We've been on that trend since the end of the Cold War(arguably WWII). Notice how countries only get smaller? All new countries are fractures of older, bigger ones. But now what's happening? Russia is expanding. China wants to. The US wants to move key infrastructure into its sphere rather than have them out globally.
