If this kid leaves for the NBA after leaving high school early, only practicing with UK for a month or so, can make a ton of money with the NIL, can get drafted in the top 10-15, who can blame him? It is the system we have now called "college basketball".
Players in both football and basketball are using the NCAA like some free agency in pro sports. Come get your NIL, leave high school early, practice with the team and get drafted. What a system we have.
What is really a joke is how the NCAA and schools refer to these kids as "student-athletes".
Will we ever have see another players jersey hung in the rafters? Does anyone still care about tradition? Does anyone besides me miss Senior Night where they sing MY Old Kentucky Home and everyone is crying?
College sports is all about business and players making money. UK basketball is just a tool for players to use to benefit themselves. It is not just UK basketball being done this way; it is all over in both major sports.
I had a conversation with my wife over the weekend about maybe selling all my UK memorabilia. She was stunned at first. I like to think I have a very nice collection of stuff from the 40's thru nowadays. Not shit you buy in some Walmart or Fanatics store on the internet. When she asked me why would I think this I told her that my idea of leaving all this to my two daughters for my grandkids does not mean as much now; that kids today do not understand UK basketball like I do and have the love we have for it. It is all flash and sparkle now.
When I watch Wheeler play I remember days watching guys like Dicky Beal; small, fast, and just love playing. Wheeler knows he will never see the NBA and is enjoying playing in college. TyTy is really good. Super glad he is playing for UK but honestly, will he ever be remembered in 10 years from now like we remember old UK players?
If this Sharpe kid plays, OK, just another nail in the coffin of what used to be college basketball. Will anyone really consider him a UK player if he leaves this year? So why get all upset? It is what we have these days.
If this works out for the kid, odds are there will be others to follow. I can't put all the blame of Coach Cal. He is only doing what others are doing these days.
It is a business not a sport anymore.
No matter what, I will cheer my Cats on whomever they are. Just don't see much new stuff being added to my collection unless we win a National Championship.
