GOLF thread

Any recommendations for an app that allows you to track all scores and pairings for a golf trip.

I’d like one that allows handicaps to be entered manually or edited for trip purposes. One that allows different scoring formats would be great too.

Thanks.
I am not sure about Handicaps or scoring formats but we use the 18 Birdies app to keep scores for stroke play. It keeps scores for several players and also has a nice GPS maps with distances if you use that but each user has to set up an account. One thing I like is that you can put in if your drive was in, left or right of the fairway, if you were on the GIR and how many putts you had to see your stats at the end of a round.

How many shots do you give away in a normal round just because of stupid mental mistakes?

Im pretty sure I gave away about 8 shots just making stupid mental errors my last round.

Silly things like not realizing the creek is in play down the left side, not checking my alignment to make sure I’m aiming where I think I’m aiming, not verifying yardage and having too much or little club.

Golf is such a mental game and I really need to improve my on course management and stop the stupid mental mistakes.

Does drinking too much beer count as a mental mistake, or a physical mistake?

I actually have a problem when drinking too FEW beers. I do not relax, play better until after consuming 4-5 beers. Kind of knocks the nerves off a little. Helps me relax, and focus. Still not worth a shit, but play less shitty golf after 4-5. I usually open my first beer while getting ready to Tee off at the second hole. Over a round of 18, I usually consume 7-8 beers. 9 if it is really hot outside.

Just the opposite here, I never drink in the morning at all, and if I am in a tournament or playing for money (which 80% of the time I am), won't touch a drop until no sooner than late in the round where it won't affect me, maybe one beer on the back 9, if that. Three beers for sure is at least one too many to play my best.

OTOH, if I am playing like ish, and my plight is hopeless, may alter the above rule a bit. 😄

My biggest issue is I am a slow starter and that is 100% because I do not warm up properly and as I have gotten older I have lost some flexibility and always takes me 5-6 holes for my muscles to loosen up enough to where I feel like I have an effortless swing. Been lucky not to get nervous on the course but I also do not play in big time tournaments and such. Just small gambling rounds that is not going to make or break me.

Biggest weakness these days (besides not playing enough) is my wedges are a mess and I cannot make putts to save my life. Basically, I lost all of the "feel" I used to have but if I get out and practice and play more I think it will come back but FatherTime is undefeated and I am def feeling my 40's now.

HTF does that even happen ? Somebody should have been on his ass with a quickness. Odd scene that was watching. At first I thought he was just going to jack his head cover or cover and club and bounce.

One thing that really makes me nervous still, is teeing it up on the first tee with about 6 or 7 carts of complete strangers lined up watching me tee off waiting their turn. I am constantly thinking to myself, "please do not skull this one, please do not shank this one. Just get it airborne and out there a bit." When I hit a nice drive, I always do the little cocky strut walking off the tee box, maybe even a club twirl of sorts, very minor though. Of course when I do shank one, I always grab and rub the lower part of my back and just slowly walk off the tee box as if i did not properly loosen up. May even take a look at the driver and kind of rub the club head as if their was something "off" with it. If real bad, will even rub my hands on my pants and rub them together as if my hands where sweaty and it was a slip. Then will scurry along and hurry up to finish the hole and tee off at the second before anyone approaches and sees my shit show 2 holes in a row.

No, Larry The Cable Guy has the lead.

Oh and he’s 57th right now. Don’t act like UKO. LOL.

Give 18 birdies a try. I’ve used it before, but not much. I think you can edit handicaps for others if they sign up as well. I think you can use the free version for that.

Was just getting ready to post about the Euro tour. One thing I have been doing recently and really enjoy is Saturday and Sunday mornings about 7AM turning on Golf Channel and watching the Euro Tour. Some really ugly ass courses, but also some really neat ones. I always cheer for the few Americans in the running.

Names commonly seen on the leaderboard :

John Catlin
Johannes Veerman
Julian Suri
Sean Crocker
Kurt Kitayama
David Lipsky
Sihwan Kim

And before blowing up, Morikawa.

LOL. I was watching some of the Scottish Open and told my wife that was an unusual course for Scotland because it was too green.

