Mertz looks like it’s about to be official

I hope he has eligibility.

Ughhhhhhh. [sick]
Why? Good Lord.
Exactly my feeling, he is mid, there are better options, atleast make them say no to you, I saw Leary being linked to Mizzou, Kentucky can atleast try against that
He wasn’t very good at Wisconsin. He has some traits and looks the part but it’s never a good sign when the team he’s leaving doesn’t care and the fans of team he’s played think it’s hilarious. We’ll see i guess.
I know we have some fans who will never be satisfied with anything Stoops does, but this initial reaction is difficult to understand. Here is a widely recruited 4 star QB with Power 5 experience and a strong, accurate throwing arm. He has a higher ceiling than he showed at WI, but better coaching will almost certainly help. Assuming that our new, unnamed OC (probably Coen, who also found and chose Levis) has approved this choice, I don't see the problem here. And there is no law keeping Stoops from taking a second QB.

His numbers look terrible and those that have seen him some weren’t impressed. Wisconsin’s passing offense was ranked 112th. We don’t have to be excited and give blind faith to an OC that isn’t even officially hired. Maybe he’ll turn a corner and be great here. We’re all rooting for that, but don’t have to love the move on paper right now.

Yep . I was told on 12/2 that Coen would be the new OC and that he “wants the Mertz kid from Wisconsin. “ When I said “he isn’t even in the portal “ he said “he will be , and we’re getting a lineman from Alabama and a running back from Vandy “. A couple of days later Mertz and Davis entered the portal. So far this guy has been spot on .

Pretty incredible really when you consider how tight they had the lid on this thing

His stats with Will Leaveus for the bowl game are identical almost.

Will leaveUS
19 touchdowns 10 interceptions

This guy Wisconsin cheese eater is. 19 touchdowns 10 interceptions

IF Coen is the OC and IF Coen did want Mertz, the first question I hope he is asked about is 'why Mertz?' Hopefully it is a lot more than just experience and a big arm. I would rather have little if any experience but great decision maker, decent arm, that has mobility. Would feel a lot better if it was more than the arm and experience.

I'd Jeff Burrow too.

Stoops has been good and I am happy he is here and are satisfied with what he has done for the most part minus conservative play calling, and scangerallo. But mertz is not it and a lot of people have said so

How do you tell if a QB is a great decision maker if he has little to no experience?

Legit question.
Coming out of high school, no way. Watching games in college the ones with good pocket presence, knowing how to buy time. The ones that don't throw into double coverage. The ones where you see wide open WR's but they don't. The ones that can change plays late when they see 8 or 9 in the box on a called running play. Some of the best I have seen at that this season are people like Young, Bennett, Maye, Hartman, Hooker, Travis to name a few off the top of my head. Those types are the best at it then you have a whole bunch that is not quite as good at that but can throw it and run it equally well and makes good decisions a lot of the time.

Who will never be satisfied? He just wasn’t good at Wisconsin. I said he had some traits and we will see.

Coen was an unknown and has been terrible for the rams. Of course he succeeded last year, he didn’t have much choice we were terrible the year before and even he force fed the ball to two players. Coen wasn’t that creative and I’d argue he’s not our best option at OC. As to your other points some are valid but it’s also valid that Levis still struggles with accuracy, still can’t read a defense and still makes bad decisions and yet…. He’s a top NFL prospect which tells me you don’t have to be an athletic freak to be a good QB or a good QB to be drafted. It’s a lot on potential and Mertz has potential to be a very good college QB. Not every kid is going to be a super star and yet they can still be very good
HCs of other SEC schools disagreed about Coen.

I think it’s easy to see what Coen likes about Mertz. But man, he’s walking way out on a limb making this guy option 1. We have every reason to trust the guy.

I saw it earlier, so I went watched highlights, he does have good arm strength, but nothing pops off at you, it seems like he makes bad decisions a lot, I guess we will see if he actually come here
l like his quick feet and ability to move in the pocket. That is higher on my list that arm strength all day in todays game. You have to be able to avoid a rush and make back yard plays on occasion, cant just park in the pocket.

If it means what I think you are saying, other SEC schools and coaches thought Gran was a great OC too. As a society we have to stop thinking we are calling someone trash because we critique them. Plus, as a fanbase we have to stop acting like those who are successful for us are the best and only options out there

Anonymous coaching comments in the SEC praised Coen for being difficult to defend.

What? His numbers look terrible? His QBR was not terrible. Fairly close to levis with 2 years left.

it was compared to what we had ran. Anonymous coaches also praised Gran. You’re still missing the point. I at no point said Coen was bad, I said it is my belief he isn’t the best out there and isn’t as creative as we make him and I stand by that. I don’t need anonymous coaches to tell me that. I watched a year that out of 10 plays - Crod ran 6 times, wan Dale caught 3 and we ran a bubble screen to the other side. Wash, rinse, repeat and perhaps The tight ends caught a couple passes a game. Regardless, as I said, I am not against Coen- just my opinion and yes I would definitely want him over going back to the ground and pounds. Remember critiquing someone is how they get better, it’s not attacking them

He committed to Wisconsin after six varsity starts, then his recruitment blew up.

But he stuck with Wisconsin and it didn't work out.

Highlights look great (don't they all). Basically he didn't live up to the hype (highest ranked QB Wisconsin ever had) and was run off by the fans and coaching changes.

Rehab job in progress.
Kind of like Spencer Rattler? Who knows

Mark stoops career record is 66-58. Pretty mediocre really.
I will make this really simple for you. In 2013, Mark Stoops inherited Joker Phillips' roster that had produced a 2-10 season for Phillips in 2012. Since our 2016 season, using Wildcat players he recruited himself, Stoops is 54-34 including 4-2 in postseason bowls. Stoops is the senior football coach in the SEC East and has won more football games than any other coach in UK history. He has already produced 7 All Americans including a national defensive player of the year. He broke decades-long UK losing streaks to TN and FL. UK currently holds the longest winning streak in the country against OOC teams. If you consider that mediocre, then I have to ask whether you know anything about coaching a college football team because your comments make it sound like you don't.

For some reason, I just have a bad feeling he ends up with the dirty birds and kills it there under Brohm.
He can go to school wherever he wants. That will not close the gap. Our fans need to stop worrying about UL, whom we beat every year, and strictly think SEC.

Meanwhile, there is another former 4 star QB in the portal from NC State we could be going after. He has been injured this season, but listen to the numbers he put last year as a sophomore:

Completion % - 65.7

Passing Yards - 3,433

Touchdowns - 35

Interceptions - 5

Now that is what a damn QB looks like! These are incredible numbers. Why aren't we going after Devin Leary instead? This is a guy who can be a difference maker, someone even better than Levis. Those are the numbers of a guy who is accurate, makes good decisions, and doesn't turn the football over.
I agree with you.
If Leary is healthy and interested, he looks pretty damn legit. Killer Stats, with low INTC rate.

Look, coaches and schemes matter with how a QB looks and plays. Example Hendon Hooker. Hooker was not elite at VA Tech by a standards. At UT he was a Heisman candidate.

Fact is that decision making can be influenced by schemes, some schemes are too complex for kids.
