Reds

The only saving grace or silver lining so to speak is that their April Schedule was absolutely brutal. Had to be one of the toughest opening month schedule in MLB, but the May schedule looks a whole lot more favorable. At least until San Fran comes in on the 27th. But at least that’s at home.
Cleveland/Toronto this coming week will be a big challenge.

Yes, injuries and schedule difficulty only go so far with me. Everyone has injuries and is part of the game. It's not exclusive to the Reds and will continue to have injuries as the season goes on. If you want to be the best, have to beat the best. Every team in the NL will play each other home/away and the NL Central teams facing the AL East this year. NYY at Yankee Stadium July 12-14.

Watched the Reds beat the Guardians last night and saw a silver lining. First, with Greene, Lodolo, Overton and Diaz, the Reds have four young pitchers with potential. Could be a solid corps in a year or two if they can keep them together. Second, they scratched out a single run in the 8th, 9th, and 10th via walks, SBs, singles, hitting behind the runner, and if you don't have the everyday talent (and they obviously don't) then that is really solid fundamental baseball. Then despite shaky bullpen, they held on to win 5-4.

I am not crazy, the final record will be bad, probably terrible, but at least I saw a glimpse of what the Reds could be by 2023 or 24.

As soon as the pitchers have value they will get traded!

I would be highly surprised if Castillo and likely Mahle are with this team past July. Still not sold on Overton yet. Could be another Dan Straily just having a good year or could be legit. Not going to fall head over hills after 4 starts but not taking anything away from the guy, hell of a start so far. Just pointing out the obvious with a 28-year old pitcher on his 3rd team in 2 seasons let go by the Blue Jays & Pirates has me needing to see more before heralding him as a future starter long term. Some of these guys like Drury overachieving right now and Overton could bring in a prospect like Straily did after 1 good season for an ace in return with Luis Castillo.

I think Dan Straily stretched his good year with the Reds into a halfway decent year with the Marlins if I'm not mistaken. So if Overton can give them a couple of decent years then it gets them some time to get Abbott ready. He's killing it in the minors.

They shut Lodolo's rehab down for a week. It's gonna be late June before we see him again, if that. Looks Like Minor may be making his debut later next week. They got lucky having two off days this week so they only needed four starters.

The crazy thing with Straily, he was out of the league 3 years later with an ERA above 9.00 after Cincinnati traded him. A one hit wonder and released by previous teams like Connor Overton. Certainly Overton could prove to be different and actually a late bloomer. The Reds FO deserves all the criticism they get but IMO the Straily trade is the best one the Reds have made in the last 30 years. Brandon Phillips is up there too, however the Phillips, Puig/Kemp & Bauer trades all were expendable pieces with their previous teams who were fed up with them. Likely not here otherwise. The Marlins wanted Straily at the deadline in 2016 and Cincinnati wanted Castillo. They refused then but over the winter, Miami still wanted Straily and the Reds didn't budge with their stance demanding Castillo. I'll give them credit where its due here.

It's a gamble, you could capitalize now on Drury/Overton as a rental piece at the deadline demanding a quality prospect like Castillo in return to develop in this rebuild or Connor could indeed be a franchise pitcher for the next 5 + years. If he was 23 or 24, a heralded prospect the decision would be much easier to keep him long term. Hoping for the best and for him to stay productive. I just don't want to see Cincinnati potentially go overboard and give him a 5 year, $30 million deal this offseason and never come close to this level of play again. A team with the budget can take that risk more than Cincinnati who could flip him a prospect with upside in return instead of walking away in free agency or another bad signing. Fortunately there's still some starts to be made to help his case either way.

Hate to see Lodolo missing this much time to develop in his rookie year. Can't wait for his return and hope he builds onto the last 2 quality starts he has. Would much trade Minor with his contract than Overton however the cost of Minor would likely be a salary dump, Connor would probably give the Reds a decent prospect in return. Maybe even a package deal with these guys like Pham, Drury & Naquin not apart of the long term rebuild. Either scenario would be good. Still can't believe they let Miley go for nothing to bring in Mike Minor no where near as productive. Both making $10 million this year, Miley a FA after this year and Minor $13 million next year. Need the logic in this one explained to me.

Best record in the Central division the last 10 games:
Cincinnati Reds.

They're not that bad. They're better than the record by at least five games. Atleast!!

And they had a tough schedule to start the season.

So for the last 10 games .700 winning %

We need our leadoff hitter India to be back and be himself because Friedl is not doing it. If you take India with his stuff last year and insert him into the number one spot you got a way better offensive team.

7 and 3 without Votto and India is crazy. Congrats to the batters, the pitching, and the coaches. When you're three and twenty something pretty damn hard to win 7 out of 10

Good to see Barrero is closer to being back. So 4 guys on Covid restriction, and Joseph Daniel Votto makes his triumphant return in a homecoming of sorts.

Thinking ahead to 2023/2024. How will the infield shape up?
- Is there serious consideration at all to moving Tyler Stephenson to 1B considering his concussion concerns? Or will he stay the Catcher of the future? Will Matthieu Nelson be brought up by 2024 to assume that role? If not, who plays 1st. Votto has maybe 1-2 more years unless he’s channeling his inner Tom Brady.
- India will be 2B for the foreseeable future.
- Is Barrero the SS of the future? Or Mat McClain or Elly De La Cruz? Barrero just strikes me as Billy Hamilton 2.0. Would like to see them move him, maybe push McClain to 3B and bring up De La Cruz for SS. Maybe move Barrero to CF. I really like De La Cruz and hope he’s part of the long range future.

