Maybe but Greene gave up 8 base runners in 3 IP. Rough start.Bell should have let Greene finish the inning at 81 pitches before turning it over to the bullpen this early who did such a marvelous job getting out of the jam. New year, same bonehead decisions.

Well, I mean the bullpen gave up the runs anyways regardless if Hunter would have allowed them or not staying in the game. Going into Greene's 2nd year, I think they owe it to him work his way out of mistakes instead of handling him with kid gloves. Had only given up 1 of the runs at that point before Cruz entered the game when the other runs scored. Getting an early start to taxing the bullpen and know what's coming with Overton & eventually Weaver. Almost every 5th day will be a bullpen game. Worn out by May at this rate and the injuries already to the relief corp. By all means Bell is of no fault continuing to make these same decisions over and over since 2019. Dusty Baker got fired for much less here and I ask you all again, how is this team better since he took over?Maybe but Greene gave up 8 base runners in 3 IP. Rough start.
Reds "hitters" with 15 Ks to a staff that's picked to finish 20 games below .500.
There's hope for Greene, Lodolo & Ashcraft. You never know with Cessa and the 5th spot in the rotation with Overton & Weaver lol. The Reds needed to sign a veteran to eat innings and failed to do so. The outfield situation is going to be a problem for the foreseeable future with the best OF prospects still in A Ball and the Reds with no apparent plan to transition the logjam of shortstops to the outfield anytime soon.Nine walks is bad and I get it but at least there's hope with the rotation. Yet that OF lineup might be the wurst I've ever seen in Cincy.
Today's outfield lineup is not what should be employed on a daily basis. You can do far worse than Fraley who should have been in LF today instead of DH, Benson is versatile in all 3 outfield spots and should be in CF, Myers is a veteran and he'll be fine in RF. Just 1 game.Nine walks is bad and I get it but at least there's hope with the rotation. Yet that OF lineup might be the wurst I've ever seen in Cincy.
I think the rotation will be fine. Hopefully Overton finds some of his magic of 2022 and that will go a long way. Cessa is good and held his own for a few years at the back end of the Yankees rotation. Eventually need Brandon Williamson to be in the equation before too long.Nine walks is bad and I get it but at least there's hope with the rotation. Yet that OF lineup might be the wurst I've ever seen in Cincy.
I wouldn't jump off the ledge just yet though if there's not improvement in 2023, Cincinnati needs a change and get a veteran manager that has been through the fire with a rebuild for all of the prospects on the verge of their debut. Buck Showalter would have been a good one and has succeeded in small markets before. The job Francona is doing with Cleveland having a lower budget is remarkable. People can say Bell can only work with what he has but fire sales are nothing new to any manager the Reds have dealt with since the end of the Big Red Machine.Well, I mean the bullpen gave up the runs anyways regardless if Hunter would have allowed them or not staying in the game. Fraley has potential as a run producer and Myers drove in 94 back in 2016 but the issue is there's nobody there you can really count on. Myers has averaged 52 RBI in 10 seasons. I'm not exactly looking for a George Foster. Perhaps a combination of guys can keep things interesting every game. Like today.Today's outfield lineup is not what should be employed on a daily basis. No doubt the outfield has issues. To be expected after losing 2 NL All-Star starters 2 years ago and an area I wish the FO addressed better than they have done so far. I know Cincinnati did not have much money to spend to have a decent outfield still paying the likes of Votto, Griffey & Moustakas but soon that money will be off the books after 2024. All of these shortstops, might want to consider packaging them and acquire a top OF prospect nearing their debut.Fraley has potential as a run producer and Myers drove in 94 back in 2016 but the issue is there's nobody there you can really count on. I expect them to be good defensively to help out a squad that could struggle to score runs.
Friedl is another guy with potential on a team with only a handful of proven major leaguers. I do recall liking the way he worked pitchers as a pesky AB but if he walks, the Reds need someone to bring him home. Fairchild or Friedl might be the wurst looking 4th OF's in MLB.No doubt the outfield has issues. Fraley has some decent pop and when healthy, I see him as a 20 homer guy in GABP. Had 11 home runs in the final 2 months. Myers won't have to worry about him past the deadline, they'll move him just like Tommy Pham & Tyler Naquin. Benson did not do much today but I'm high on him. Had a great spring and drastically improved last year in the Guardians system before making his debut. Friedl should be a reserve outfielder at best. Starting him won't get the Reds anywhere.
Well said, a pesky hitter is how I'd describe his game too. Friedl has shown some potential and best utilized on a team already with an OF set. During a ST game a week and a half ago, I posted 2 pages back this graphic I saw during the game that TJ from August 16th through end of last season, his slugging pct was .533, 4th highest in the NL, OPS .888 5th in NL with 6 doubles, 8 HR. Kind of surprised me. Certainly won't keep that up over 162 but in a role off the bench he could be useful.Friedl is another guy with potential on a team with only a handful of proven major leaguers. I was hoping to see him at least be able to finish off the inning and would have understood not sending him back out there in the 5th if I were in Bell's position especially with the pitch count pushing 90-100 had he finished the inning. The worst case scenario that could have happened did, left with 1 run and exited the inning charged with 3 runs with the mess Cruz inherited and Fernando couldn't stop it giving up an earned run himself. I'm sure it won't be the last time this happens to Hunter Greene as he develops at the MLB level but hope he gets to work his way through some of these mistakes going forward.Greene, Lodolo and Ashcraft and pray for rain.
