For starters, the downside is that Sharpe is benefitting from the resources available at UK (notoriety, NIL, nutrition, weight training, practice development, and individual development) with no reciprocal benefit to UK. In fact, those who argue that UK loses nothing if Sharpe never plays at UK probably have not considered that the videos of his individual workouts we were all drooling over a few days ago, in hindsight, were reps that a player who actually plays may not be getting. Time is a limited commodity with regard to coaching instruction. If it turns out that Cal knew Sharpe would never play, the time spent coaching Sharpe is time lost in coaching a kid who might actually contribute to winning games in the here-and-now. I'm pretty sure players like Hopkins, Collins or Allen might benefit (and likewise, the team would benefit) from some of the extra work and attention that Sharpe is getting.
