It's a pretty simple reasoning on why they're called owners. I hope everyone can follow along on this. These people purchase these businesses. The business just so happens to be a franchise in an athletic competition. When they purchase these franchises, the franchise then belongs to them. Or a very simple term the English language uses for for this is, you own it. You are the (hope everyone is following along) owner of that franchise.

My god does basic English and context not mean anything anymore. It probably won't be long until we change the word cotton. The reasoning is cotton picking was a very popular task slaves had to do. So when someone says the word cotton, it can bring up negative racial thoughts, be it's best we change that word.
