I agree, part of being a diehard fan is supporting through the good and the bad. Off to the worst start ever for the Reds. Witnessing history, just not how we like it.. It makes it all the more satisfying when you're team does win like the Bengals this past season.
While I think Bell should have been shown the door before this year.. You would be lucky to find a manager who would be winning much more with this roster. Would the difference be instead of 3 wins, 6 or 7? I don't know. Someone will be the fall guy and scape goat for this. Hard to believe they don't make at least Bell the sacrificial lamb when you really need to be looking into the FO for who to ax.
I almost wish they'd hold onto Bell through 2023. Hear me out. We're not going anywhere even next year. Votto's contract is still on the books until the end 2023. You can buy out Moustakas for $4 million and void the $20 million he is owed in 2024. Start fresh with some cash to spend, our young guys have some seasoning and a couple more ready to debut by then with a new voice in the dugout.

Is he playing shortstop? or are they bouncing him around to every other position but the one he played in College?
I hope Bell is the fall guy, then I hope Nick Krall takes the next fall. I know a lot of this rests on the ownerships and GM's decisions, but Bell has been less than impressive as a Manager. Not sure who replaces him in the interim though, Benevides? Derek Johnson?

Firing Bell now won't change anything about the direction of this franchise and prove nothing but more turmoil and dysfunction. It's too easy to make the manager the pawn in this game when the front office needs to do some soul searching. If MLB does not step in like the owners in the NBA did forcing the league's hand when Colangelo was assigned to clean up the 76ers, then we are doomed. The Castellini's won't have any incentive to change and are content with the state of the franchise. I had hopes that with Bob getting older, he might cede control over and a younger Phil would be hungry...Until he cocked off on Opening Day. Just like his Father. The Reds minority owners should take their ball and go home like Jeter did in Miami when the majority rule has no plan of spending to win.
I'd designate Pat Kelly, Louisville manager, as interim. Been around forever, knows all the players. Just get thru the season then hope new owners can find somebody.
1 thing that the Covid sports break was that I could live without sports. I’m old now and time is precious. If they can’t field a competitive team, then they’re not going to get my time and devotion until they do. And I’ve been following these guys since the Big Red machine 😡
Really shaky but these guys must be freaking out knowing they have to pitch a shutout if the Reds hope to win. But doesn't matter, won't be around after the trade deadline.Mahle 92 pitches, 4 runs through 3 1/3 and that's your Opening Day starter, #2 behind Castillo.
He's better than this but can't count on him to go deep in a game for anything running up his pitch count.
The Reds have been essentially a .500 team the last few years. This year wasn't going to be any different so no reason to get upset over players given their papers. They have better players than 3-20, but when the snowball starts downhill, it is often hard to stop....especially when the manager is one of the worst in the game. Change is often good at the mgr level when things go bad, as a different perspective can create a new outlook. It sucks that the mgr is often the fall guy, but Bell should have been gone long before now.
With this ownership group and how they've run this team into the ground, what manager is going to want this job?
I don't need you to break down the Cincinnati Reds for me as I watch them every night for years and start bringing 'feelings' into this. The Reds had a winning club for 1 year and 2 months.... If you watched them, you'd known that already. For you to suggest that this all David Bell's fault when the problem lies within the front office. For one of the 'worst in the game' he was in consideration for manager of the year last year until key injuries down the stretch which is a concern too often with this training staff. This is not a 1st for them to gut the roster of talent and tell me who you would hire today that would have changed the outcome of this franchise immediately? This is not an attractive job until you get out from under huge contracts with Votto/Moustakas and the new talent gets experience at the MLB level first. Cincinnati fans have every right to be frustrated with this bullshit and laying low, accepting the status quo gives the Castellini's no incentive to change and 12 out 17 losing seasons is a disgrace.

Yep. Bell isn't the problem. He does make some decisions I scratch my head at, but by and large he's dealt this shit hand. Coaches are only ever as good as the players on the field. This shit show is on the front office.
Nick Krall is a ****ing clown and the Reds ownership group gives zero ****s about investing beyond what turns a nice profit for their country club pocket books.

True especially for a guy having to step up as your #1 who is #3 starter on a good team like Mahle so far. I would say it worries me that if his numbers are inflated like Castillo this time last year and doesn't go on a run like Luis did after the 1st 2 months it would hurt his trade stock for the Reds. However, not sold the Reds would get full value anyway after some of the trades this organization has made in their time.
I suspect everyone will be happy when he is made the scapegoat but be careful what they wish for. The grass may not be greener on the other side and it's a good 2 or 3 years off before the Reds could legitimately be a contender with money to spend. I wanted Girardi or a former Red to begin with in 2019 but pulling the plug now won't change our fortunes all of a sudden. It's a collective effort from the FO on down to the position coaches.
Cincinnati can move on from Alan Zinter and get a real hitting coach. Even the analysts at MLB Network, etc were saying after 2020 that if the roster were to stay intact that all the Reds needed to do was change their offensive philosophy. It is what it is and will go as far as the young pitching, India, Stephenson, Farmer and anything Votto has left right now. Anything from guys like Moose, Barrero, Senzel, Naquin & Pham is just gravy. At this point, we may never see the full 2022 Reds as the season grind sets in, other injuries occur and lastly trades hit this organization again.

Yeah Zinter definitely needs to go. Our hitting has been atrocious in his time here. He's earned a pink slip. If we're gonna scapegoat someone let's do it with someone who actually needs to go.

I wanted Girardi too. I think they'll dump Bell soon. I look for them to appoint Pat Kelly as the interim, he knows most of these guys and could babysit them thru the season then go back to AAA next year. Reds overall draft has been so poor in recent years(only Stevenson/India have contributed anything of significance) it's put a drag on the whole organization, best prospects are in low minors and years away from being ready. Really think their amateur scouting unit needs to be rebuilt.

Brian Price was canned for starting that season (2018???) 3-18. So I stand by statement that Bell isn't the problem (or the answer) but yes, I expect he won't be coaching the Reds by the end of May.

That was awesome!! The greatest meltdown he did about everything in one ejection there. MILB managers are the best for these meltdowns. Phillip Wellman puts on a show every now and then but nothing like this. Jose Offerman once got arrested for hitting a pitcher and catcher with a bat in a game. Another one I like is the brawl Lou Pinella & Rob Dibble had inside the Reds locker room on the day Bip Roberts came to Cincinnati. The camera caught his reaction and his expression was priceless!
I dont even know what to say at this point. I'm listening to this Dodgers Giants game and the Dodgers radio guy is spending more time crushing the Reds in the middle of their game than he is calling the action.

Even the Yankees broadcast over the weekend went out of there way to make note of the Reds struggles and Paul O'Neill wasn't even on the call. I keep holding onto this false hope that it all will somehow bring so much negative attention and scrutiny all across the game that will force their hand to change but its just wishful thinking. If you look at this list of minority owners they clearly all don't give a shit either and notice one name still linked to the organization, Lindner Reds Baseball IV LLC.

Rooting for them to lose every game, if you're going to be awful might as well be historically awful. Sad to say for players/coaches, but ownership deserves it

Used to be a college football site that would select each week the "Crummy Game of the Week." Obviously a game that involved two bad teams. If there was such a current day site for baseball surely this Reds-Pirates series would qualify as "Crummy Series of the Week."
