GOLF thread

Today’s top player is just the tip of the iceberg. The long ball is drawing in more excitement for the game and is going to bring in long drive bombers with legit elite games who will massacre courses. Think of several Bryson’s on the course at the same time but better.

You have that now. You aren't going to see a slew of Kyle Berkshire's w/ a Spieth short game.

We can say that right now but in time (who knows when) there will be some like a Berkshire who may not have Spieth's short game but pretty darn close. Agree, there are some bombers now but I am talking about guys with controlled ball speeds over 200+mph on a rather consistent basis on the golf course against top level professional competition. I think Cameron Champ has the highest at around 188mph, and to your point, does not have anything near Spieth's short game so there seems to be a ways to go before these type of players come around.

Not big on golf, but...

The need for longer & longer courses seems a misplaced concept. Part of the reason rounds are longer is players have to walk another mile each round. Why all the consumed space? Why all the herbicides? So yea, shorten the ball's flight.

Yep.

Wrong tees and too many hackers thinking they're professionals that need 5 minutes to decide which wedge to bury in the turf and advance the ball 5 feet.

Is there a reason so few players on tour wear sunglasses?

As far as slow pay. I may use a dozen balls on a hole but if I say I got a 4, you believe it. But I won't hold play up. #don'tplaymeformoney,i'llcheat#. #betterthanpatrickreed#

Really strong final 4 at the match play, no one would be surprised if that was the top 4 at Augusta in a couple of weeks

Most places, 6200-6400 yards is my limit, depending upon terrain.
I want to enjoy my round, play well and fast.
About 20 folks in our daily skins group. Play for cash payout on low ball. All of the older golfers love the senior tees when cash is involved. When I reach 70 years old, I’m moving up too 😀

LIV is like the moon and the PGA is like earth. No question LIV is influencing the PGA big time already.

More golf is good for everyone. Co-exist.

This whole nonsense reminded me of the completely idiotic reaction boxing had to MMA as they ignorantly feared it at first and attacked it viciously, but over time they've realized more combat sports brings in more fans and boxing benefits from MMA. It never was a threat nor a subtraction.

PGA is dumb, frankly. But they're learning.

False.

There has been world wide golf for decades.

False.

Two local golfers in the Augusta National Womens Amateur which is quickly becoming one of my favorite events to watch. Laney Frye (who I know her father) and Jensen Castle, both of UK.

But it is a STACKED field, top 45 amateurs in the world among the 70 entrants, from all over the place. All get to play a practice round at ANGC on Friday, but only top 30 advance after Wednesday-Thursday to play for the trophy on Saturday.

Thoughts on fitted clubs?

I am not getting younger, play Titleist AP1 irons, Tru Temper XP reg steel shafts, 90g which are fairly light weight and which I honestly really like a lot. But also thinking pretty seriously of upgrading to Titleist T300 with graphite shafts, Tensei red, regular, which have the highest ball flight.

Now, here is the issue, I can get a 6-GW on Ebay for $600 with the specs above. Or I can go get new clubs, professionally fitted, for about $1000. I have done this once or twice before, once with a driver (ended up changing my shaft) and once with irons (ended up 1 deg flat) but honestly did not see any appreciable value in the fitted route.

My thought is to take the extra $400 or so and spend on lessons, or other good cause.

So, am I wrong or right?

I believe you're older like myself (60 in Aug) and you have been playing a long time. Do you really see your game getting to the "next level" or do you want to still just play for enjoyment, and take the bad shots w/ the good?

Take the $400 and get a couple of lessons, and some nice bourbon. If you need to make a few tweaks w/ the new clubs, so be it.

One way to look at it. To me, it depends on how often you try to play. If you’re actually playing twice a week or more, fitting could make a difference.

I lean more towards buy once, cry once. In the grand scheme of the rest of your life, what is $400 to get a set of clubs that is at least at this time matched perfectly to your swing? Even with average swings, correct fitting equipment can help you hit more consistent shots.

Unfortunately, you both make good points, beginning to realize that "you can't take it with you" is making more and more sense, and $400 is not going to make any difference to me now or long term, but that being said, Cole is also right, I am 62, I think I can get my HCP down to 6 or so, from the shorter tees, but never was and never going to be a scratch HCP. Will have to think some more about it.

If $400 is a big deal to you then golf isn't your game.

That is irrelevant. $400 is a big deal, regardless....he isn't going to just piss it away. If it isn't a big deal, then please fork it over our way. Otherwise, cease w/ the ignorant comments.

Maybe clip a few coupons and save S&H green stamps. Whatever it is you poors do when you're trying to scrape together a couple bucks.

Best idea for golf in last ten years is the Augusta National Womens Amateur, had a really big crowd yesterday, even with a long weather delay and another tight finish. Speaking of which ANGC is where big leads go to die, shades of McIlroy, Norman and Venturi, sure enough, Zhang coughed up a 5 shot lead before finally winning in a 2 hole playoff. Went for no. 15 in 2 even though she had a two shot lead, have to believe a professional caddy would have talked her out of it, instead her dad talked her into it, which almost cost her the tournament. Great event though.

The best thing she could have done was leave her father in the gallery and gotten an experienced Augusta caddy. Overall, it’s a great event and fun to watch.

Who are all these no names at the Valero?

Koepka won the LIV today and is rounding in to form. Masters gonna be fun. Love to see Rory or JT, Spieth etc. paired wiah a LIV golfer in the final pairing on Sunday!

It pains me that my favorite course to play anywhere, Tobacco Road 15min from Pinehurst, is now crazy expensive. A course that with an occasional discount I could use to play for $49-69, now is $150+ in off season, $230-280 peak season. I love the course, but "hell no!!!".

It’s going on everywhere. Average course I played all the time went from $35 for 18 after 2 on the weekend is now almost $60 a round. It’s just getting ridiculous but the overhead/maintenance costs have skyrocketed since Covid started.

Not jealous. I'm all for anyone getting what they can. If some don't care about legacy/history fine. To say the PGA was tight with money may be fair but still the big guys made their money.

DJ- $74 million +$27mill Fed Ex Cup money
Phil- $94 milion+ $9 million Fed Ex
Garcia $54 million- +$4.7 million
Koepka $37 million + $5 million

This is before cut money which will bring them another million.

The same guys taking the big bucks are international stars, aided by belonging to the PGA, which enhances their sponsor money.

I think for a lot of people, it's the diluting of talent away from one singular competition to determine who is the best, going back to legacy for the player and how the fans feel about him.
