Born in Tunisia, became radicalized, left Tunisia to join the Islamic Caliphate, was fighting in Syria, then snuck in through the refugee program. Doesn't seem that far fetched to me, especially when you consider this about Tunisia.

Tunisia is one of the biggest suppliers of jihadist fighters — with about 5,500 of its nationals believed to be involved in combat in Syria, Iraq and Libya, AFP reported.
