Mullen is a good example and the most recent one is Lincoln Riley moving from Oklahoma to USC.

Our situation is similar to UGA’s with Richt: yes, the current Coach had some seasons that stood out, buuuuut, there is a feeling of moving sideways, or even backwards, for multiple seasons.

Even though Tulane does not play until Thursday night, against Memphis at home, it was a big Saturday for the Green Wave.
Army suffered a crushing loss, and so long as Tulane defeats Memphis, it will host the AAC championship game. And with other strategic losses, actually has a chance of being not only a playoff team, but one with a bye, should they win out, and be one of the top 4 ranked conference champions.

No doubt Sumrall is going to get multiple P4 coaching job offers this off season. It just boils down to if there is one to his liking but you figure his pay will likely triple at least with that kind of move.
There may not be many firings at the end this year. Next year might be a bloodbath, though.
Not putting him at the top of the list is a huge mistake. When Paul Finebaum has now said multiple times publicly that everyone he talks to in the SEC says this guy is the next big coach you listen.
Not to mention he is 32-6 overall and 21-2 in conference in less than three seasons and has Tulane on brink of Playoff if pieces fall correctly.
If we're making a move, it has to be summrall. No other option.
Tulane is averaging 40 pts per game and run an offense very similar to Ole Miss without the crazy no huddle hurry up.
Tulane is a 50/50 balance. Heavy run offense. My point is Sumrall has the same problem as Stoops; he is dependent on an OC for offensive schemes.
Something to watch.....Stoops and.....Wisconsin. They are about done with Fickell up there and he is losing the team and fan support. Missing bowl game for first time 23 years and getting blown out weekly.
Sorry....that isn't going to fly against SEC comp if UK is serious about climbing the ladder.
I think they put together a list, then evaluate each candidate and rank them, they don't just rank them first. Then the start making calls beginning with the top one.

Auburn nor Florida will have an opening. But Sumrall will be the top candidate for any P4 job that is open.
Summerall could very well stay put. He’s in a position to dominate his G5 group and be in the playoff picture for the foreseeable future.
They’ll undoubtedly bump his pay and most likely make some more money/resources available to football.
He doesn’t have to jump to a middling P4 gig where the road will be tougher. Especially now that playoffs are expanded.

A G5 gig like Tulane, Boise St, etc is probably better than trying to rebuild or take the next step at a middle-lower tier P4. Sure the money in terms of salary is nicer, but the level of difficulty of the job is exponentially greater.

Utah, Okie St, nor Auburn will be open unless those coaches leave on their own.
I think UNC is a real option. They'll throw a bag at him. He'll probably turn it down and they'll hire Chadwell.
You could make a case that Sumrall is THE name this cycle. He'd be smart to wait for the really good opportunity or stay put.

I think you could say this about most decent Group of 5 teams compared to mid to low tier P5 jobs. It’s obviously going to be way easier to get to the playoff from one of those schools compared to the SEC, unless you’re one of the bigger programs. That of course doesn’t mean his Tulane teams would be better than his teams at UK
