My guess is that Cal does things like this for these kids to curry favors with coaches and handlers.

And folks scoffed at my - albeit unrealistic - idea that Cal 's pay should be based on wins. My entire point was that Cal is paid to win games and his coaching, recruiting, and most importantly results should reflect that.

What plays out every year is if a kid is a first round draft pick and eligible for the draft he leaves. People that think a top five pick in next years draft is staying here, or that Cal would allow him to stay is absolutely insane to me.
I hope he plays because I think the team needs what he can bring. I’m not worried about being right or wrong.
I see this no different than discussing winning a national championship all year and then falling short. Was is a waste to talk about it?
I'll answer a couple of those questions .. if. he refuses to play in any game , in any scenario ( please dont even even compare to Allen not going in for 54 seconds) then YES .. he should be shown the door . Its simply setting a precedent . You dont come here and get our facilities and our NIL deals and take a spot that could have went to a kid really wanting to play here if you wont take the court .
It has nothing to do with showing any player who the boss is .. if you are a straight shooter and are a man of your word , there is no questioning who the boss is in a player / coach relationship ( in college ) Is it a matter of principle ? well it is for me . I'd like to think anyone with a functioning brain would agree . Players play . Is that really a hard concept ? I guess it could be , in 2022 we have people arguing who uses what restroom and guys are competing against women in sports under the guise of " fairness".

Boston and Askew cost us any chance we had at winning games last year and Askew was still supposed to he in HS. If you're going to do this, you should be able to see a high school junior shouldn't be reclassing to run point at UK. What a bad decision that was.
Then, he doubled down and played him 35mpg until it was way too late to save the season. Then he moved Davion to point, something he should have done in November.

Mintz took over somewhere around the 23 game mark and there was a huge improvement. It wasn't close and Mintz isn’t even a pg.
Not only that, but Cal should have been smarter than that. Askew was a junior in HS and was nowhere near prepared to be running pg at KY. Cal should have recruited Hagans back, or found someone better in the portal.

Not only that, but the freshmen he has brought in post 2014, are not the same caliber as they were from 09-14, so again, if you're going to play this one-and-done game, you better be great at it every year, this ain't Memphis or UMass.

They were helped by having veterans. 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017 all had veterans mixed with highly talented freshmen.
First round pick freshmen. You either get transcendent players, or you get juniors and seniors. You can't build your foundation with mud.
The game changed in recent years. Michigan and Memphis have young studs for a foundation, look what’s happening. Look what happened to us last year.

They were, but they were still really all OAD teams in essence, the main contributors on those teams where all freshman. We have actually never had teams with all freshman leading the charge outside of maybe the SGA team. Even last year had guys like Sarr and Keion.
Ok... but you trying to use this specific team as evidence to show the change is a slippery slope. The only reason it was able to happen was because of the transfer portal rule opening up to us having Oscar and Shavir. How do you want Cal to recruit? Personally I want him to recruit the best players whether that be in the transfer portal or from high school. Sure, hes been missing the cream of the crop recently, but that doesn't mean he shouldn't go after the next group of guys just because they aren't "transcendant".

You will recall that there is a thread probably on page 2 saying if Cal doesn't play Sharpe this season he should be fired. So yes, I stand by that; however, I now do not believe Cal ever had any intention of playing Sharpe at all.

Talent wins basketball games Jeff. Nothings changed from the beginning of basketball until now.
Yeah there's highly rated recruits that don't pan out for whatever reason. It happens. But there's also a ton of high level prospects that do become good college basketball players.
Boston and Askew cost us chances to win ballgames? Yeah they didn't produce. But neither did Sarr. No one on that team really performed. And Clarke obviously injured didn't help matters. That team didn't win many basketball games because we had a roster of mediocrity. That's all. You can't pin that on two players.
This current team is good. Because it has NBA prospects. Tyty is going to get drafted at some point. Oscar is going to get drafted. Wheeler is going to get drafted IMO.
Talent trumps everything. No team in college basketball wins without talent. None.
If we gave up on freshman players with NBA level talent after half a season, we would have missed out on some amazing careers here at UK IMO.

Also maybe Boston and Askew didn't get a lot of mins because they were 5 star recruits. Maybe they got a lot of mins because we didn't have a viable option on the bench to replace those mins.
That's what Cal thought of Allen. That as bad as Askew and Boston were, he still thought they were better options to win basketball games than Allen. And honestly TBF not to rag on Allen but he hasn't exactly done anything this season to disprove that.

We won the title because there was an NBA lockout and 3 players returned that probably wouldn't have.
2012 doesn't win a title if Lamb, Miller and especially Jones don't come back.
I dont get it because no one here has clamored for a roster with literally all freshman as key contributors, and Cal has never had a team in his tenure here like that except maybe the SGA team.

I mean we've had people leave early some of which should not have gone but we've also had many come back.
The only way where you could be up in arms with Cal about that situation is if he literally recruited Sharpe 100% knowing that he would never play for us. And if you really believe that then it is clear that you have an agenda against Cal.
