Kentucky Basketball, Mark Pope S1: An unapologetically biased state of Affairs by BBdK.

-Jaxon Robinson was HUGE for soooo many reasons. 1.) He's a legit baller & shooter, who is primed for a breakout season. He's familiar with his coach & system, and he's proven in the best conference in the nation as 6MOY in what was his breakout year when he really settled in. It was also huge for optics for Pope to have at least ONE of his guys follow...and it just happened to be the best one. Big win.

If there is one thing we're lacking, it's +athletes outside the paint. I reckon Oweh is the best, but Jax helps in that regard. He's far from some freak, but he's able to get/create shots and finish at the rim with ease, and the talent he's surrounded with is now on a clearly different level. He can really do it all, and can be a natural leader and "guy" from Day 1 with his coach & system familiar.

Simply put, with all of the above included, adding THIS as your class capper is a blessing:

-BYU was 12th in the NET heading into the NCAAT: 19-2 v Q234, and finished 5th in again, the best/deepest conference in the nation in year 1. At BYU. And beat 3 of the 4 teams ahead of them. (Kansas, Baylor, ISU), among others.

-Regarding our incoming portals, all of which are good-to-very good already, you have to take into account where they came from & their cast. Good shooters/defenders then? Well how about when they aren't THE focus of either end on a team full of help? + another year of experience, which rules the day in the new NCAA. They're not ALL gonna explode to another level, but a few will, and I don't see why any of them, already proven, would get worse aside from just a random shit year, which happens.

-Andrew Carr was born to play for Mark Pope. Not sure what else you could want from your 4 man, and I low-key think he's may be the prime candidate to be the biggest breakout star of the group/leading scorer. I'd be shocked if he wasn't T3.

For all the talk about "who do you go to when you need a bucket", he's gonna be in the conversation. Pick & Pop may be his game, but he's underrated in Iso/post. There is a video out there of nothing but his post ISO touches (which I can't find) and he's basically unstoppable at 6'10 with elite shooting/passing/skills for a big -- has a sweet lil NBA style just turn/fade if stuffed. And a + defender. SUPER high on him.

-Amari was super huge. He's a willing/++ passer for a big, finisher, and 3x DPOY and Sr grown man. The perfect anchor for a whitey leaning squad...we;ve been lacking true interior defense for years despite the endless 7' FRESHMAN pipeline.

-Brea? Really felt like we had no shot as that one developed, what a snag!

...best returning shooter in CBB. Size, can get his shot off vs anyone, and had to force a lot. And has never been blessed with being on a fully talented roster, nvm one DESIGNED on creating open 3s. He's not some questionable % guy who was just timely in spots, he shot 201 3s, and made 100.

For reference, Travis Ford shot 191, made 101, in the best shooting year in UKBB history, feeding off Jamal Mashburn kicks in '93. And Brea is 6'7. And surely confident AF ala Reeves heading into his finale....

-Oweh: a crucial piece & also wildcard to me. He's basically the main/only "rugged" utility guy, Butler/Ans maybe. But again, OU was pretty weak last year, and he was somewhat of a standout. Physical/dirty guard, defender, can shoot it when open, and was pretty comfortable in a 3rd scoring option role, vs the best competition in cbb nightly. Huge fan, especially given the overall 'finesse' makeup of the non centers. He made a significant jump last year, and suspect he may be the most underrated signee of them all.

,,which brings me to Butler. Clutch hero, Aztec legend, played for a Natty. And widely considered on of the best, if not THE best, on ball guard defenders in the country. Capable guy to get buckets and make open shots, but his value is as a steady hand, leader, and defender. Imagine he feels pretty good about all the new toys at his disposal. Could have been THE guy for an ever-solid program who's done more than we have of late, but wanted to go compete on the biggest stage, and take a chance for his final year. Captain. Love

-I keep forgetting about Ansley Almonor (my sister's name), but hey. Another proven player, All Conference, with a quick trigger (40% 3), who's got some size and has improved at a + rate each year he's been in college. Played in big games (Purdue upset), can defend 2-5, and had to, and a mostly forgotten high quality add.

-Brandon Garrison, to me, was maybe the biggest BOSS add we had, given the circumstances. Pope convinced a 5* MCDAA, and highly regarded prospect with endless potential by all, to come be a backup for a year. That's big time. He's not some scrub either, 8 & 6, 2 blk/apg, in 21 min, on 57%....in the B12 on a horrific team.

Also had 3 20+ nights. Bigs improve rapidly, and he has a vet mate to beat him up and bring him along.

