Im all for making things more efficient, and i even actively try not to waste (lots of discussions in my house about that). But downward directed fiats by hypocrites is not the solution.
I would prefer free market choices. For example, if MOST consumers had the choice between 2 identical cars and one happened to get better gas mileage (i know, then they wouldnt be identical), they would choice the better mpg, because it will save gas money. Nothing wrong with that scenario. Manufacturers know this, so they are incentivized to come out w better cars.
Also, if the world were run out of fossil fuels tomorrow, these companies will find a way to continue to produce and sell their product. In other words, they are incentivized to find a more efficient vehicle ... absent govt mandates.
