First off, middlesboro ain't "eastern Kentucky". Not even close.
It's eastern Kentucky in the same way Rowan county is. It's located in the eastern part of the state. That's it. It certainly isn't in "the mountains" that everyone understands is deep seky.

Shut up. @bigblueinsanity is correct. I'm also from Middlesboro and still have family there. I visit the area twice yearly. Up until this month or next, my family can continue to claim legal residency in the city.
I've walked from Tennessee into Middlesboro, Kentucky. Knoxville sits just 58 miles distant. The Gap tunnel changed everything in that it's now much easier and safer traveling outside the town. Eastern Kentucky, as in Harlan, Cumberland, Whitesburg, etc., truly are isolated communities compared to Middlesboro.
Middlesboro is 35 miles to Harlan and 55 to Cumberland. Middlesboro is not a whole bigger than Harlan. I would bet 75-80 percent of bell co residents consider it eastern ky
Just to cut this argument short, can someone post a definitive map of Kentucky? I'm from Owensboro and always claim Western Kentucky. If I'm wrong let me know.

Of course they consider it Eastern Kentucky. However, geographically speaking, the community has more in common with Claiborne County, Tennessee and Lee County, Virginia than the rest of KY. Again, many changes occurred since Cumberland Gap Tunnel opened.
My daughter briefly worked there. She's since worked at factories in TN (DTR, England's)

Folks in Middlesboro usually travel to "K-Town" (Knoxville) for shopping and flights.

I probably went 4-5 times. As a kid that was a hell of a treat. Also there was a big flea market I think past middlesboro. Bought my first nudie magazine there.
Back when I was young middlesboro had a big UT fan base. All the stores sold UT and UK gear.

Giles Flea Market. Once upon a time, you could buy firearms there. Last time I visited the flea market, which was 2-3 years ago, some guy sold jeans for $1, as in one dollar. I still have the pair.
We went there 1-2 times a month. It was huge. We would be there 2-3 hours. Of course that was back when your parents could just turn you loose and not see you for hours.

Yeah, they still sold farm animals a few years ago. If you know costume jewelry, you can get some great deals on 14K gold for the melt value at a few booths. Quality changes frequently. Deals are there. Just gotta make friends and work the vendors.
