Cal doesnt run an offense to get anyone shots . He just puts puts guys in iso after a pic possibly to get them in position where they might score . Shep isnt a 1 on 1 guy . Its about that end of game , last 2 minutes where you really REALLY need your best player to get a shot hes comfortable with . Cal doesnt do that worth a cfrap .

All those guys you mentioned look for their shot first. Reed looks for others first. When you look for your shot first, you will shoot more.

Shepherd is great at not forcing things. The other guards are really good with their ability to make tough shots, especially Dillingham.. i think it’s more a function of Shepherd being a total team player and always looking to get the best shot possible at all times.

Well, maybe somebody needs to inform him that his taking a three with a hand his face is better at this point than DJ or Trey taking threes of any variety.

It isn't Reed's game to shoot 15 or 20 times. He has shot 15+ times once this year. He played for 25 minutes and took 1 shot vs. St. Joe's.

Reed isn't particularly explosive off dribble. He uses angles and picks his spots.

Great player, I don't ever see him being a guy that hunts for his own consistently. He is constantly looking for the "best" shot not "his" shot.

Also, this could explain Shep’s shooting pattern somewhat, we don’t really seem to have roles for our guards. Who is the primary ball handler, for example? It depends on who is in the game and their whim in the moment. Is it Shep? Is it Dilly? Is it DJ? I don’t really know play to play.

When we’ve had teams with a collection 3 or more quality guards, like in 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2017, we had a guy who would be the primary ball handler 80+% of the time they were in the game. This year, we have 3 guys who at any given time could be the point and their personality in that role is totally different. It’s like trying to play 3 different offenses.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Shep had wildly different shooting rates depending on who was the PG while he’s on the court.

That’s fine but UK does nothing in March when Justin Edwards takes more shots than Reed Sheppard. When looking back, it will be like Booker coming off the bench watching others force multiple shot clock violations in a row in a Final Four game.

Or if we won by one in regulation today nobody is even talking about this topic.

Tough loss on the road in SEC. Lots of basketball left.

He should be taking 10-12 shot attempts a game
