Jon Sumrall Watch

There have been top coordinators who have failed and succeeded, coaches from the G4 and FCS level who have succeeded and failed and even successful P4 coaches who have succeeded snd failed. There is no magic solution.

In recent years, G5 coaches who have transitioned to success at the P4 level:

Josh Heupel from UCF to UT
Kellen DeBoer from Fresno State to UW
Curt Cignetti from JMU to IU

There is nothing that says Sumrall is an automatic home run hire. He might not succeed at the P4 level, or he might kill it. I’d rather find that out with him doing it at UK than another P4 school because I think it’s worth the gamble.

That's all I am saying, success at a G school doesn't guarantee success at a P4, and same for a coordinator from a P4 . Even success at a P4 may not get the results one is hoping, look at Mullen.. But if a program has stalled, the only option is to make changes and hope it's in the right direction.

Mullen is a good example and the most recent one is Lincoln Riley moving from Oklahoma to USC.

Nice article on ESPN:

Wow!

From the piece linked, above:

“Mensah has led a balanced offense under veteran coordinator Joe Craddock that is No. 4 nationally in scoring with 41.0 points per game. Tulane is also Top 20 in scoring defense and total defense under coordinator Greg Gasparato.”

Sounds like Sumrall has some good coordinators!

Even though Tulane does not play until Thursday night, against Memphis at home, it was a big Saturday for the Green Wave.

Army suffered a crushing loss, and so long as Tulane defeats Memphis, it will host the AAC championship game. And with other strategic losses, actually has a chance of being not only a playoff team, but one with a bye, should they win out, and be one of the top 4 ranked conference champions.

No doubt Sumrall is going to get multiple P4 coaching job offers this off season. It just boils down to if there is one to his liking but you figure his pay will likely triple at least with that kind of move.

There may not be many firings at the end this year. Next year might be a bloodbath, though.

Putting Sumrall on the top of the list is a huge mistake, at least until you explore the options of who may want to put their name in the hat.

Not putting him at the top of the list is a huge mistake. When Paul Finebaum has now said multiple times publicly that everyone he talks to in the SEC says this guy is the next big coach you listen.

Not to mention he is 32-6 overall and 21-2 in conference in less than three seasons and has Tulane on brink of Playoff if pieces fall correctly.

If we're making a move, it has to be summrall. No other option.

I am going to go down fighting; I think we need an offensive minded HC. It's much harder to find a good OC than DC. Again, the name of game is to score points.

No moves being made this season it looks like. Stoops will be back.

Tulane is averaging 40 pts per game and run an offense very similar to Ole Miss without the crazy no huddle hurry up.

Tulane is a 50/50 balance. Heavy run offense. My point is Sumrall has the same problem as Stoops; he is dependent on an OC for offensive schemes.

Sorry....that isn't going to fly against SEC comp if UK is serious about climbing the ladder.

I think they put together a list, then evaluate each candidate and rank them, they don't just rank them first. Then the start making calls beginning with the top one.

With the current set-up for the playoffs, is Coach Sumralls' ceiling higher at Tulane than it would be at UK?

I would have laughed at someone telling me this at the start of the season, but he has a great chance now of being a playoff team.

Dude is gonna go to Auburn or Florida and piss me off. If we end up with Stopps again next year, I'm changing my tune on Mitch. He has to fox the football program now. Buy the fat bustard out and be done with it dude.

Go bring Sumrall home. If you fail to do this, we're coming for you top button.

UNC will be calling.

Auburn nor Florida will have an opening. But Sumrall will be the top candidate for any P4 job that is open.
