If cal were to leave next year and then all the recruits were to follow him and we ended up getting sanctions for something a player did that cal knew nothing about, i seriously doubt many people would want to honor him a few years later. Yep - UK fans would bitch if Cal left tomorrow, but we'd hire Sean Miller or Archie or someone and move on to be successful and most fans would be okay with it eventually.

It's absurd to compare the Cal situation to a guy like Pitino who left UK when he was absolutely at the top of the college game, shat the bed in the pros, and then returned to the college game as the coach of our bitterest foe.

It's also absurd to compare UK to Memphis in any way. Memphis' biggest problem is their status post conference re-alignment, not their status post-Cal, or post-NCAA infractions. It also doesn't help that Memphis under Pastner has been an immense disaster, and yet they haven't had the cojones, or money most likely, to replace him.

Memphis had every right not to invite Cal to be honored. That may well have been the best approach.

BUT -- once they did invite him, to back out of it because of pressure and then to issue a fatuous letter that sounds like it was written by a 14 -year-old girl who got dumped makes them seem decidedly second rate, and like a bunch of losers.

I don't disagree with this one bit but isn't this the same way many people talk about Pitino? I know he is coaching at Louisville now and most UK fans hate Louisville but Pitino left for a pro gig and did a lot of great things while at UK. Just seems pretty hypocritical.

I have a couple replies to this...
#1 whether some UK fans hate Pitino or would not want to honor is irrelevant. What's right is right.
#2 Rick Pitino came back to college to coach UK's biggest rival, an in-state rival that UK is required to play yearly, home and home. UK is not a rival of Memphis. The only time they play each other would be in some early season tourney or in the NCAA-T. There is a huge difference.
#3 If UK wanted to honor Pitino for making the Hall of Fame, I wouldn't want to honor him, but I would go along because of what Rick did for UK and how significant the Hall of Fame is. Anyone who doesn't see that is just being petty and ridiculous.
#4 Even IF Kentucky fans didn't want Rick honored, IF it were announced that UK would honor him, there is NO WAY the school would ever publicly go back on its word. Once it was announced, UK fans would go with it and the school would do it well. Guaranteed.

For these situations to be similar, Kentucky would need to be in Tennessee and be Memphis's biggest rival, AND Cal would have had to go pro first, then come back to do it. Please, see the difference.

Cal is going to have some fun with Memphis in the future. He does not like to be slighted and he's not just some nicely nice guy that forgives. It's not his nature, and memphis knows this. They are scared. Most of their fans want this dropped quickly, and the reason is it scares them too.

I had a few friends of mine that coach basketball at Melrose tell me the memphis administration is scared to death of the whole situation. They know cal very well, and they know he won't like this. They also told me the President isn't aware of exactly who he's probably pissed off. He's an academic that folded to some stupid fan pressure. He doesn't realize the repercussions that could follow this action. They also fear they will never get an opportunity to re-live the great calipari decade again. For the Cal supporters in memphis, this bothers them greatly. For memphis basketball in general, it's their only modern success, at all. That's why you DON'T do this. You are now Tulane to people basically. No one will see Cal/Memphis in the same way anymore. They are nobodies.

correct, except Pitino didn't leave UK for Louisville, he left for Boston, a whole notha motha. The situations couldn't be more different and the only people who cant figure this out are agenda driven or just, well, dumb. They aren't thinking about it correctly at least.