Agree guys need to learn to work thru mistakes but 8 base runners in 3 innings is a lot. Bullpen will be spent in about a week at this rate. One down and 99 to go.
The Reds and their staff is predicted to finish 20 games under .500 as well, so I guess the game played out like it should. Two bad teams playing neck and neck to see who can play worse. The Pirates may have won, but it wasn't exactly pretty for them either.Maybe but Greene gave up 8 base runners in 3 IP. Rough start.

It's good that the Reds acquired Newman as a veteran presence in the lineup. He doesn't kill you like Senzel and probably will have to take over SS unless Barrero gets his shit together until the eventual call up of ELDC or McLain. Whenever that may be. Barrero is nearly an automatic out unless hitting against a AAA lineup in ST. India finally being healthy again after playing through injuries all of 2022 may be poised for a bounce back year. It's great for the Reds to keep Stephenson in the lineup at 1B without risking him to injury and the daily grind of catching every game. Lodolo settled down after the 1st, 5 innings 2 runs & 9 K's. Loved the breaking ball he fooled McCutchen on for a strikeout. Keeping in mind this is their 1st starts of the year and for Lodolo working with a new catcher with Casali. Fraley's 3-run pinch hit home run was awesome. The bats jumping all over Rich Hill early. India leadoff home run, Stephenson double and a two-run blast by Newman.
I'll give him credit, he slogged through today but 30+ pitch innings will eventually catch up. BP was great, I'm hoping for a big year out of Fraley.Lodolo with 33 pitch 1st inning...not good.
You'd think a fire would have been lit under Barrero's ass with De La Cruz breathing down his neck and an established veteran who in any 1 month of Newman's career has produced more than what Jose has given Cincinnati since he debuted in 2020. 0-7 to start. Not good. Fraley has been a pleasant surprise from the 1st Seattle trade and said since last summer he is worth keeping around playing at this level. It's good that the Reds acquired Newman as a veteran presence in the lineup. They build this hype up around a guy who has never really had staggering numbers at any level coming up compared to other Reds prospects and now try to sell us on spring training numbers much like they did with Senzel. At this point, I'll have to see it to believe it.Barrero appears to be Billy Hamilton 2.0 at the plate.
I'm just looking at Barrero as a stop gap until we bring CES up. He's our SS of the future. They build this hype up around a guy who has never really had staggering numbers at any level coming up compared to other Reds prospects and now try to sell us on spring training numbers much like they did with Senzel. CES is our future 1B. That's the only reason they're keeping him in AAA right now is to learn the position. Otherwise his offense is ready to go.I'm just looking at Barrero as a stop gap until we bring CES up. He's our SS of the future.
You think so? I thought TySteve was our future at 1BCES is our future 1B. That's the only reason they're keeping him in AAA right now is to learn the position. Otherwise his offense is ready to go.
I think you’re talking about Elly De La Cruz but said CES.You think so? I thought TySteve was our future at 1B
Yeah, he played there primarily all of ST. Once he arrives, Stephenson will split his time at catcher and DH.You think so? I thought TySteve was our future at 1B
You're right.I think you’re talking about Elly De La Cruz but said CES.
At what point do you just say he’s not gonna be a hitter? Took them about 3-4 years with Billy Hamilton, they sacrificed his offense for his defense. You'd think a fire would have been lit under Barrero's ass with De La Cruz breathing down his neck and an established veteran who in any 1 month of Newman's career has produced more than what Jose has given Cincinnati since he debuted in 2020. 0-7 to start. Considering it is the Reds who are still stuck on Nick Senzel after the same amount of time as Hamilton should give you an indication of how long they will be willing to continue throwing Barrero out there. Unfortunately, the top prospect status ship has sailed along time ago on both Barrero & Senzel where you could have received something in return and let some other team deal with them as a bust. At this point, I'm fine with riding out Newman to inflate his numbers in GABP, flip him at the deadline. Move Myers at the deadline and throw Vosler in RF, promote CES to take over at 1B and roll with ELDC. I'll take a .270 singles hitter with Newman and let the rest of the lineup drive him in rather than Jose's automatic out.At what point do you just say he’s not gonna be a hitter? Said preseason I'd give Barrero 6 weeks then replace him if needed. He's only 25, had an encouraging ST...let's just see how things unfold. EDLC should be healthy in 6 weeks, McClain too.Considering it is the Reds who are still stuck on Nick Senzel after the same amount of time as Hamilton should give you an indication of how long they will be willing to continue throwing Barrero out there. I'm not holding my breath on Barrero. Feel he's just as much a lost cause and just being real here. The potential of ELDC, McLain and soon after Arroyo & Marte there's literally nothing he can do to warrant keeping the SS position over a transcendent star like ELDC. Like said above, he's just their stop gap and Jose will get his chance to prove the ST numbers hitting off AAA talent can translate to the big leagues. Even Senzel has been better at the MLB level than Jose if you can fathom that lolSaid preseason I'd give Barrero 6 weeks then replace him if needed. Senzel's a lost cause, 28 already and going nowhere fast. Send him to the Frontier League for a new fungo bat.