I knew when he laid up in regulation he was going to choke. I was like why ? Elevations makes it a short par 5, and not only did he lay up, he did it over in the rough. At least advance it to within 100 yards or so. Romo didn't lose, he just ran out of holes.

Exactly why is Sorenstam allowed to play ? Guys like Kenny Perry should play if older pros are allowed to play. Could you imagine him on that course ???

Jack Wagner (who I always enjoy watching in this event) if he did not have a terrible 12 point round 2, probably wins the thing. He was rolling the last few holes.

Steph Curry with the pot boi !!! what a eagle, damn near double eagle. He definitely went 0-100 real quick.

Shout out to Lucas Glover, first win in 10 years. He has now won on tour in the 2000's, 2010's and 2020's. pretty amazing, only 4 tour wins, he spaces em out.

Anybody else going to catch any of the Barbasol at Champions? Thursday at least will be perfect weather, and it seems like most of the field from last week’s John Deere are entered at our tournament as well, including about half the top ten. Should be a lot of fun. (fingers crossed for a dry weekend, last two times were a TON of rain)

Well Annika is good for ratings and she lives in Tahoe so I’m sure that is part of it. And my guess is the guys who beat her love to tell people about it.

Id say because shes 50 and plays from the tees the men do is one reason. She certainly could win it in the next few years.

The reason I asked was she is a pro golfer. She plays in a celebrity tournament and is the first pro golfer I have seen play in it. I did not see her tee it up from the same tees as the men. Maybe Par 3's, but it seems like pro golf players would not be able to play in celebrity tournaments, I mean handicaps are used. Once again, not a big deal, was just curious as to why she was in the field, I enjoy watching her play, she is a legend.

I have no idea if she played from same tees as men. I’m guessing she did. But handicaps aren’t used in this. It’s a stableford scoring system.

Not exactly. The tournament in Tahoe players get a point for a par, so they do get a little bonus compared to PGA stableford scoring, pars are 0 points. But my whole point was a pro golfer playing against amateurs they should be able to be in the running. While guys like Jack Wagner, Romo, and Smoltz, etc. are pretty damn good, playing against former top pro golfers (women included) is kind of a disadvantage, especially not getting strokes as she also scored 1 point for a par. I get it, it is a fun, charity event, but they are competing for a championship, no way pros should be under the same scoring format as the amateurs. JMO. It is a very fun event to watch, I never miss it.

Edit - She did play from the same tees as the men.

I said no big deal, it just seemed a little odd. I was actually cheering for her. The main reason I posted about her was i had never noticed a pro playing in a celebrity tournament that is all. I hope she wins the US Senior Women's Open this year. She has never competed in it, be cool to see her add that to the trophy case.

I just bought an Apple watch and not only can I put in the scores and shot tracking on it but with a quick glance at my wrist I can get the yardage to the front, middle and back of the green. I do wish I could get yardages to hazards, sand traps, etc but I can always look at my phone for those things.

Quick trip to Tennessee last weekend, annual event that we've been going to for years. Group has grown to 32 players this year  . Pretty sure we're just renting out the entire hotel next year.

Been doing this trip for years so its basically a well oiled machine at this point. Saturday morning-Sunday morning is a two round stableford tournament complete with calcutta. Friday is basically an all day drunk fest, skins games, side bets, etc. Saturday afternoon is a scramble followed by steak dinner and this year we managed to rent the McGregor fights in the hotel bar with plenty of cash flowing for each fight between about 15 of us. Almost always the best weekend of the year.

The (British) Open on the second monitor and a light workload should make this an easy end of week. Hope Teater can hang around.

Pretty cool to see Trey Shirley make the field at the Barbasol. Hell of a Monday round.

Went out to the Barbasol today. Seemed to have a good crowd. Fun to follow John Daly and Ricky Barnes for a few holes and catch a lot of other random action. The course is pretty easy for the players, but Smylie Kaufman somehow shot +15 or something embarrassing.

I noted in another thread that I wish this tour was in a different month. Bad forecasts loom for the weekend....again.

Is Daly leading?