-I guess the major question & controversial add is Kerr Kriisa. I get it. But the guy was a darling early at AZ, and stepped into the biggest shit show in CBB last year at WVU. He's not a feature guy, just in the headlines. Knockdown shooter, lifetime 2:1 ato, and he seems to know his role coming in. Confidence in outer space, and relishes being a villain. Not a bad thing given our Head Coach's purity, and the other guys we're adding imo. Pope absolutely loves the guy, and has been trying to add him for years now.../trust

-Add 2 of the T5 scorers in KHSSA history. Perry has defied odds at each stop, and Noah has LEGIT potential imo. Local flavor and continuity ftw, they aren't going anywhere.

-Oh, lol. Chandler Who could very well be a star sooner than later.

The Homer Conclusion: Given the outlash, followed by the magic, followed by having legit 0 players/assistants....I award an A- for Coach Mark Pope.

B+? I'd hear it. Anything less than that i can't really get down with imo. I dunno what else you want really, unless it's just Cal style ADD EVERY ATHLETIC STAR LEGGO $$$. Been there, done that.

I see a lot of thought into this roster, and system fits (another topic) , and given the situation, I'm beyond pleased and pleasantly surprised.

***OH, and forgot to mention that absolute homerun staff put together on the fly. JFC. A++

We asked for this. We have it. So if you find yourself starting to get nervous about our roster compared to say, ARKANSAS, or counting ***** just take a step back & deep breath. Who knows how it turns out? But I'm genuinely excited about this bunch, and think we have a chance to be *really* good, and set the tone for a new era.

***********517 D1 starts among the group. Five Hundred & 17. Most of which are P5, and to be fair, SDSU should count there. Regardless. Impossible it's ever been higher, for a roster, in UKBB history. Average age of the non-KY/Mormon freshman = basically legal adult+

Even if you dismiss of any/all of that ^^^ dave baker-esque nonsense, it feels like, and is, KENTUCKY BASKETBALL again, in too many ways to count. So my advice -----> Be excited, be optimistic, be proud that our team is back in the hands of us (of which our coach is one), and not some egomaniac psychopath— we all deserve that

🍆

...now, let's go make a legit move on the gridiron. Summer over yet? Can't F**cking Wait! #GoBigBlue!
One of the finest pieces of literature regarding UK basketball that I've ever read. Every UK fan should read this. Well done, buddy! A++

Umm, 69. And yea, this is a PHD in playoff experience. Not sure the answer moving forward. Should be interesting. Can't wait for all the Trade KAT discourse that's gonna be everywhere after this.

Just sucks they went 0-3 at home in this series. The fans there deserved better.

Time to get amped up for 2044.
Ant just signed KAT’s walking papers in the post game presser.

Team not playing together this whole series. “Missing shots.”

Perfectly said.

The Kentucky basketball program needed a spring cleaning and boy howdy are we getting it. It is amazing to see how far simple social skills and good behavior can get you. Jaxson Robinson is over here sending Kentucky fans tweets thanking them for their service when they post excitement about him committing. Lamont Butler's dad seems to know everyone who matters in basketball and SDSU fans legitimately seem to both already miss and want the best for the kid. Same thing for BYU fans with Pope. That matters.

One thing of note. We've been awed by the shooting that Pope has added to the roster and rightfully so. This sounds unbelievable, but even with all these shooters we are almost certainly not going to be a better three point shooting team than we were under Calipari last year. In 2023-2024 we shot 40.9% as a team and led the nation in 3 point percentage. Reed Sheppard shot 52% on high volume. 52%. 52%! And he might not have been our best shooter. For comparison, Shaq's career NBA field goal percentage is 58%.

The shooting is vitally important but what I think we are really reacting to is seeing Pope and Co. put together a roster that will have a coherent offensive and defensive strategy where each player has a clearly defined role in which to excel. That is a far cry from last year where the shooting numbers were insane but when you watched that team you knew that we weren't winning dick unless Reeves, Reed, or Rob pulled some hero shit in spite of Calipari.

Watching a smart person devise a plan and then execute it well is pure joy.

Thank you BBdK, that was awesome!

-Gonna go ahead and bookmark BBdk's post. I honestly forgot about 3 of those dudes and still couldn't name all 12 guys off the top of my head. I'm not out of touch because I'm despondent. I'm just hands off because I'm firmly giving Mark P a long leash to really get this sucker back where it needs to be. Maybe it doesn't work out, but so much better than the constant anxiety of trying to talk yourself into Cal changing. Plus, all the shooters.

-Big Time Major Little League Majors are wrapping up next week. Be nice to have some freedom back but I'll miss it for sure.

