I love Social Security, surprised all my welfare hating, tax hating, friends here think it is so super. Really what people hate is welfare that goes to someone besides them. They love welfare that benefits themselves, but get real stingy when the gov tries to help others.

are you really comparing welfare to Social Security?
It is welfare. I have no idea how you could consider it anything else. Current taxpayers pay for current beneficiaries to receive a pension.

I did not have a choice in the matter. For over 40 years it was taken out of my paycheck or I had to pay directly. I would have much rather been allowed to take the same amount of money and invest it. But my government would not allow that. So I invested on my own and now that I am retired I use my investment money to live on.
If Social Security was welfare, I would not be eligible to receive it.
Social security is a ponzi scheme...take a look if you took the same money and invested it yourself the returns then try to explain how SS is not theft
social security had a surplus. Bill Clinton started the process of borrowing against that to create his fake budget surpluses. Which opened up a can of nasty worms of govt criminals using Social Security as another credit card for their purposes.
We, the working folk, pay into a system. That is not welfare. That is specific govt withholdings intended to be their for me when I retire at appropriate age.

Most smart people wanted Social security abolished decades ago.
Not welfare but not used right either. It was originally a Ponzi scheme. It benefited initially people who had never paid in.
But average life expectancy when it was started was 62. Benefits at 65 meant the gov would never have to pay anything above what was taken in. So they took the money and spent it on other programs and never stopped. So it will ultimately be insolvent as the unintended consequences of people living longer were not anticipated by the crooked schemers. The corruption continues to this day throughout government.

If By the time you're 67 yr old and 600,000 is paid into social security. That would be 1.9 million if you had gotten a 5% return. Your annual interest would be 95k.
The government promises you 3,075 a month at 67. Which is 37k a yr.
