GOLF thread

I think this is a legitimate question. What would you compare winning a gold medal in golf to in terms of winning another tournament?
Below a major and the Ryder Cup but above a playoff event/WGC? It’s more memorable than the WGC’s if nothing else.

If you ask a player you want a gold medal 🥇 or you want this tournament what would they say?

I’d say a WGC would be equal. Kinda seems like a WGC in a way as well. Limited field. Weird entries.

One other thing but money does matter to these guys. A win in the Olympics will get you the same check as finishing 23rd in the Barbasol Championship.

Hard to rank this above a WGC when those have the top 50+ players in the world. I doubt you will find one player who will say he is going to devote the next 3 years to making the Olympic team vs focusing on the pot of gold at the end of each season.

The experience under normal circumstances is cool and a medal would be great but the event itself is barely more than a 2nd tier tour stop with the players involved.

I’m not advocating hard either way. It’s no where near a major but with 16 WGC’s for every Olympic tourney (with nearly all of them on completely blah courses), the medal just might get remembered more than winning a lot of money in Memphis.

One thing I wonder while watching this. Rory McIlroy and a few others aren't wearing hats. I'm sure their countries gave them hats to wear and they are choosing not to. I wonder how many of the players only wear hats for the advertising space. Not that I care if that is the only reason, just that it's interesting to me.

Rory said his noggin is too big. His hats are special to order hats made from NIKE. Look back at team events he is team no hat due to an abnormally huge head.

Rory said his head is too small for regular hats. Don’t blame me 😙

1. I believe Sluman's wife is a doctor.
2. Need more details on Bandon Dunes. Where'd you fly into? Which place you stay in? Favorite course? Which is easiest to walk? Costs?
We flew into North Bend airport and took a shuttle the 45-60 minutes down to the resort. I don't know what they were called but we stayed in two bedroom lodges.

As far as ranking the courses it is really tough. To me Pacific Dunes is the best overall course. The newer Sheep Ranch gets a lot of hype and it is a beautiful place with incredible views but it's layout is a little meh and it needs more time to grow in. Bandon and Old McDonald are really good too. Greens at Old Mac are a little too tricked up for me though. Bandon Trails was incredible, but it doesn't get talked about as much because it doesn't have the ocean views the other courses offer. The 13 hole Par 3 is definitely worth doing too. It's not just a thrown together par 3. They are legit holes.

Great par getting up and down from 98 yards for Xander to win gold. Great 61 from Sabatini for silver. 7 way playoff for bronze.

Is it just me, or is Olympic golf just not as interesting as, say, a major? I mean, I watched as much as I could, but just got disinterested. Probably just me.

Do a FanDuel tournament for golf. Not as fun with events that have no cuts but will make it more interesting. I’m like Phil at the US Open. I’ve finished 2nd with over several thousand players a few times but can’t get over the hump.

So… if I’m reading the new PGA schedule correctly the Barbasol is no longer an opposite field event to the Open. It’s now the week before. Huuuuuge for that event if correct.

Looks like it will be the same week as the Scottish Open but not THE OPEN. Very interesting. Surely the field will be much improved.

The Barbasol is now also co-sanctioned. It is both a PGA and Euro Tour event. 50 spots will go to Euro Tour players. Because it’s no longer an opposite field it looks like the prohibition on top players has now gone away as well.

Just saw that as well. Could not be happier!!!

While the tourney, in terms of difficulty, is nowhere near that of a major or WGC, I'd say it's still up there due to the fact you're playing for your country. That weight has to count for something. Plus the former happens every year while this happens every 4 years.

I heard the announcers talking and they said the field for the Olympics scored something like a 244 or something. Said it would be rated somewhere between the Farmers Insurance and the St. Jude tournaments.

"Fun" question. So the other day I was talking with a golf buddy from high school about early 2000s golf, the era we played in HS. He claims peak Vijay Singh in 2004-2005 is better than peak Tiger. Even after presenting facts to him, he's adamant that Vijay was better at his peak. Seems kinda crazy, no?

Don't get me wrong, Vijay was great but there are only a few players in history that were close to peak Tiger and I don't think Singh is one of them.

No, he wasn't better. The only thing he could make an argument for is that his money total in 2004 was the highest until Speith broke it in 2015. I am sure that had more to do with more tournaments played because even his wife can't stand to be around him.