-This weather has been unbelievable.

-Kiddo had a sleep over Saturday. Pool, kickball, late night snacks, movie, trading cards until 1am. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't jealous.

-16 years for the GYERO Royal Couple. Wild stuff.

-Opted out of NBA for NHL playoffs. Rangers > Stars > Edmonton > Panthers

Messier is f*cking ripped. That dude looks like he should be staring in action movies.

-I'm happy for the Negro League guys. I get the semantics, and I'm typically on the other side of these things, but it feels more right than wrong in this case. If you want a couple good reads: The Soul of Baseball: A Road Trip Through Buck O'Neil's America or Only the Ball Was White: A History of Legendary Black Players and All-Black Professional Teams.

-Like I said, TDF is on deck and is setting up to be an all timer.

Care to elaborate?

Ulis doesn’t wanna be in Fayetteville??? If he comes back to UK, you know Cal is living by the same playbook and is doing the same ol.
There were stories going around that Ulis was going to Arkansas but nothing was finalized as of yet.

Pope apparently is selling him on being the 5th assistant and your top 5 assistants have no limitations on what they can do in relation to games/practices/recruiting.

Arkansas already has their top 5 in place so he’d have to take a secondary role that would have some limits involved.

Let's do some Randoms:

~ I need a Dustin Poirier sunset finish on Saturday. Doesn't have to be Gilly like everyone is clamoring for but a good dominant win to finish his career against the P4P #1 in Islam Makhachev with a potential GOAT cornering him. Would be an all timer. I really like Islam too.

~ I found out why the pup we rescued a year ago was brought in. MFER loves eating soft materials (like blankets, toys, etc.) and decided to swallow an entire ear off of a play squirrel we got him. 7k out of pocket expenses and a touch and go surgery later, I find out his internal organs show signs of multiple surgeries. Now I'm debating on pet insurance (blegh), a permanent muzzle or my dad's go to "farm in Virginia".

~ Trying to figure out a weight lifting regimen for the summer. Rarely lift weights and feel it's time to get some tone going rather than just working to not be super fat by pounding pavement. I'll slip into the FITYERO for tips.

~ Made my last payment for daycare yesterday. $20k net raise per year is gonna sit quite nicely. Told my wife we're going on vacation and I ain't going nowhere to just lay up. Eye roll x infinity.

~ Is there a bigger scam than Daycare? I'm paying out the ears to basically prop up administrative salaries. I know those young ladies aren't making over $12 an hour. Can look forward to doing it all over again in 8 years with college.

~ Bermuda is coming in nicely and finally killing off the few patches of fescue that spring up inevitably each year. Max was right, driving away from your house after a mow the previous day got you feeling some kind of way.

Oh We Making Music? Friday Five :

Sunset for the Dead - Tommy Newport
Loretta - Ginger Root
Texas Sun - Khruangbin and Leon Bridges
No More Lies - Thundercat / Tame Impala
Do Hot Girls Like Chords? - Knower

Enjoy the weekend fellas / felletes.

Sounds like you are going to need it for the dog. But I have had to pay for 2 surgeries because my dog ate something. He super well behaved when we are around but when we leave, he freaks out and becomes the Tasmanian Devil, so he has to stay in a cage when we are gone. We keep him focused on very tough things he knows he can chew on so when we are around, he doesn't go rogue.

Because of the kid farm we have in place I considered buying a daycare out to give my wife something to manage and give her hands free time with built in babysitters for our children.

I can tell you paying her 72,000 a year with 6 class leaders at $15 an hour 40 hours a week and labor was not the biggest expense.

What you are paying for is insurance! It’s flat out ridiculous what insurance rates are on those businesses.

Leon Bridges’ Bad Bad News is a banger.

UK FB Needs a LT. big hole in OLine. Get a portal surprise and we could have a legit team.

Would be dope to steal Ulis. Do it!

Busy weekend ahead:
  • Dentist in 2 hours
  • BOURBON flights /Solostove tonight
  • Lasagna production assembly line for Cape May
  • Barbecue tomorrow at friends house.
  • Church function Sunday.
  • Ricotta Gnocchi Guancale Bolognese for Sunday dinner w/sister. IYKYK.
this weather 🙏🏻

Shorts:

- Hit Ruby’s last week. Can’t even drop a snackdown anymore in here because we have people going there weekly. Sad.

