Joe B. Hall

Mentally he was there, physically he has taken a step down or two more than usual. It's the first time I've really felt the gravity of his age before.

I remember working out before class in high school around 2010-2011. Immanuel Baptist on Tates Creek was only $5 a month then for their gym. He was there working out, 5:30 A.M., mostly just soaking it all in talking to people. He was in amazing shape then for his age. Not lifting a ton, but actively working out a little and talking.

He's a completely different man now. I know that was 7-8 years ago, but I can't even compare the two images. In a way, 82 and 89 are not all that different. But I can see the difference. The age difference feels more like 20 years than 7. Time eventually catches up I suppose. I wish him the best and I hope he's loving life.
Yep. You’re right. He’s still sharp mentally.

He seems very very ill. I know he's old but his mind and body seems like....he's seriously out of it.
I don't think was a bad as you think. I believe he had trouble hearing the question that he was first asked. It was pretty noisy in Rupp last night. He had his usual sense of humor when he said he thought Cal would coach as long as they were paying him 8 million a year. He is probably slowing down quite a bit, but for his age he aquitted himself right well I thought!

I just don’t see a coach with 3 final fours and a national title as “mediocre”. If Cal stopped right now he has a great legacy. Maybe not a billy goat, but still one of the best of an era.

1975 was a sham. You can almost give that one to him too.
Hall did the impossible and followed Rupp. 3 final fours and a NCAA title. He was robbed in 1975 when Wooden said he was retiring after the title game. The officials were going to make sure Wooden went out with a title and that’s exactly what they did.
Hall also had to deal with Rupp keeping an office at Memorial Coliseum and Rupp continued to have his own TV show during basketball season. Rupp also sat front and center in Rupp Arena in a lazyboy during games. Yet, Hall didn’t complain or say a word- just kept coaching. Hall is a Kentucky treasure and should be treated as such.

I'm still pissed about the 75 game.

He’s 89. I agree that he’s not as mentally there as he was even 2 years ago.

He’ll probably be gone by this time next year.

Nothing wrong with dying at age 90 with the life he’s had. I’m 52, I’m hoping to make it to 70.

Joe B. has been nothing but a class act and a lifelong supporter and Ambassador for this great program.

Anyone that says anything negative about this man is a total loser.
Followed the creator of UK basketball. Followed THE Legend. Doesn't get enough credit for doing that. 3 FF's and a title. Joe B. takes a backseat to nobody imo.

It was a joke. UK was the much better team and deserved to win. The officiating in that game was criminal.

Do you remember when we were shooting FT's and the goal shaking from their fans moving it?

he is super old...like super. I think he looked great for his age.
Will be 90 on Nov. 30...wish these young ass "kids" would stop making fun of old people on here!! Lots of wisdom and love there and if wasn't for Joe's generation these young assholes would already be living under the socialism/communism they are craving.

Have been fishing with him and also spent a few days around him with just a few of us.

I won't expand, but did he ever tell you the way he liked to recruit?

If he mentioned that specifically, I don’t recall. It’s funny you mentioning him answering the phone though, because he did give me his cell phone number. I got a kick out of that.

In the little bit of time I spent with him he came across as a very gracious guy. But he also had a fiery, competitive side that came across in a lot of the stories he told.

Concur! I'm not sure why this thread even exists.

Joe B. is fine within reason. The man is getting on in years, but he’s worthy of respect and honor.

I can’t imagine having to follow after Rupp. It’s going to be similar for Cal’s replacement (may that day be far away). I can’t imagine how hard that would be.

I love Joe B. I love he comes to every game he can and still supports his beloved Wildcats.

Coach Hall did an outstanding job following a legend. A great coach and ambassador for UK. Truly underrated as a coach.
Just a class act in every aspect. Being the Head Basketball Coach at Kentucky has to be the most difficult job in sports and it really wears on an individual. Cal is handling it better than anyone I've ever seen but during his tenure at UK Coach Hall was very withdrawn and always seemed to have a ton on his mind. I used to see him in front of the Coliseum on occasion and he was always nice enough to say hello, however, when he was out with his wife he was tense and looked as if he didn't want to be bothered (can't say I blame him). When he retired one could tell that the weight of the world was off his shoulders and he was the most cordial, friendly individual you'd ever want to meet. I had the great pleasure of meeting him at an alumni function in Dallas back in the '90's and I have to say that there was no one better at representing the University than Coach Hall.

IF not for getting shafted in 75&76 plus Bowie's injury he may have had a couple more NCs.
I've always thought the same about the '75 and '77 seasons. I also felt as if Dwight Anderson had not left (or got kicked off) we could've had another title in 1980.

Coach Hall took over and established UK as a national recruiting power. That had tailed off in Coach Rupps last years. He took a sincere interest in recruiting. I think his 78 team is underrated. Veteran tough group that was battle tested and went wire to wire. Can’t think of any aspect of basketball they weren’t able to do. Best UK title team in my time and opinion.

I say you have no worries, don't think so negative. You will definitely make it over 70.
I just turned 81 and I want to live to be at least 85. Think positive.
When the time comes for you or me and we are called, neither one of us can say NO.
As for now, eat drink and be happy.
Know for fact I won't see 60.. Means I've got 17 more years,, tops..

It’s not every mediocre coach who can navigate his way to 3 Final Fours and a Title. I guess we were lucky.

As far as we know, anyone who isn't a drunken buffoon can show up and win a title coaching at UK. :joy:
