Reds

They have a chance to make up a little ground over these next 9 games. after this brief trip they get the Nationals, who are almost equally as putrid, and the Diamondbacks who also have a losing record. Hopefully they can put a nice run together and take 6 or 7 of those games.
Keyword is little and that is not enough for the horrendous start the Reds got off too. Arizona is a much better team this year (1 game under .500) and in one of the most competitive divisions in the NL West. The Cubs are one of the worst teams in MLB and shouldn't have split the series at home. After the Nats, the schedule gets a lot tougher again. The Cubs, Braves & Pirates for 1 series each are the only teams below .500 currently on the schedule between now and the All-Star Break. Tampa Bay, a trip to Yankee Stadium, the Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals & Mets with the injury riddled roster. People can keep pointing to injuries all they want with this team as if a fully healthy roster is going to change this team's fortunes but it's unlikely this far in the season the entire Reds lineup ever is one the field at once due to more injuries and trades.

Appreciate your enthusiasm but they still have the worst record in MLB, are getting virtually nothing from Votto/Senzel and have no bullpen to speak of. They'll soon be dumping Castillo/Mahle and although Mahle's coming off a good game he's been a major disappointment, doubt they'll get much for him. Also, look for them to move Pham/Farmer but get little in return. Just please, PLEASE move TS to 1B.
I'm not wild eyed optimistic but let's be real, we haven't had our actual starting 9 out there ONCE this season. We ARE better than we've shown. Does it mean we'll end up with some middling win total. Yeah. But we aren't the team that had that historically atrocious start. And the Pirates and Cubs are trash. Who knows, a lot of ball left to play.

Looks like Ashcraft is a keeper so far. Not sure when he will hit the proverbial wall or when opponents will figure him out, but he is dealing like a superstar right now. Definitely a bright spot for the future rotation. Hopefully Lodolo comes back soon and with the addition of Minor, they can give some of the rookies like Greene and Ashcraft a rest by allowing them to skip a start every so often. I feel like Greene is going to be spent by Mid July if he doesn't get to skip an occasional start.

Pitching depth has not been an issue the past few years. My main concern is the offense. There are only 2 players on this current team capable of leading the Reds into the future offensively. Tyler Stephenson & Jonathan India when he returns. Farmer is a nice complementary piece with hitters around him on a winning team but can't be your best player on offense. Matt McLain & Elly De La Cruz are not going to make their MLB debut in the near future and if we have learned anything so far, patience is required for prospects like Jose Barrero and can't miss prospects like Nick Senzel can sorely disappoint you.

Baseball sucks and here is why:

Lowest team salary: the Cleveland Guardians are paying $29 million total payroll for every player they have this year. Thats right 2-9 million TOTAL.

The New York Mets are paying 235 million dollars payroll this year.

Lowest 29 m.
Highest 235 m.

The Reds check in at 105 million. #15 in MLB. 2nd! To St Loius at 137 million in the central. Yes that fukn sucks. The Brewers are paying 5 million (100M) less in first place hahA!!!!!!

I don't think anybody should watch baseball anymore until they decide to make a hard salary cap. And if they don't then I don't think anybody should watch baseball or buy anything that they sell. PERIOD.

Looking up payroll made me sick at my stomach. I wish I hadn't looked. Its SAD. SAD. SAD SAD.

The Phillies fired their manager today because they're paying 169 million dollars for third place in the EAST. LMFAO!!!---!

They want their money's worth damn it. In baseball you just buy a playoff team and pay a luxury tax that doesn't kick in until you get to 230 million.

So when baseball gets tired of the ratings going down and nobody watching the game anymore then they should do exactly what I'm about to tell them.
Set the hard salary cap at 130 million dollars and you must reach that cap.. you can't be over you can't be under. Just like the NFL.
Every team in major league baseball should have a fair chance. This no hard salary cap bullshit is going to kill the game off. OFF. There won't be baseball much in 50 years.

I made a thread on this very thing.

Baseball desperately needs a salary floor.

A salary floor is needed but even more for this small market franchise a competent front office that doesn't mortgage the future of the franchise tied up in bullshit contracts like this organization has given Homer Bailey & Mike Moustakas in the last decade. I'm good with the Votto contract even though the downside of it hurts now. You don't keep MVPs like Votto around without paying them for those who bitch and moan about Joey, can't have it both ways here.

About to drop three straight to the equally pathetic Nationals. When I was watching yesterday, I think it was Barry Larkin said the Nationals started 2019 at 19-31 before going on to win the WS. So it was trying to paint a silver lining, but in order to progress that painting they would have at least needed to win this series.

Can't make up ground losing to teams like Washington 3 of 4 at home who are battling for last in the league with you and split at home against one of the worst Cubs teams in a decade. Some people want to crown the Reds as NL Central champs about to go on a 2nd half run after BTHO Pittsburgh, get lucky once in awhile and beat the Brewers & Giants. Hell, the Pirates swept the Dodgers in LAD and I don't think anyone all of a sudden believes they're World Series favorites.

The Nick Senzel experiment has failed, time to move on. Include him in the upcoming roster purge.

Surprised he didn't hurt himself getting picked off to lose that game. As many injuries as he's had, I cringe anytime he has to exert himself beyond making a routine fly ball catch in the outfield.

I look at it as addition by subtraction with Senzel at this point. Hoping some other deserving player steps up and get some playing time in his absence. Wish we had another super utility player with the hustle of a Ryan Freel. As far as Aquino, he is boom or bust. Almost always bust unless he runs into a home run. Has a great arm but can't field worth a damn. Has all the tools but can't seem to put it together. Another one where time is running out on him. Reminds me of a Wily Mo Pena except Wily was a more productive hitter with Cincinnati.

