I’m in my early 50’s. The 80’s we’re about as good as it gets. Between me and my second wife we have 8 kids ranging from 16 to 25. I fear for them. I fear for the path their generation is leading down, and I fear us with a few more years left are going to have to live that hell.

If he had clips in and was not accustomed to clips, falling is not unusual. Same with cages. I remember the first time I used clips after having cages for years. I came to a stop light and decided I was going to try to balance in my stop, rather than put my foot on the ground. It did not last long. I started to tip and fall and forgot I was not using the cage. I just went to the ground, looked up and saw a dude watching me from his car and I just started laughing. Must have been a funny sight.

That is what complete situational unawareness looks like. That guy should have moving and looking around in order to observe the people in his immediate vicinity. At the worst he could have run away, or into the store, or jumped into his car.
Another spot to be aware of is when you are loading groceries into your car or SUV. It is one of the few times your eyes are off of your surroundings.
And keep your damned doors locked.
When you are exiting the store, scan the area for possible dangers. If anything looks suspicious, go back inside.
Best to not let someone get close in the first place, but if you, your wife, etc is in an area where you can't carry a defensive weapon, carry a tootsie roll pop. The candy lodged in the palm of your hand and the stick protruding between your fingers is a good jabbing weapon if the bad guy gets to close. A jab to the throat or eye should give you time to escape.
