Reds

EDC is fast but he’s also a very dumb base runner! You just can’t get thrown out trying to tag up from first on a fly to the right fielder. 😡
I agree, piss poor decision straight out of the Nick Senzel School of Base Running but I would
be curious to know what the 1st base coach, standing 3 feet from him, was telling him, if anything. Costly, hopefully he learns from it.

I’ve got tickets to 9/4 game but looks like Reds might be out of the running by then unless things turnaround in the next couple games!

Santillan today(8/16): two thirds of an inning, 2 hits, 2 BB, no Ks, 3 runs.

Call up Marte please.

Brett Kennedy rumored to be in the rotation, at least until Lodolo & Lively are back since Greene is expected to slide in where Weaver was. IMO, after 2 solid outings vs the Nationals & Pirates, Kennedy should have been given more of a chance over Weaver who clearly was never the answer outside of a couple of starts literally. Reds won in spite of him most of the time. This is addition by subtraction. Still not going to fix the offensive woes of the Reds. Only time and patience or wait until the offseason to make any necessary changes. They are who they are at this point and would be shocked if anyone else of note makes their MLB Debut like Blake Dunn or Noelvi Marte. Likely to get Barrero & Senzel as the position players once the rosters expand and this very well could be it for those 2 as one last shot in Cincinnati before moving on at the end of the season. Non-tender Senzel, as far as Barrero stuck with him for a few more years within the organization. Reds may try to package him though he isn't good enough to be the centerpiece of any trade.

Don't see Senzel has a future in Cincy, he's used up his 9-Lives, he has zero value. He's now playing RF at AAA but in the ML he was a defensive liability frequently getting poor jumps, missing cutoff men or throwing to wrong bases. While he had success early in the year vs LHP he lost well over 100 points on his BA the last month or so vs LHP plus he's hitting less that .180 vs RHP. If all that isn't enough he's poison in the clubhouse.

Barrero, while maybe not the centerpiece of a trade, does have value. After ML struggle in the first half he goes to AAA, hits about .280 with 10 HRs/15 or so SBs in limited play....plus he's only 25. He's earned a shot somewhere.

Everything you say about Nick Senzel can be said of Jose Barrero if you are being fair and objective. Barrero has used up his chances up here too. He has yet to hit a home run in Great American Ballpark and 25 years old isn't exactly young for a guy who has played parts of 4 seasons now. Senzel had major injuries too so that excuse on Barrero people use is a wash. It's past time to shit or get off the pot for him. Teams don't need to be convinced of his numbers in AAA which are below where he was 2 years ago in the minors, they need to see it at the MLB level. Sadly, he has only contributed a fraction of what Senzel has done in a Reds uniform which is nothing to crow about. Yeah, I'll agree he should get a shot somewhere, just not here. 2023 should be it for the 2 of these guys in Cincinnati.

They both need to join Luke Weaver and don't come back.

It's quite simple, who are they going to play over here at this point without keeping down more deserving prospects who are close to joining the Reds? No spots in the infield plus Marte barring some unforeseen circumstances will be better than both. Had their chances in the outfield and would not bench Fraley, Friedl, Benson or Steer plus Fairchild does enough to stay above them. He is a natural outfielder and there is a reason he is up here and they aren't.

7-2 Reds Win!

See what happens when you play your best players, take a break from shaking the lineup all around playing the matchups. They win! While Fraley is out, Fairchild is a more stable option in the outfield of the 3 not considering the Steer experiment in LF. Friedl needs to remain the leadoff hitter.

Good job Reds!! 11 hits, solid start for Abbott and the bullpen pitched 4 scoreless innings. Friedl 3 hits, McLain 3 hits & 3 RBIs.

I was blown away when I looked tonight at TJ Friedl's splits tonight. Bell has been sitting him for a month now vs lefties and TJ is hitting .290 vs lefties. He is hitting .273 vs righties. This has seriously cost us the division in the past month and its infuriating that Bell was extended. We had Senzel shoved down our throats while a .290 hitter sat vs lefties. Indefensible.

No one. They are exactly where they belong. Quite frankly I'm sick and tired of hearing about them and glad they aren't pandering to those jokes anymore. If you can't beat out Newman, Fairchild, Hopkins or Ramos in Mid-August, then you don't belong up here.

