Dr. Rand Paul Fights Against the Big-Spending Status Quo
According to the latest
Monthly Treasury Statement from the U.S. Treasury (which you can find
HERE), the federal government spent over $3.7 trillion during the first 10 months of Fiscal Year 2019 alone - and is already running a budget deficit over $866 billion! (You can read a news report on this spending, which notes its record level,
HERE.)
Federal spending is simply out of control!
In case you missed it, I called out Congress earlier this month for making such recklessness even worse with its recent so-called "budget" deal, which completely suspended the debt ceiling - allowing for unlimited borrowing - for two years and authorized spending over $300 billion during that time above the limits Congress agreed to in 2011's Budget Control Act.
I especially noted the hypocrisy of Republicans who condemned President Obama's spending but were now lining up at the trough to pile more debt on the American people's backs. (You can find this speech on the Senate floor
HERE.)
Shortly before the Senate voted on that deal, I made sure it went on the record on true fiscal conservatism with a vote on my Cut, Cap, and Balance amendment.
My amendment would have cut spending in keeping with my Penny Plan balanced budget, which would balance the federal budget in fewer than five years by trimming just 2% each year from every on-budget dollar the government spent in FY 2019, with 2% growth afterward.
It would have also instituted new spending caps and authorized raising the debt ceiling
only after Congress sent a balanced budget amendment to the states for ratification.
Although the Senate voted down my amendment on the way to passing its bipartisan spending spree, I will continue to fight back against the big-spending status quo and offer concrete, conservative plans to restore fiscal sanity.
I promised Kentuckians I would stand for change, and I have worked hard to keep that commitment no matter the odds. With so much at stake, it's more critical than ever that those of us who believe in common-sense budgeting speak out!
