Counterpoint: There is nobody else willing to pay these two guys more than $50K/year to play basketball.

So what in TF is Gabriel's families play here? Instead of having him stay at UK and possibly develop into a potential NBA role player in a year or two they have decided it's NOW OR NEVER! and he needs to leave this year to play for 40k in the g league or possibly 80k in Europe? Is that what the hell is going on, because it makes absolutely no sense. It's so irritating it makes you want to shake everyone involved in the decision and ask them what the hell they're thinking.

Actually, it makes complete sense for those tweener guys like Briscoe and Gabriel. Their window to make a pay check playing basketball and chasing their dream is so much smaller. Go chase it, get paid, then come back and finish up school later.

I like that guys are basically getting around the 1 and done rule by reclassifying and ultimately playing their senior year of high school as college freshman

I believe most of these guys reclassifying are already a year behind in most cases.

Listen, the CBB stay 4 years for a lot of guys is up. I don't think this is exclusive to UK, although like most things, it's magnified here. Posted this yesterday, but the players intent on chasing the pro dream are leaving in bulk at Soph/Junior seasons. CBB offers very little for those guys and the "do it for the name on the front of your jersey" guys are few and far between.I'd love to have all of them back but I can't blame any of them.

NCAA, if they want to keep cashing in on NCAAT, is really at a crossroad because they are not going to keep sticking around.

That’s usually true, Anth, but not always. Not out of the realm of possibility that Gabriel could develop into a 1st rounder in two years. Continue working on his shot and improving his ballhandlind/D.

Briscoe and Gabriel aren’t the same dude.

Gabriel has been seen by 100 scouts over the past 2 seasons and they draft on potential all the time. He's no where near a draft board. He can continue to develop his game and get paid doing it without restrictions.

I'm not promoting it, I think it sucks for a college basketball, but this is what we're dealing with.

It's completely absurd to suggest that CBB at the University of Kentucky offers very little for sophomores and juniors.

These guys certainly have other options beyond the NBA Draft, but sticking around one of the premier college basketball programs in the country, a place where NBA players are drafted annually and in bulk, amateur or not, is a major privilege that offers PLENTY.

Chill out, anth.

Nope - shithole slum.

Give me the list. That's all I'm saying.

Again, you all act like I enjoy it. I really don't. I'm just calling it as I see it. You all are intent on holding onto this pipe dream of college sports from 20 years ago.

The young guys bounce b/c they get recruited over OR want to get paid.

Some dudes from Nova probably

I dunno I spent 3 seconds thinking about it but those are some guys who were "nowhere near a draft board" after their sophomore year and made it - and had extremely memorable senior years that'll last them a lifetime, and I'm sure if anyone really wanted to look into it there are hundreds of examples over the last 20 years. I'm all for being fair to kids etc etc but this new narrative that college is COMPLETELY WORTHLESS is a ridiculous overreaction.

My question is if your going to leave early with zero chance of being drafted, why did you come to college in the first place? If your window is that small then go to Europe right out of high school.
A 18 year old high school kid going to Europe is much different than a sophmore->junior. Also, assuming they all think they're getting drafted coming out of HS. So just go spend 10 months in a cush UK dorm and then $$$$.

The absolute best TV exposure the sport provides
World class training facilities (They can still use when they are pros at anytime.)
Best coaching/instruction available (Heavily restricted coaching time, especially in the off season when these guys should be working on improving weaknesses. Also, Euro and NBA teams have pretty good coaches these days)
Enjoyment of college hoops/college experience(?) :joy:
Free college education(?) :joy:

I mean, come on. To say there's "very little" in it for a guy like Wenyen effing Gabriel next season is just incorrect.
I'm sorry you don't like it but you're fighting the truth. Look at Kansas, Duke, Nova, UL.... all lost guys that are not high picks.

Get me the tally of guys that came back both seasons and didn't improve yet lost 2 years of $$. Bet it's 1000 x's longer.

Not buying it, Anthipari.

Don't have to but until they start letting kids get agents, make money and get coached all year long... there's unfortunately very little incentive for them and their families to stick around college any longer than they have to.**

I mean Wenyen is 21. Big difference in a 18 year old coming out of HS and 21 year old sophomore like Wenyen.

**Still a huge portion of college athletes that there's plenty incentive. Most just aren't good enough to play at UK.

Dillon Pulliam should come back and study computer science on his free time, I could see him down at the end of the bench with his nose in a book, lol, might come up with a mathematical way to beat a zone or something, I don't know. Whatever happened to support your school? Go cats.
