How about we bring Tubby back and sign Bobby Perry, Sheray Thomas, and Lukasz Obrzut?
Consider an important wrinkle:

Tubby signed Bobby Perry, Sheray, and Lukasz in the days before one and done really took off and the bleeding toward the NBA, NBA development league, and overseas really started.

If Tubby were here today, no way he’d be bringing in recruits as good as those three.

Not all number one recruiting classes are the same. See 2013. Yes, we have two high level recruits coming in that will probably be ballers from day one. But after losing as much as we lost off this last team, we need more than two difference makers to come in. The rest of the class looks good but most experts describe these guys as "raw." That won't cut it next year. We need a third stud from somewhere if we're gonna be serious title contenders next year like a Kuminga or Banchero.

I surely get your point, and agree, but our number one class wasn't chosen as number one because of only two guys.

The "raw" guys must have impressed several people also.

With that said, I like your thinking about bringing in another "stud."

He’s not even trying. What could be worse than a troll wasting the miserable moments of his life on the Kentucky basketball site, then bringing so little wit or intelligence to it that the only reaction to his posts is contempt?
I’m not sure but I think HE is a SHE.

Well, that’s right about what we are going after right now. If you and anyone else can’t see that there’s a problem then you need to open your eyes. Or more likely y’all see it but just don’t want to believe it.
Are you for real?! Has Cal ever recruited guys with the limited skill sets of Perry, Thomas and/or Obrzut?! That’s just a crazy post and incorrect. Yes, I watched every season that Tubby was here.

Unless “HE” has magically grown boobs, which wouldn’t surprise me this day and time. “SHE” supposedly has a very nice rack. Just ask “HER”, “SHE” will tell you. I should note, I didn’t ask, “SHE” offered that info in the dogs and epilepsy thread I created a few months back. [laughing]

Look, all the HS guys are ranked in the top 45 so they are very good players. But, that does not mean they will be very good college players next year. For instance, Askew probably won't be ready next year frome everything we've read but should be a stud by his second year. However, that won't help us much next year. Same with Fletcher, if he sticks around. Jackson is raw offensively and will need development. Same with Ware. Eventually, these guys will be very good but we've been told to temper our expectations for next year with most of them.

I love this response. I think all three of those guys played to best of their ability. But those Bobby Perry, Sheray Thomas years were painful.
I’m glad you said that. I meant ZERO disrespect to those guys as they did indeed give their all, they were just simply not talented enough to play at Kentucky.

Some people are just so entitled with Kentucky basketball. They feel for some reason that they’re owed a national title every season, and when they don’t get it they cry and blame a coach that continues to give us a chance to win. Drives me crazier than it should lol

I don't see how anyone can truly argue against that

Who was better, Perry or EJ? I’d take Perry. Idc what they were ranked in high school. Atleast Perry could step out and hit a jumper. Whitney showed absolutely no skill in any department except being able to run and jump.

Sophomore Perry or sophomore EJ? Definitely sophomore EJ, hands down. Whitney didn’t even play half a season here. Not really a fair argument.

He could have played a full season and it wouldn’t matter. He was getting worse and worse. He was HORRIBLE.

Perry vs EJ Sophomore Stats.
• EJ: 24mpg, 6ppg, 5rpg
• BP: 11mpg, 3ppg, 2rpg

So basically if Perry gets the same minutes as EJ he puts up just slightly better numbers. Add in the fact that Perry took a pretty good jump his junior year and stayed all 4 years, yeah id take Perry over EJ in a heartbeat.

The simple fact that it’s even debatable is pretty sorry on EJ’s part. He was a top 10 recruit. Perry was around top 80-120 if I remember right. It’s a complete joke that the two had similar sophomore years, one comes back for two more years and the other couldn’t be bothered to “waste” another year at Kentucky and turns “pro.” He will be pro in something other than sports by age 30. I imagine even euro leagues won’t even want EJ by then.

Perry was ranked 115 and looked kind of like an alien coming out of high school. But he sure have UK all he had.

Okay seeing that, you have a solid point. Still, as a whole, Cal’s recruits dwarf Tubby’s recruits. It’s not even close.

If Whitney wouldn't even stick around doesn't that make Perry the better recruit?

And I'm sorry, I wouldn't take EJ over Bobby P. At least BP played hard all the time. EJ was just a ball of potential, looks good getting off the bus.

Bobby Perry was decent at Kentucky. The problem was he ended up being the best out of that class and the only one who did anything at UK. If Perry was the 3rd best recruit out of one of those Tubby classes we would have had way better teams.

Ralph how did jj blow his opportunity to become a head coach?

Cal used to attend UNC Wilmington. He has a lot of connections still there and helped Justus get that interview. Take into account Justus is from North Carolina and has a lot of contacts in his home state. This was an interview equivalent of being on a pick and roll and wide open lane/hoop and finishing like Ashton Hagans. (not the HS version who somehow threw down on EJ Montgomery who as we've seen would've been better off just moving out of the way for Hagans to miss)

Most big time coaches in college athletics prefer to help land a guy a job instead of cutting them loose when they are ready to make changes. A few other things can't be mentioned publicly but let's just say his public ass kissing did get a laugh from some of Cal's friends (who aren't on staff or connected with UK) in the industry.

This makes me sad on a number of levels. I think JJ has solid character, but I also understand why he's still an assistant. You have to be super intense, or super sales-y to the be the head coach, and Joel is neither. I'm not an AD by any means, and my opinion means nothing, but I kind of get it.
