I Was surrounded by 3 Turkish men in Frankfurt Germany late one night January 1978, and one had a straight razor and was smiling. I had stepped out of a bar I had been in because I had a little too much to drink and needed some air. I was standing against a wall outside the bar when they surrounded me. One with the straight razor in front and the other two on the sides. Now, we had already had some soldiers attacked in the past and some cut up. I knew I was in deep trouble and my mind was racing as I was looking for a way out. I was thinking about trying to just bull rush pass the one on my left and try to get back in the bar where I had buddies still drinking. Before I did, two men and two women came around the corner from my right headed towards the bar. As they approached, the guy with the razor folded it and hid it so, I decided to try and walk out with those people, and it worked. I got back in the bar and told my friends (other soldiers) and we all went out looking for these Turkish thugs. We saw them running way up the street and decided just to go back in the bar.
Never sobered up so fast in my life as I did that night.

I spent time in Izmir (large city) and time up in the mountains. They were growing opium right next to the base and smoking opium on the streets in some areas of the city. Most Turks were a little smaller than us, but I saw one guy who was the biggest guy I have ever seen. His hands were so big it looked like he could grab your head and squash it like a tomato.
