Yes they do, before the invasion they stated their goal whether you agree with their reasons or not. It was to “ liberate” the Eastern portion of Ukraine that had separated. They now are in control of those areas.
Russia reiterated that they were going to fight until all of Luhansk and Donbas were in their hands and that’s exactly what they’re doing now.

So why did they go after Kyiv & Kharkiv? Why are they in Zaporizhzhia & Kherson? Why did the parts of Luhansk and Donbas the separatists didn't control need to be liberated?