That's just silly. Define "peak"....one month? One season? Two years? Five years? Take any of VJ's best of these and any of Tiger's best of these and get back to your buddy.

Peak Tiger from 1999-2001 was smashing everyone. 2004 Vijay was great and he's the only guy in the Tiger era to wrestle the top spot from him, but I'm taking peak Tiger everyday in that head to head matchup.

U kiddin me? Ur buddy is drunk.

Vijay lives around here and people don't like him because he's a dick to everyone.

Did play 9 on Stadium and got rained out. Played Valley the week before, which I think is a tougher track.

Seeing Stadium without all the stands is awesome. You can really see the bowl walking around 9.

Not really...probably won't be much of a change in field quality unless it is for those trying to squeeze in a last minute qualifying spot (like the JD previously) all others will be at the Scottish or resting up.

It would be great, however, if they moved the tourney to a course that was more of a test, even allowing a course in Louisville to throw their name in the hat. No offense to Champions, but that simply is a terrible set up, especially for fans.

VJ certainly took advantage in 2004 when Tiger was undergoing a swing change with Haney. Looks like he won 13 times to Tigers 7 in those 2 years. Id still take Tigers swing change efforts of 2 majors and 3 WGC titles to VJ's one major and wins with mostly Tiger not in the field. I bet VJ won in that time with Tiger in those fields 4 times and Tiger won all his 7 with VJ in the field.

Peak was defined as Vijay at his best (2004 to 2005) was better than Tiger at his best. Just looking at the average world ranking points for Vijay during that period hovered around 13, 4 points better than John Rahm is currently while Tiger was around 32 points at his peak. For context, the world number 1 is usually between 9-13 points while Tiger was usually between 18-32.

How well do you hit a 3 wood? I have never been able to hit a 3 wood consistently. I may hit a 225 yard shot off the deck one time and then hit 5 in a row that decrease the population of worms on my course by a few dozen. I am strongly considering getting a 5 wood to replace the 3 wood in my bag.

Quit trying to help the ball into the air. Assuming you are probably trying to swing a driver swing and “sweep it” or hit it on the upswing. Hit down into it and let the loft on the face do it’s job. If that doesn’t work weaken your grip. Oh and quit trying to watch it before you hit it. That’s all I got for ya. Good luck

I haven't played golf in 16 years but when I did play in HS I couldn't hit my 3wd or driver with any consistency. My go-to club would've been my 7-wood which I could hit up to 200 yards and always straight. My issue in tournaments was trying to match my competition, thus hitting a driver/3 wd and therefore shooting 110+. I'd typically use my 7wd in practice and would shoot in my high 80s, low 90s. Oddly enough, in my last tourney, I stuck with my practice strategy and shot a 42-44 on the front 9 and reverted back to my tourney strategy and shot a 68 on the back, lol.

The lesson, use the clubs you can hit well. Also, play from tees that fit your game, you'll have more fun. I know when I start playing again I'll start from the front tees and move my way back once I consistently shoot under 90.

My daughter is struggling to hit her 3 wood as well. Being a 7th grader playing on the varsity team she is already at a huge disadvantage with distance anyway. A friend of mine loaned her his Ping 7 wood for her to try and she really hit it a lot better despite it being a man's club and having to choke down considerably. She was able to consistently get the ball into the air where she just can't do that with her 3 wood. I think I may get her both a 5 and 7 wood.

Needless to say, I disagree (but I am not objective either 🙂 ). I did email the club manager and suggest that it would be nice to figure out a way to get fans from the clubhouse area to the middle of the back nine more easily, instead of having to walk the entire nine sequentially. You can easily walk from the clubhouse to either the 5th or 6th tee on an easement or Avenue of Champions, but it would be great to be able to get more fans on the back 9 in the same fashion to make it more fan friendly.

Hard to say what course in the area would be a test for these guys (not counting Valhalla or Olde Stone), Champions is 7300 years, but even so, no. 5 and 15 are just too easy as par 5s for the modern pro, pretty much a gimme par, birdie nearly every day is essential to have a chance, so that is 5 or 6 under just on 2 holes, before you even get to the rest of the course. But like I said, pros shoot 15-20 under on most courses these days, that is just the way it is.

We ought to get together to have a beer sometime to talk golf, maybe you can tell me how to break 80 again, I used to be able to do it, now seems like an unthinkable achievement.