- The biggest questions for me with UK basketball right now:

a) Is Pope a legit upper tier coaching talent? You just can’t reach that level at BYU. I think there’s a chance with his overall intelligence, charisma and enthusiastic embrace of modern basketball, he may be.

b) Every year some of these “good” upperclassmen ballplayers make The Leap to “great.” Which of our dudes take their game up a notch? I’d say Robinson and Carr are the most likely with Butler as a sleeper. Then there’s the Chandler kid …

- @Bonzo Cat has always been generous and helpful with lifting tips. I’d just suggest consistency, well-rounded routines (especially inclusive of legs and back) and not worrying about the amount of weight.

- Wish I could rollback in history to catch a ballgame at Crosley.

- Friday 5:

I Deserve a Drink - Morgan Wallen
Pirate Looks at 40- Jack Johnson/Dave Matthes cover
Something Like Olivia - John Mayer
Robin- Taylor Swift
Prep School Gangsters- Vampire Weekend

*UK pitching is brutal. If they had a half way decent staff, they'd be almost unstoppable.

*Josh Meloy is a new addition to the rotation.
-Met the Devil in Oklahoma
-Oklahoma Blues
-Porch Light

*Great post, Wodie. Very well said

*Heading to Beef O's shortly. Going to have a couple brews with some old buddies then walk over and watch PRP in the 6th region championship game.

You can reach "upper tier" coaching talent anywhere. You may not have the players to showcase this in terms of a W/L record, but that doesn't equate to how well coached they were, or if they exceeded their individual and team expectations. You are putting too much stock in the name brand of the school in regards to coaching. We all saw how well "coached" UK teams were in recent years.

#GoBigBlue!
After spending a lot of time in the political thread today, I really, really appreciate this post.
I can now reattach my head to my neck.
Thank you.

Let's do some Randoms:

~ Trying to figure out a weight lifting regimen for the summer. Rarely lift weights and feel it's time to get some tone going rather than just working to not be super fat by pounding pavement. I'll slip into the FITYERO for tips.

~ Made my last payment for daycare yesterday. $20k net raise per year is gonna sit quite nicely.
#1. Stop pounding the pavement for weight loss unless it's walking OR you're an actual runner. If you are a runner you should still be strength training consistently.

#2. Strength training should be the main activity for folks, especially as we get older. Easily the biggest bang for your buck and now proven to reduce body fat more efficiently than any cardio.

#3. Ease yourself in. Big, crazy, unattainable goals will kill you.

We can discuss further over in fityero. We've all got plenty of failures to help guide you along.

I’d honestly pay good money to watch him try to pitch.

Hard to believe he couldn’t at this point.

The only way to do it is like all the teaching lady lasses I saw at High School graduation. Take a large amount of semiglutides, don’t lift, and don’t eat protein. I wish I could look as great as they think they do

Me and three good buddies I slave with had had enough around 3:30 today and walked over to an agreeable outdoor watering hole a couple doors down. Drank ice cold draft beers in the sunshine and 70’s, made crude comments about all the young hussy tits that were out and about, watched the Redlegs finish the stupid Cubs. It was magical and a really great couple hours.

A couple hours later, we’re walking down the block to our office so that we can collect our things and go home, and we encounter a group of four young hussies walking the opposite direction. Their tits and asses were locked and loaded and you could just tell they were looking for a wild time.

With a decent buzz, as we’re turning off the sidewalk to walk into the front of our office, I dropped an impromptu, “hey babes, we have key cards to this place, and there’s a shit ton of booze in our roof top bar” (which sadly is true). Their response was, you’re shitting us, you’re just some middle aged dudes. And I was like, no, watch, and I opened the door, and then they looked at each other like, what the hell, and they walked in, to my surprise. So we took them to our bar.

We mixed up some cocktails for them, and we drank nice bourbon. They were all a few years out of school and working their way up the ladder. In other words, hungry for money, and powerful cock.

They asked us if we wanted to play flip cup, and I said sure, we have a board room right here. Let’s do it. So we set it up and we played a few rounds. Boys versus girls, was fun. The ringleader then decided to take it up a notch - she said “boobs for dicks.” I said, what? Long story short, loser of the round plays the next round with either their boobs or dicks out, as the case may be. At this point, I was hard. And thinking thoughts I hadn’t thought in a long time.

And then my good buddy grabs me by the shoulder, makes eye contact, and gives me the nod.

He was right, of course, and unfortunately.

The follow up to that - which is all speculation, but a good possibility - is that our one buddy is very single, mid thirties, built and handsome. He hung back with these chicks when the married losers jetted. I can’t wait to call him in the morning to see what transpired. At a minimum, it was good. Potentially, epic. Never heard of a fivesome before, but we left this dude set up for it. And he’s the type to take it and run, so…

Also need to check that he locked all the doors and turned on the alarm to our building.