I think Senzel's played maybe 8-10 games in a row, bound to be worn out at this point. Cal Ripken must breath a sigh of relieve re his consecutive game streak knowing Senzel's in the league.

So when Solano and India return, Something has to give. Does Solano take over third? Do they put Solano at Short and move Farmer to the OF? Is he capable of playing CF?

Solano to 3rd, Barrero to SS, Farmer to utility which is what he's always been(Sunday's infield D vs the Nats was embarrassing), hope they can get India back, start working in TS at 1B. Almora is a good CF, better that what's there now plus he's hitting over .300. Reds FO has put this team in a real bind, not much future their now. Time to start moving up the young guys.

Yeah there's definitely a logjam and confusing. I've been trying to figure out how this would work and then compare it to Reds logic in what actually will take place.

Farmer made a couple of appearances at LF in 2020-21 in defensive replacement situations. I can't see him transitioning there full-time though it can't be ruled out. Teams often stick their worst defender in LF Adam Dunn for years, maybe it isn't far fetched that Kyle does get some action in LF.

It's an odd situation they have right now. Fraley & Barrero will be back before too long. Fraley will be in the equation but is as frustrating as Senzel. Also, Barrero has outfield experience as well on top of being a great fielding SS and deserves a chance to prove himself on a consistent basis at SS. Drury has certainly cooled off and being the HR leader on the team, he'll have a roster spot unless traded. Solano could have made a good trade piece if he was healthy. Pham, Naquin, Drury & Solano aren't building blocks of the future and some of them need to be traded for pieces to help the team going forward. Moustakas fits that too but his contract his untouchable.

Barrero optioned to Louisville after coming off the IL. Unless it's to get consistent ABs and not splitting time with anyone in Cincinnati, I'm not exactly sure what there is for him to prove at Louisville. He can crush AAA pitching but needs development at the MLB level. 117 at-bats is a small sample compared to Senzel.

Years ago Reds had a SS named Leo Cardenas, young guy, really wiry. They decided to bite the bullett, stick him out there and leave him alone. He eventually developed into an All-Star, had a few 20+ HR seasons. Sure wish this edition of the Reds would do the same with Barrero...put him out there and leave him the hell alone!

Totally agreed. Joey has more than earned the money he's making. And he's still producing.

Brought the whoopin sticks out tonight against a team hovering around .500 this time a week ago and Jonathan India started his rehab assignment with Louisville.

Where was that about 5 days ago against the lowly Nationals.
Ashcraft is looking more and more like the real deal. 3-0 (should be 4-0) with a 1.14 ERA. Is anybody in baseball pitching better right now?

Stat of the day

Reds are 16-4 when they out hit their opponents.
If they can get India back and doing something you increase the chances of getting more hits than your opponent. Votto is playing like Votto now.

16 and 4. Thats crazy. The Reds just need some decent pitching from the bullpen then would probably be okay. Turn this around. I believe they can reach 500 for the season by mid August

So who’s going to be the Reds All-Star representative? Can’t say anyone in particular is very deserving, but if I had to pick, I’d say Tyler Stephenson. Maybe Kyle Farmer.
Now if Ashcraft continues to dominate like he has through the month of June into July, then he should get a pitchers invite.

Those are the 2 front runners for sure. I'd give the nod to Stephenson today, especially considering his duties handling a pitching staff. Outside of Contreras in Chicago & Realmuto in Philadelphia not much competition to fill out the All-Star roster at catcher. Tyler is the only one hitting above .300, in fact .280 when I was on there voting today. If Ashcraft has a shot coming up late, I wouldn't rule out Luis Castillo if he goes on a summer run like last year. As always, some guys could pull out or get injured. There's times I thought Drury could be an outside candidate like Felipe Lopez was in 2005.

Watched the Reds blow a 3-1 lead in 9th, gave up FOUR runs on 2 singles . . . plus4 walks, 2 sac bunts one of which turned into a pitcher error, just horrible baseball

Been screaming at anybody who'll listen for the Reds to move TS to 1B. Too late now. God, what a shitty organization.

Santillan is not a closer. 5.00 ERA. 2 blown saves this season. Give the role to Alexis Diaz. Shouldn't be too hard to groom him as a future closer on a team going nowhere though Tony has a difficult time of it for some reason. Can only play the injuries/tough schedule early card for so long, every team has them. Almost 2 months into the season without a fully healthy roster and the looming trade deadline will cherry pick what is left of the roster. You were gifted 4 games at home vs the Cubs, split the series. Pissed 3 of 4 against the Nats almost as bad as Cincinnati and split vs Arizona all at home as well as one of the worst Red sox team in a decade at Fenway.

Bad News Bears Fri night experience. Castillo must be counting the days until he gets away from this amateur organization.

When are the Reds going to get it that you need a closer? This trying any Joe at the of the game doesn’t work!
When will the Reds learn you can't replace 60+ HRs/300 RBIs with .240-.260 singles hitters? I'm just waiting for Phase Two of the Big Roster Dump.

If only the Reds could score innings 1-9 as if it were extra innings, Tyler Mahle would've earned a win for pitching a gem. 3 hits through 9 innings & 12 K's. 4 quality starts in a row for Mahle. Hope this continues and the early season struggles are behind him for his trade value come July 31st.
