I need to get this off my chest

Ok, I see what you're saying now. But I just don't consider UK a powerhouse in basketball anymore. That's my take. We have a losing record in the Championship classic against Mich st, Kansas, and Duke. We haven't made a final four appearance since 2015 and recruiting hasn't been the same. Now with Antigua back, we have the number 1 class coming in and we'll see how that goes. Maybe once Cal starts making deep runs in the tournament and beating KU, Duke, and MSU fans will flock back and overlook the holier than thou personality. But till then, the seats will remain empty.
Oh I hear you and totally agree with this take.

Doesn’t matter where…. Maybe there’s more UK fan base that’s basketball first, or basketball only….and that’s OK. But football as a spectator sport beats basketball hands down …. And I started as a UK basketball fan

I love both, but Cal is a problem with fan interests. When he’s gone, and we hire a guy that’s always putting UK first, beating early big games, schedules UNC, Michigan, maybe Ohio State etc, the fans will be ready. This is all on Calipari to stop his methods and be our coach, but until he’s over the “Godfather of the NBA player”, basketball will continue to decline.

It just shows the different levels of expectations when the 2017 and 2019 elite 8 seasons are viewed as failures by people like the op. Uk has 4 titles I'm 60 years and 12 final fours in 60 years. Calipari had 1 of those titles and 4 of those 12 final fours his first 6 seasons and overall still compares better than the 50 years prior to his arrival with 3 titles and 8 final fours in that time frame. My point is uk hasn't
been super dominant since the 40s and 50s.

Attendance is a big issue everywhere in every sport so not sure that is an indictment on uk and calipari.

Football has definitely been on an upward trend since 2015 but still has a ways to go to compete for sec and national titles. I hope Stoops stays and can get them to that level. Sec is so tough though and the next step is to beat tn and FL in the same season or tn and uga or FL and uga. Need to win 2 of 3 and go 10 and 2 to compete for the probable 12 team playoff down the road.

Calipari did this to himself. No continuity, doesn’t listen to fans wishes, prepares a putrid home and home schedule, talks out of both sides of his mouth, and the biggest factor? He’s diminished the regular season and, in his pursuit to recruit young and not have to worry about losing along the way, has totally diminished the regular season.

Football is the opposite. Every game matters, just like it should in basketball.

Cals ego won’t allow him to see those empty seats are largely because of him. And until he does, it’s going to get worse.
Again, it’s been repeated over and over. But it’s like talking to a fence post.

By your logic uk hasn't been a power in basketball since 1958. I guess they weren't from 66 to 75 and 84 to 93 and 98 to 2011 and 58 to 66 and so on. You are cherry picking. This isn't new for uk.

Cal can’t control the lack of good OOC games

False. Football is more popular at every level. Except college. And that’s only because we’ve never had this kind of football success at UK before. We’ve always been the only basketball first school in the SEC, but that’s quickly changing. Fans like you will just have to get used to it.
And next year it will be Stoops must win 10 games. If he started winning 10 every year then some on here would want him replaced because he can't win the big one. Never ends.

Expectations, like I said. Tubby won a title and was ran off. In fact, Cal has missed two tournaments since he's been here including that shit show last year. Tubby never missed the tournament and was still ran off. So yeah, expectations matter.

if you're referring to number one classes, previous coaches didn't need number one classes to compete. They were actually x and o coaches who knew how to manage the game.

Name me one Power 5 team that does not play several cupcakes at the beginning of the year. Even football does the same. Please.

Its not about that. Calipari is the leader of ruining college basketball home and homes. He was the first to want all neutral court games, and now others have followed suit.

Calipari was saying this is his vision of college basketball moving forward in 2006. Hears it come straight from his mouth at a luncheon and then again several times over. He created this, just like he changed K’s approach to recruiting. He’s a revolutionary.

Until Cal decides Kentucky and the fans come first, it’s going to get worse. And it doesn’t matter if Bass, or KL, or Cal first types of fans like it or not. That’s why this is happening, and it’s going to continue.

I mean let’s be real, Cal laid the groundwork for this by first convincing the fans that the regular season doesn’t matter. So now we have a month of scrimmage type games when the season starts.

He then dismantled the idea that the SEC tournament matters. So now no one cares about that.

Now it almost feels like since he can’t win in the tournament, next he’ll say the tournament doesn’t matter because THIS IS FOR THE KIDS TO GO PRO!!!!

He’s lowered our quality of basketball and now fans are beginning to care less and less as football improves.

The only way a UK fan can’t see this is if hes got’m by the balls with his salesman routine. I’m a UK fan.

Are we feeling a little butt hurt?

College basketball has been dead for about 15 years, no need to kick the corpse. Only boomers watch and the ratings and crowds reflect that. Football would have always been the top draw here if UK had put money into it to begin with. And that goes for anywhere. If a school is evenly moderately successful in football, it will get more attention than basketball.

I've gotten way more into football. It's so fun that every game means something.

I'm also bored with basketball scheduling. The champions classic is cool and the knock off one, and the big12/sec challenge, but I feel like we never play in early season tournaments and playing poop state gets old. I mean I get you have to do a lot of those amd everyone does...but f'n schedule Gonzaga. They will accept to play.

I think this has merit, but I do think it’s overplayed. Football will always be the most popular sport, but when college basketball is operating correctly, it’s very popular. The problem is the current coaches are butchering the sport. It’s why Roy wanted out and didn’t even say bye.

They need to fix the rules, and have coaches like K and Cal make it exciting again. What’s happened here is in pursuit of maintaining their jobs for money, they’re sacrificing the enjoyment. If that’s how it’s going to be, set rules in placeX kick them out, and bring in guys who want to put a good product out there.

