Jon Sumrall Watch

There have been top coordinators who have failed and succeeded, coaches from the G4 and FCS level who have succeeded and failed and even successful P4 coaches who have succeeded snd failed. There is no magic solution.

In recent years, G5 coaches who have transitioned to success at the P4 level:

Josh Heupel from UCF to UT
Kellen DeBoer from Fresno State to UW
Curt Cignetti from JMU to IU

There is nothing that says Sumrall is an automatic home run hire. He might not succeed at the P4 level, or he might kill it. I’d rather find that out with him doing it at UK than another P4 school because I think it’s worth the gamble.

That's all I am saying, success at a G school doesn't guarantee success at a P4, and same for a coordinator from a P4 . Even success at a P4 may not get the results one is hoping, look at Mullen.. But if a program has stalled, the only option is to make changes and hope it's in the right direction.

Mullen is a good example and the most recent one is Lincoln Riley moving from Oklahoma to USC.

Nice article on ESPN:

Wow!

From the piece linked, above:

“Mensah has led a balanced offense under veteran coordinator Joe Craddock that is No. 4 nationally in scoring with 41.0 points per game. Tulane is also Top 20 in scoring defense and total defense under coordinator Greg Gasparato.”

Sounds like Sumrall has some good coordinators!

Even though Tulane does not play until Thursday night, against Memphis at home, it was a big Saturday for the Green Wave.

Army suffered a crushing loss, and so long as Tulane defeats Memphis, it will host the AAC championship game. And with other strategic losses, actually has a chance of being not only a playoff team, but one with a bye, should they win out, and be one of the top 4 ranked conference champions.

No doubt Sumrall is going to get multiple P4 coaching job offers this off season. It just boils down to if there is one to his liking but you figure his pay will likely triple at least with that kind of move.

There may not be many firings at the end this year. Next year might be a bloodbath, though.

Putting Sumrall on the top of the list is a huge mistake, at least until you explore the options of who may want to put their name in the hat.
Not putting him at the top of the list is a huge mistake. When Paul Finebaum has now said multiple times publicly that everyone he talks to in the SEC says this guy is the next big coach you listen.

Not to mention he is 32-6 overall and 21-2 in conference in less than three seasons and has Tulane on brink of Playoff if pieces fall correctly.

If we're making a move, it has to be summrall. No other option.

I am going to go down fighting; I think we need an offensive minded HC. It's much harder to find a good OC than DC. Again, the name of game is to score points.

No moves being made this season it looks like. Stoops will be back.

Tulane is averaging 40 pts per game and run an offense very similar to Ole Miss without the crazy no huddle hurry up.

Tulane is a 50/50 balance. Heavy run offense. My point is Sumrall has the same problem as Stoops; he is dependent on an OC for offensive schemes.

Sorry....that isn't going to fly against SEC comp if UK is serious about climbing the ladder.

I think they put together a list, then evaluate each candidate and rank them, they don't just rank them first. Then the start making calls beginning with the top one.

With the current set-up for the playoffs, is Coach Sumralls' ceiling higher at Tulane than it would be at UK?

I would have laughed at someone telling me this at the start of the season, but he has a great chance now of being a playoff team.

Dude is gonna go to Auburn or Florida and piss me off. If we end up with Stopps again next year, I'm changing my tune on Mitch. He has to fox the football program now. Buy the fat bustard out and be done with it dude.

Go bring Sumrall home. If you fail to do this, we're coming for you top button.

Auburn nor Florida will have an opening. But Sumrall will be the top candidate for any P4 job that is open.

Summerall could very well stay put. He’s in a position to dominate his G5 group and be in the playoff picture for the foreseeable future.

They’ll undoubtedly bump his pay and most likely make some more money/resources available to football.

He doesn’t have to jump to a middling P4 gig where the road will be tougher. Especially now that playoffs are expanded.

In the era of playoffs, portal, nil, TV money being what it is even at the G5 level, coaches don’t have to leave good situations prematurely to “climb the ladder”

A G5 gig like Tulane, Boise St, etc is probably better than trying to rebuild or take the next step at a middle-lower tier P4. Sure the money in terms of salary is nicer, but the level of difficulty of the job is exponentially greater.

Nowadays it makes more sense for Summerall and other coaches in similar situations to stay put until upper middle class to top tier jobs come calling.

Sumrall.

There’s going to be some interesting openings. North Carolina,Rice possibly auburn, Utah, Oklahoma State

Rice isn't interesting, plus I think they just hired.

Utah, Okie St, nor Auburn will be open unless those coaches leave on their own.

I think UNC is a real option. They'll throw a bag at him. He'll probably turn it down and they'll hire Chadwell.

You could make a case that Sumrall is THE name this cycle. He'd be smart to wait for the really good opportunity or stay put.

Sumrall been mentioned yet?

For about 4 pages worth of posts.

Frankly, it would take an Arkansas/Cal type of miracle for a change to occur this year at Kentucky.

North Carolina??

I don’t see that job having the allure of the SEC for Sumrall.

I think you could say this about most decent Group of 5 teams compared to mid to low tier P5 jobs. It’s obviously going to be way easier to get to the playoff from one of those schools compared to the SEC, unless you’re one of the bigger programs. That of course doesn’t mean his Tulane teams would be better than his teams at UK

Lol.
Jon Sumrall is making $1M per year at Tulane.

Tulane MIGHT give him a $500,000 raise.

Compare that to the $9M we pay Stoops.

Jon Sumrall will strike while the iron is hot and he is a hot commodity. Right now he is worth about $5M/year to any P4 team looking for a young up and coming coach.

If he stays at Tulane and goes 6-6 next year, he may be a long time if ever getting another P4 offer.

Every coach is in it for the money first and foremost. It is their future they are concerned about, not some flailing AD with a team in need. Show me the money.$$$

A source said Sumrall would not have as large of an annual salary as the $4.5 million base Fritz was offered to stay at Tulane before he took the Houston job, but it would be close to the figure approaching $2.7 million Fritz reportedly made this season. Tulane, a private school, is not required to release information on coaches’ salaries.

Tulane has deeper pockets than I thought. But they'd still probably max out at $5-6M to keep Sumrall. Mack Brown was making $5M, so they could probably go up to $7-8M easily to get him.

I don't know why people think he's waiting for an SEC job when he could be set up nicely with less pressure in another conference. I'd hate to see him at UNC, but you avoid the SEC meat-grinder schedule and instead compete with the likes of SMU, Miami, Florida State and Louisville for conference titles and playoff berths. Land in the wrong place in the SEC and you're getting crosses burned in your front yard when you lose more than 2 games.
