Why do tariffs hurt trade for us but not for other countries? Like Canada for instance. They have a trade surplus with the US yet they tariff the shit out of almost all our products. Many of their tariffs are over 100% and some are over 200%. How come it only works one way?

Well long term it does hurt both, and just makes it so that one or both countries look for different trading partners, which ends up a net negative as you’re eliminating sources of trade. Long term. It’s similar to when democrats want to tax corporations more. What happens? The corporations start doing business in other countries that tax less. You might remember all the bad PR Apple got 5 years ago when it was discovered it was doing all its business from an address in Ireland since Ireland only had like a 2% tax or something and not paying any taxes in the US at all

Crazy thing about traditional government is that they keep a record of literally everything, even their misdeeds. Some of it is SOP, some is CYA, and some of it is just naivety. Point is that they don't need whistleblowers because what they are finding is just right out there in the open.