Even when it was popular it did miniscule numbers compared to football. Outside of March Madness, no one watches. Hell, G5 games with MAC opponents pull in higher ratings than UK/Duke regular season games. No one watches that crap even when it was big. you were just brought up in a state that pushes that narrative. But now ratings and all that data is easily found on the internet. And you can see no one watches until March Madness. And after opening weekend, the ratings go back down. Regular season college basketball barely does better than infomercials.

How can he control them?

Its soooo loooooong to get into this.

Cal is lying when he says nothing can be done. He single handedly ended it himself, he wanted them gone. He said so over and over. I was sitting 2 tables behind his when he ranted for an hour at Central in Memphis about changing the landscape of college basketball to reflect the NBA, and how traditional home and homes don’t help because of recruiting. He wants an NBA feel to college ball, and he doesn’t want the headache of heading to Chapel Hill, or even South Bend, and having to win those games because with his raw rosters, he can’t.

Where the line should have been drawn was on Indiana, but I know he’s convinced everyone the opposite so I won’t right that one.

UK fans, largely, weren’t paying attention to him back then. I’ve always said, UK fans just don’t get the guy. For whatever reason, Memphis fans get him a lot better. I think it’s because of the front end success.

If he can’t change it now, then I don’t know. It might be a runaway train. But he did cause it, and it’s hurt the game big time and it might not ever recover. I’ll always hate him for that, seeing proud UK fans cheer him on as he butchers our pastime….I hate it.

Hopefully, he hangs another banner and the next coach ends this. We get the titles, some good pros in the HOF, and can look back fondly. Our next guy just needs to be a blood and soil traditionalist to get everyone back to normal.

It’s in the TV contract. Every SEC school has to have a couple games on the streaming apps.

Agreed and also why I brought up expectations. Cal has not been producing for 5 years now and that is weighing on people as well as his attitude towards the fan base. I think Stoops is just trying to do his thing, not competing with the basketball program (really wouldn't make sense to), but his production and just attitude in general has leached on to more people.

Really this was one of the few times I agreed with Matt. Instead of Cal bitching at the fans for not showing up, he and the department need to ask why fans aren't selling out the arena like they used to and what can they do to change that.
In 2020 Kentucky was ranked 8th in the final poll and set to be at worst a 2 seed. To say Cal has not been producing in 5 years is just ignorant. In 2019, we lost in the Elite 8, meaning we were one of the best 8 teams in the country. In 2017, we lost on a last second shot to eventual champ North Carolina in the Elite 8. So, we sucked last year. As soon as our football team is one of the best 8 teams in the country 3 out of 4 years, you can make your argument, but it hasn't happened in this old man's life, and I doubt it will before I'm gone.

I was born and raised in Tennessee man, but that’s why I say it’s overplayed. UT fans love basketball, they all follow around here. Football is just so popular we don’t notice.

I’m just saying we need better rules in place, and an understanding with the programs, that the fan experience is necessary or we won’t even have a sport to follow.

I do think its hilarious to hear matt try and convince the fans that basketball is actually a draw and matters. Or maybe he's trying to convince himself.

You are so bored that you are watching the game tonight.

I was listening to KSR this morning and a caller said to Matt something along the lines of Cal continuing to preach and talk down to the fan base. Matt agreed and said he's tired of Cal doing this. Lemon then chimed in and said it probably has to do with Cal looking up to the seats and seeing all the empty seats.

Well here's my thoughts. As long as Cal is HC of basketball and Stoops is HC of football, this is going to be a football school. I know that's blasphemy to some, but let's think about this. Since 2015 football has being going up and basketball has been going down. Cal gets on these soap boxes and really does talk down to the fans like we're a bunch of idiots. Now with a fanbase this large, we're going to have some morons in the crowd, however we are the most dedicated, passionate fans in all of college athletics. No one compares. So yeah, we're going to have our opinions because we are just, if not more, invested in UK as he is.

Two: Football has given us something to enjoy that basketball has taken away from us. And that is watching players develop and becoming household names. We got to watch Benny break that record against PSU and when he did it was emotional for all of us because we watched him grow and earn that spot. Instead of having to learn a new player every 6 months we become eager to see players like Levis, Crod, McClain, Paschal, Jackson, Wright, come back and become better. I just don't feel that is a luxury we get in basketball anymore whether that's Cal's fault or not. Therefore we can be more invested in the product we are paying to watch.

Three: Football fans are not as entitled. Where basketball has always been great for the exception of a few bad coaches, we've always been a blue blood basketball program. Now with Stoops we are witnessing a basement dweller rise and compete. That is exciting! That is just so enjoyable to watch. Basketball expectations are weird. Cal just wants to put players in the NBA while the fanbase wants to beat Duke, Kansas, UNC, and make it far in the tournament (which has not happened since 2015).

I'm posting this here because I don't see this going over well in Rupps Rafters and find myself spending more time in this forum then the other. So yeah, what do you guys think? I'm curious where other fans are at mentally about this.

I'm posting this here because
I can support both sports at the same time. 🤔🤔🤔. It’s not that hard.

A few here, myself included, have been saying this for awhile now. I don’t post much anymore, but when I do it’s on the Lair, not Rafters. Would be the same if I was able to attend games. I would go to Kroger, not Rupp. Cal can suck it. He lost me, and won’t get me back. Now I’m not naive enough to think he cares, but if enough do the same, he will. And it’s coming. Ok, now waiting for Edd and Bass to slam my post and this thread. Popcorn is waiting.
Since you referenced me, you can never watch a game again for all I care. Deadwood over the side. Bye
