It was correlated with red dye in the late 70s early 80s. Yellow dye #5, red dye, and others also have been known carcinogens and linked to physical, mental, and cognitive disorders since the 70s.
So many food additives (like polysorbate 80) have dangerous effects on the health of people consuming them. The reason why they were able to use them is the excuse that what was in each product was negligible short term, but people didn't eat the absolute sht back then that they do in processed foods now. Back then, restaurants also used real ingredients rather than the crap in processed foods.
Today, the average person gets regular daily doses of products they couldn't have in their cupboard/food pantry, and whether they eat at home or at a restaurant. Hardly any restaurant still uses natural products like butter, tallow, or olive oil in their cooking. Instead it's seed oils, margarine, and flavored grill prep (which was never meant to be spread on bread and fed to people, but is simply an oil for facilitating cooking and keep ingredients from sticking to the grill itself).
