Mertz looks like it’s about to be official

I have no clue about QB ratings I just watch the games. You can do the same via YouTube. You watch and be the judge. Wisconsin's offense this year was terrible and they lost 6 games this year and much of the reason for that and the offense and fell on Mertz's shoulders. You need to take off your rose colored glasses.
No disrespect, and you are a good poster over here, but you said Mertz regressed. His QB rating says opposite. They have a QB rating for a reason... and I don't wear glasses.

We learned this year that a highly rated QB may not be a good decision maker. Watch the replays how many times open receivers were not seen and throwing into double coverage or tightly covered. Just a crucial part of being a really good QB that you have or you don't. Pocket presence yet another key to thriving in the SEC. Does he have those two things? Anxious to see Wade now. But he has no experience so you know what that means in this conference.

Would Kentucky take two portal QBs and let them battle it out? Nebraska did this last winter
Can't imagine 2 quality portal qbs come here at the same time. Don't know about the Nebraska dudes, but portal guys this choice is their last chance. Who gambles going to a place who got someone else!?!?

Plus that kills 2024 qb recruiting, & sends Sheron & Wade to the portal themselves. Oh and Wade also brings with him his talented DE brother who played a bunch this season.

And what if coen isn’t the guy, we don’t if coen is the guy yet, and coen was good but you have to place some credibility in wandale robinson
It is 100% Coen. In fact it is 200% Coen and its been in the works for awhile ( post Vandy).

Also yeah Wandale was great, but Coen doesn't get credit for dialing up plays to get him the ball? Also Coen made the massive jump in UK's total offense rankings with basically ONE legitimate receiver.

Well if we have hired an OC and this is his pick “his guy” then we have to trust it. Not what I thought would happen but doesnt mean it won’t workout. We have lots of holes to fill. If we can’t fill some of those then any QB is going to have a hard time overcoming them.
Needs besides QB:
RB- give me the Vandy RB and a stud recruit
OL- Left tackle and a road grading guard
Edge- we need someone who can put some pressure on a QB.

We get 2 of those 3 holes filled in the portal I will be happy.

It probably is coen, but you have to acknowledge how much of Kentuckys offense that year was robinson.coen being back will be good, and if it’s mertz is the QB he will have weapons, the question will be is mertz good enough to consistently get them the ball

I am not sure what is so damn hard to understand....Stoops has been working behind the scenes to get Coen back....Coen wants Mertz.

is that not good enough for a guy who took our offense from ranked #96 in 2020 to #31 in one season with a QB from Penn State that ran the Wildcat on the goal line pretty much 95% of his playing time?
You make good points.

I'm just giving you a word of caution though: Will Levis and Graham Mertz are on different levels as far as talent/ability.

And also remember that Fickell is letting Mertz go without resistance despite the fact right now UW has no replacement for Mertz and they themselves will probably need to go to the portalfor a QB.

Yes I agree. Better arm strength than I thought, decent touch and fairly mobile. I like the fact that he has 2 years left. Let's give the guy a chance.

If coen wants him, I don't see reason to be overly concerned. Yes I would much rather not take on another project, but it seems to be the route coen likes to take.

I'm betting every coach in the country has a lost of Portal QBs they are monitoring

I think rucker is making some really good points. I have no idea if Mertz is going to be what we need or not. It does concern me that our MO is becoming QB Transfer U. If I'm a sought-after HS QB, why would I ever come to UK? All we ever do is search the portal every year for a starting QB, at least the past few years. Does Wade stick around if it appears Mertz is gonna be the guy for the next 2 years? Doubtful. I always thought the portal would be a stopgap for one year. Now, it appears that the portal will be used for building roster for multiple years. Don't know how that affects HS recruiting but I can't imagine it's a good thing. Although, to be fair, a lot of schools are doing the exact same thing. Now, more than ever, recruiting class rankings are becoming irrelevant. Some schools may lose 50% of their highly rated recruiting class before they even make an impact on the field.

Jim Harbaugh relied totally on transfer QBs his first few years at Michigan (Jake Ruddock from Iowa, then O'Korn then Shea Patterson) and it did scare top high school kids away or they left campus each year Harbaugh brought in the next transfer QB. He finally knew he had to get out of the QB transfer game and develop his own and he has now done so with McNamara and McCarthy.

Agreed. When we approach Michigan’s level of success we should concentrate on developing QBs in-house.

Didn't Fickell just hire one of the OC's I thought would be good Phil Longo?

I'm more worried about the OC than the QB. A good OC running the right system can make an average QB look very good. I just don't know if Coen is the right guy. He only had 1 year here and had 2 all time greats on offense (Wandale and CRod). Also a good OL and QB to go with them.

I still believe he will have 1 foot out the door the minute he gets here. He will have some big challenges with a new QB, primary RB, and a disappointing OL to deal with.

I'm also not a fan of our check with me pro style offense that milks the clock, runs up the middle, and throws short of the sticks. Maybe if we played it more uptempo and threw less screen passes I could get behind it more. The good news is we are already almost rock bottom and there's pretty much no where to go but up.

I’m not sure I’m buying the argument that if Coen is the OC this is who he must want. Maybe he does, but he’s currently employed by an NFL team. How much time has he really had to scout the QBs in the portal? I’m guessing he didn’t watch much college football this year. Maybe he’s seen a few clips and likes him, but I can’t imagine he’s got an in-depth knowledge of the QBs in the transfer portal.

Fickell's offense is not suited for a pro style QB. He prefers a spread heavy with a running capable QB.

Sorry but I honestly don't believe Levis is that much more talented than Mertz.

I’m getting flamed over there. Because it was the systems fault, the offensive play callings fault, he had no weapons. Every excuse known to man.
Since you are a fan of Tennessee I don’t really thin your opinion really matters but yet you seem to get you kicks and giggles out of posting on a rival board and paying for premium what a dumbass.

However all you talent evaluators. I think I will take the word of Coen over anything you guys THINK or say. Keep on being you

Apparently I've not seen enough of Levis and you've not seen enough of Mertz :)

How did Levis look at Penn State?
-apples/oranges.

-there was very limited film on Levis at Penn st as he was the "change of pace" backup...there is an abundance of film on Mertz at Wisconsin as he was the starter for a couple of years.

-if Mertz is indeed coming to UK/is our starting qb I'll pull for him like crazy...but his stats are dodgy against lesser competition than UK faces. These are facts.

^would be overjoyed to have to eat crow.

This. It's all part of the events we were told would happen. Imo it's a very good sign
Yep . I was told on 12/2 that Coen would be the new OC and that he “wants the Mertz kid from Wisconsin. “ When I said “he isn’t even in the portal “ he said “he will be , and we’re getting a lineman from Alabama and a running back from Vandy “. A couple of days later Mertz and Davis entered the portal. So far this guy has been spot on .

He wasn’t very good at Wisconsin. He has some traits and looks the part but it’s never a good sign when the team he’s leaving doesn’t care and the fans of team he’s played think it’s hilarious. We’ll see i guess.
Maybe Joe Montana is available

When UK media selectively retweeted that QB and RB’s announcements, and not all the others, it felt like something was up ha

I hope he has eligibility.
