No, I never said anything about why we do our military endeavors.
I was saying that the desire to be a positive force of good in the world is a big reason a lot of people join the military. If you've read anything like "The Heart and the Fist" or "American Sniper" or "No Easy Day" a lot of these guys (yes, I know these are a certain type, but...) talk about how the desire to be almost a "Good Guy" was a big reason they joined the military.
Some join because they need help to pay for schooling; some join because they want some guidance in life; a few join because of the excitement. But I think not understanding that many of our men and women in uniform join because they have a life-defining desire to "do good" is ignorant.
In all seriousness, I highly recommend "The Heart and the First." A really brilliant read by an operator whose insight into why we fight is really powerful. Doesn't hurt that he is a Duke guy, either
