Kentucky Baseball 2022

I feel like replacing Guilliams with another volunteer assistant will be extremely difficult

I think TG knew he should get off the sinking ship and he did. Seemed obvious he was looking for an out. Many players liked him more than anyone else. So this could be a deciding factor on others leaving.

I'll also say that many players are making decisions they think are best for them. They may not leave simply because there is playing time. So there is more that goes into it than merely disliking coaches and how they run a program.
I think everyone knows Mingione is done after next year. I think even Mitch does too.

Bravo to Todd for giving Mingione a taste of his own medicine.

This is exactly what he does to his players.

For sure…. People with excellent knowledge of how to teach hitting are generally paid for it. Volunteers are normally first base coaches and camp runners as well as organizers…. TG was a gift and their is No One on this current staff that can take over the hitting coach… they are f’d

Something tells me next year will be epically bad. Why would a kid transfer to KY except to say they played for an SEC school.

Usually these guys are paid with education I think.

So I was about to suggest Eddie Brooks might want to take that job since he never graduated

but oh thats right, Mingione already gave him a free education so that won't work.

I know this because of the dramatic Mingione promo video on BBN tonight that aired for the first time around the day that Kentucky was eliminated.

It was complete with a dramatic soundtrack and Eddie Brooks testimony of how great of a guy and leader Mingione is.

So hmm that won't work. So much for Brooksie. If only Mingione could help himself from self promotion that would've been a great fall back in a pinch.

If I had to bet though, Mingione would trade a promo video of Brooksie telling
BBN how great of a guy he is over a hitting coach any day of the week.

After all the only battle that seems to matter here is the battle of perception amongst the
casual BBN alumni and fanbase. If it was based on actual , gee I dont know, baseball ? he wouldnt have a job here any longer.

I would like to have a little hope that maybe Guilliams left because Mingione has been told he will not be back as head coach next season and Barnhartt is just getting all his ducks in a row......A guy could dream right??

I first heard that Gulliams kind of had an attitude change during/after the SEC tournament. Like he just seemed kind of less chipper and he said some things that made it sound like this sort of change might be in the works.

It was this that made me think and have hope that the staff had been told that they wouldn't be retained and that Guilliams was sad that he'd be leaving. Instead, it seems that he was likely just coming to grips with reality of the season ending and knowing that it was best for him to get out.

As I mentioned, Guilliams was well liked by the players. He was one that they could regularly trust and turn to. So, I don't think it will be taken very well that he is leaving. I think this will be the straw that broke the camels back for some of our players.

Those are usually the grad assistants. The volunteer assistant is typically paid through camps during the summer.

I always thought it was weird that UK's hitting coach was a volunteer assistant rather than a paid one. So, we will see how he is replaced. I think it will be very difficult given the position itself and the fact that Mingione's job is a dead man walking.

It was represented that Guilliams was heavily involved in the day to day operations of the team. Doesn’t sound like a volunteer position. With everything I’ve read/heard I’m really shocked that John Cohen recommended Mingione for the position. If I was Mitch I wouldn’t listen to Cohen ever again.

I am not sure how other teams break down their duties. It is very typical that you have a pitching coach that is either the head coach or a paid assistant. After that it is a bit more of a mixed bag.

At Arkansas, for example, you have a pitching coach and then the other assistant, Nate Thompson, is the recruiting coordinator but also seems to coach hitters. Then Bobby Werners is an assistant that is, 'helping with catchers, infielders, and hitting.'

LSU has a guy who is just labeled as a hitting coach. Not sure if he is paid or what.

For UK Guilliams was the hitting coach. So, yes, he was basically our offensive coordinator. He was very heavily involved in the day to day. He was an assistant coach, he just didn’t get paid for the coaching part. He got paid by working camps and such. He worked with batters on approaches and he prepared scouting reports of pitchers.

I am not sure, because the responsibilities of baseball coaches are very far reaching, how other teams break it down, but I feel like UK having a hitting coach that is a volunteer assistant is fairly unusual. Which is why I think replacing him could be difficult.

I remember with Gary Henderson’s staff, Hendo was the head coach/pitching coach. Brian Green was the hitting coach for a little bit. I can’t remember who replaced him after he went to New Mexico State. Keith Vorhoff, who I actually got into a heated argument with on Twitter, was the volunteer assistant and first base coach then moved to third base. Brad Bohannon was a paid assistant. Feel like I’m missing a lot of names here.

Green was here from 2009 to 2014 and Bohannon was at UK from 2004 to 2015. Henderson was pitching coach from 2003 to 2008 and then head coach from 2009 to 2016.

Green coached hitters and Bohannon I believe did fielding and recruiting.

Rick Eckstein was there from 2015 to 2016 and coached hitters after Green left. Then I believe that Toby Bicknell took over as recruiting coordinator in 2016 from Bohannon. Eckstein is now with the Washington Nationals organization and Bicknell is an assistant for Charlotte.

I think that is how it went anyway.

Bicknell was the one I couldn’t remember. He came from Air Force I think. Brian Green is now the head coach at Washington State.

Awhile back I hinted at the rumor that was circulating around about
several blowouts in the fall amongst staff.

Mingione and Todd was one of them.

Mingione may have thought he smoothed it over and made it up to Todd.

Todd played poker. Mingione Chinese checkers.

Has Mingione publicly thanked Todd yet and wished him well ?

Mingione went against Todd and then smoothed it over ( so he thought ).

This didnt have anything to do with the finish or Todd being ambitious and afraid to be left without a job.

Todd played chess. Mingione Chinese checkers.

Did I miss Mingione publicly wishing Todd well and thanking him for volunteering
his services ?
I’m afraid the program will be in such poor condition that it will be extremely difficult to hire a decent coach. It will essentially be a ground up rebuilding job. Barnhart will have to open the checkbook and agree on some items the new coach needs to be successful.

The tragedy with B3N resulted in a lot of people reconnecting that hadn't spoken in a long time and information was flowing as a result of it.

This is my fear as well. The longer he stays the deeper in the hole this program gets. Whoever replaces him will have to a complete rebuild.

I think its a complete rebuild today or a year from now.

Either way a complete rebuild is upon us.

As has been said already by a bunch of you. Were losing and wasting next season.

But this is the bottom. The hole cant get deeper.

Probably true but there are guys out there whose ego lets them think they're the perfect fit to fix this mess. Trick is to find the guy who can indeed fix what's broken. TN was likely the worst program in the SEC for a decade or longer then made the magic hire. Because of the very nature of college baseball these programs can be turned around quickly.

Unfortunately the hole can get deeper and we’ll see that over the next 7-8 months. I’m still going to go to some games next year and probably come to this board and complain.

It’s embarrassing how far Ming has let this program fall, especially with the former players bashing him left and right these days. I don’t even want to imagine how bad we’re going to be next year, but thankfully with the portal the next coach will have an easier time rebuilding.

I may have to do that. The ticket prices on Stubhub for baseball was beyond crazy for seats not on the blocks or grass. Who would pay $60 per ticket for a losing program?
Should be Top 15 next season and likely Top 10 if they get consistent pitching.

The portal could save us if we get the right coach. That’s a big if though.