It appears the plan is for both Barrero and Senzel (natural infielders) to be apart of the outfield equation. The serious question this organization needs to ask is how many more chances is Nick Senzel going to have? Injury prone and vertigo has plagued him in the past, saw how that worked with Nick Esasky. He has yet to put together any stretch of consistency other than trips to the IL. It would not be fair to Barrero with his defense to not get ample opportunities to prove himself at SS (only 117 MLB at-bats) but I see the Reds keeping Farmer around long enough for Matt McLain to take the reigns at SS.

Either Barrero/Senzel will take this job and run with it or the experiment should end with the 2 of them. Considering it's Cincinnati, slow to bring up prospects. De La Cruz at 20 will still have 3, maybe 4 seasons since the Reds hardly ever reach down for a young phenom that early. I can definitely see Stephenson at 1B in a few years, not immediately. Cincinnati has both Nelson & Jackson Miller very talented catchers in the pipeline and would only make sense to save Tyler's knees to preserve his bat. Would hate to see an early retirement for him like Buster Posey/Joe Mauer.

Reds need to finally admit Senzel is a bust and dump him, get TS from behind the plate and install him at 1B(DH Votto then trade him to Toronto at trading deadline), and when Barrero gets healthy, he's close, put him at SS and leave him alone and stop all this dicking around with AA/AAA players. If you're going to build for the future by god build for the future.

Tyler Mahle leads the league in most earned runs given up on the season with 33 and has certainly diminished his trade value.

Just put up 20 on the Cubs this afternoon. Farmer broke out his whooping stick. Greene had a so so outing, but the bullpen held fort once they took the lead. Hope the bats can keep it up with San Fran rolling in for the weekend.

Very nice start for Graham Ashcraft tonight vs one of the better teams in MLB with the Giants.

Why did Pham not play but Pederson did?
Just a guess but from the reports I have read, apparently Pham 'slapped' Pederson, not sure if Joc struck back or not. Could be a reason for it. Mark Sheldon also stated later no punches were thrown. Either way, this is a bunch of stupid bullshit over fantasy football dues it seems and Pham appears to be a locker room cancer with the tough guy act he put on vs San Diego challenging them to fights as well. I can see now why he has been expendable during his last 3 organizations and for no better than he has been, wouldn't sadden me to see him go. Soon when Fraley is back and if they still are considering playing Barrero in the outfield, with Almora playing decent, Pham may be the odd man out.

Guy's only hitting about .230. Getting really tired of hearing Sadak's constant pimping of him. Hopefully the Reds dump his ass soon.

12-8 ( leads division) over last 20 games. Two sets of 10 leading the central for "last 3 weeks" now. Read that again: best team in central over last 20 games. Caught up to KC for dead last in MLB. 3-22 to 15-30.

Tied with KC with 15 wins. Next win officially makez KC worst team in MLB as it should be lol.

Lets go Reds and we dont have India yet#! Nice turnaround guys. Proud of ya

3-2 reds. Farmer is hot. Reds are red hot. Longest win streak in the league at 4 games.

2 out of 3 from the Giants is definitely a step in the right direction. India supposedly not far away from returning either

Appreciate your enthusiasm but they still have the worst record in MLB, are getting virtually nothing from Votto/Senzel and have no bullpen to speak of. They'll soon be dumping Castillo/Mahle and although Mahle's coming off a good game he's been a major disappointment, doubt they'll get much for him. Also, look for them to move Pham/Farmer but get little in return. Just please, PLEASE move TS to 1B.

What kind of pissy scheduling gives baseball teams a day off on a summer holiday? MLB is nuts!

Don't look now, but Reds only 4 games out of third place. FWIW, Winker, Suarez and Barnhart are all hitting .220 or less in the AL, does not look like they would have been much help this year.

Well, I think they just moved ahead of KC for the worst record in Baseball. they have had a revolving door lineup all year and that's not likely to change any time soon. Castillo looked like an ace last night, he's getting better each outing. Unfortunately we will probably have to watch him win playoff games for an actual contender in October, while we get some teams washed up outfielder and their number 28 prospect in return for him.
As for 1B, I hope they move TS there as well. Do they even have a viable true 1B in the pipeline to replace Votto eventually? I know they have more than a couple of decent Catchers in the minors.

Reds should look at dumping Votto(he, Senzel, AA are all "hitting" well below .200), I'd like to see them trade Votto to Toronto, let him finish his career at home. As for 1B...maybe convert Rece Hinds? Big guy, decent pop, having a so-so year at High A. Now would be a good time to move him. TS has improved as a C but a move now would prolong his career.

BTW, you're right about Castillo. He looked like a legit big time MLB pitcher last night, he was fun to watch but I'm not sure he finishes June on the Reds roster. A shame.

1st win at Fenway Park against the Red Sox since Game 7 of the 1975 World Series. Have been doing interleague play since 1997, not sure that means too much considering the Reds finally caught Boston on the road in one of their down years. Either way, a win is a win. The horrid start makes for any push into the extended postseason mix almost impossible and just want to carry momentum going into 2023. The Giants series impressed me though.

They have a chance to make up a little ground over these next 9 games. after this brief trip they get the Nationals, who are almost equally as putrid, and the Diamondbacks who also have a losing record. Hopefully they can put a nice run together and take 6 or 7 of those games.
