Believe with the right coaching we had the talent to make a run this year but only to the Sweet 16. That talent was also experienced as the only freshman we counted on was Ty Ty.. But we really had seven players in their 1st year at UK. For the past several years we have soured on the one and done players because they were freshman. Duke has been more successful but with Zion and crew they could not capture a title. I have been paying little attention to all the transfers that may come to UK for next season because CCC will still be at the helm and a program comprised of either 1st year freshman or 1st year experienced players does not a ”TEAM” make
Kansas had talent but nowhere near what Duke, UK, or Gonzaga had yet they won the championship. What they did have was experience. Some will argue that this crazy transfer portal will never allow teams to carry most of their roster intact the next year and that may be true. But Cal does not even try IMO. If you are not a 5-Star look elsewhere. I go back to the late 60’s when few transferred and no one went to the NBA. Those days are gone but what should our head coach be doing given today’s environment. I think the answer can be found with the 1998 championship Wildcats. That year we had players with various skills And they played well together. No superstars worrying about their draft status. Nazr and Jamaal had long NBA careers but they shared a position. Shep had a short time in the league but was a shooter, ball handler, and good rebounder. Who was more important than Wayne Turne?! Padgett, Edwards, and Mills were role players but each contributed with different skill sets and I would say without any one of these 3, we could not have won the title. That team meshed even with a new head coach. .CCC strives to collect the most talent(wingspan, vertical jump, athleticism) are the most important factors to him.
wow, if they can shoot, pass, dr
Next year will probably be similar to this year in that we will be a good SEC team, but not THE SEC team, make the tournament and win a game (hopefully) or two. Without Oscar, the season could be ugly. CCC will never change; little offensive scheme, no inbounds plays, stomping the floor and screaming GO and RUN everytime we get a defensive reboun Etc etc. So in my final (long winded analysis )I do not think it makes much difference who we pull in from the transfer portal. It will be a team of players in their first year who will not have time to gel in their 1-year stay. We need a new start with a new head coach and unless the Lakers or Knicks help us out, Cal is here to stay for a few more years and I could write this same post then and be fairly accurate