Shreve was a good pitcher for the Yankees, Cardinals & Pirates. Should have picked up Jacob Webb off waivers while they had the chance. Let him slide all the way to the 3rd best team in all of baseball with the Orioles. Has not given up a run pitching in high-leverage situations for them in 6 games. Reds and nearly the entire league dropped the ball on that one. Especially the Angels letting him go in the first place who already had solid numbers for them this year and throughout his career.

Angels are already promoting their #1 pick of the 2023 MLB Draft, Nolan Schanuel all the way to MLB today!! 😲

I don't even think Rhett Lowder has pitched so much as one game even for the ACL Reds. Hubbart, Stewart & Collier all saw action in 2022 after being drafted.

Could be by choice, as a pitcher his arm needs time to rest after a full season of college pitching.

Haven't seen that, I thought I read the plan was for him to pitch a handful of games even if just a couple one off relief appearances like Hubbart. Just pointing out that he hasn't yet and it is a different approach than the plan with Bryce Hubbart who pitched a full season plus 5 games for the ACL Reds & Daytona in 2022, Andrew Abbott in 2021 among others. It's not uncommon at all for College Pitchers despite a full season to log a few games at the end of the year after a couple of months off. Seems like none of the Reds College draft picks of 2023 in the Top 5 Lowder, Floyd, Hollan or Schoenwetter have pitched yet unlike other NCAA pitchers the Reds have drafted lately in the same season. Hell, I remember Brandon Finnegan with the Royals pitched in both the College World Series and World Series with KC in 2014. Mike Leake jumped straight from College to the Reds the next season without any MILB play.

Reds offense is rolling again tonight. In the fifth inning don't have a hit yet.

Reds calling up Marte. Cubs also DFA'd Tucker Barnhart.

Yay on Marte, still retains Rookie of the Year eligibility for 2024. Calling up your top prospects does matter, it's like a trade past the deadline that many of these teams won't have the luxury of doing so. Not to mention Hunter Greene tomorrow, Antone & Lodolo back soon. As far as Barnhart, he is past his prime. Even with Stephenson struggling and not knowing if and when he ever rebounds, don't need the 3 catchers on this roster. Casali likely gets DFA'd to once he is off his rehab assignment. Reds must bring back Luke Maile. Has been too valuable as a backup catcher and the rapport he has built up with Andrew Abbott as his personal catcher.

SMH that some Reds fans on some sites were ready to send CES back to AAA. Glad they don't run the team. CES has big, broad shoulders and huge hands. The guy will be a big star for years to come. Put him in the lineup and leave him alone.
Read a lot of stupid bullshit on this very site too. Lacks the foresight to see the big picture that these guys are rookies and going to take some time to adjust. Now if they struggle as long as Senzel has, that's one thing to be worried about. Even guys like Steer have less than 1 entire season at the MLB Level. Can just hear it now if Greene doesn't get a quality start tomorrow in just 1 game back.

A Marte call-up really throws a wrench into the lineup shaking it up but I think it is a good thing at this stage with the offense as stagnant as it has been. Anytime you can reach down and call up your #1 prospect should be reason for excitement. The lineup could go many ways now. Definitely see Votto as the odd man out here and Stephenson less playing time at DH. If it were me, as the roster stands today with the current injuries factored in, I would go with LF Steer, CF Friedl, RF Benson, 3B Marte, SS EDLC, 2B McLain, 1B CES, DH Votto while they are out India & Fraley. If India comes back at all this season which I'm going to assume is a possibility he does not with the timing of the Marte callup, then India should get DH at-bats and not further risk injury playing the field.

As far as Fraley, he would likely go back to RF and Benson to LF. Leaving 1B AB's up to CES, Votto & Steer and all will fight for AB's at DH with India too. Steer and CES deserve to start everyday but we are now at this point where the Reds backed themselves into the corner with so many infielders and will be up to them to figure out how to fairly disperse the playing time among all of them. Simply not enough room for everyone. Stephenson's struggles definitely makes him the odd man out at DH which is not a bad thing given he is not hitting much at all and isn't the best defensive catcher. Sharing his duties with Maile who handles the bat surprisingly well for a backup is a fine approach.

Offense is just totally out of whack. One home run for the only run last night, today the first six batters 5 have struck out.
