Back in the day I loved, and played a LOT of golf. Came close to a major college scholarship. Not only the thrill you mentioned, but I always LOVED the beauty and serenity while out playing on the course. Didn't make a lot of difference if it was a country club or a small public course. But, basically gave up the game when we had kids. Took too much time.

Over the years I've known two guys who played on tour. Interesting stories. Got a distant relative now (cousin's grandson? or something) who is playing on the Canadian tour. Kind of like Class A maybe of the PGA. Haven't checked for some time so don't know how he's doing.

My most memorable though was playing a dogleg Par 5, and true to form launching it dead right over all the trees, losing sight of it. I was searching all over for the ball when my buddy said "is this your ball" sitting on the fringe of the green. My innate flaw damn near had me reaching the green on a par 5 by cutting the corner. that same day, my buddy teed up on a hole that had power lines crossing the fairway not far from the tee boxes. He smacked the ball and hit the power line. Ball dropped straight down. He called Mulligan, teed it up and did the exact same thing.
