Dickinson said UK was "a risk."

Change is not always a good thing.

NIL and the portal just flat out suck, and I honestly question whether the game can survive for very long.

It was either Oscar returning or NIL money. And it also sounds like the one thing that was swaying him, was Cal's ability to get bigs into the league. And then you have this below. Kansas outbid everyone else.

Oh boo hoo, I’d be really sad to make $90,000 playing basketball for a year.

You realize no salary cap will destroy competition. There will be the Yankees who can buy up all the best players and the rest are my Reds who can’t compete
You realize this isn't a salary right? Players can now make money on their name, image , and likeness. There is no cap for that anywhere. Pro athletes can endorse and make as much as they can get

Kid probably won’t make it in the league. Needs every guaranteed cent now. Would I want him? Sure. But I cannot stand that lack of compete. Give me Keshad. Don’t care if he can’t shoot. He can win.

Cool....so you're ok with someone paying say, 10M for a player not even in the NBA lottery zone?

I'm not a socialist, thanks. Salary caps literally exist in the NBA. And the NHL....and the NFL. Heck, even the MLB has a "luxury tax" to curb some spending. They use them to curb costs, and to help foster a more competitive game across the league. Yet here at a lower level, it's the wild west.
We have an NCAA led by imbeciles who opened this can of worms without a second thought about the fallout and how it it will effect smaller institutions in areas who don't produce much wealth to pour into nil. Stevie Wonder could have foreseen the need for caps. Emmert/ Baker not so much.

That’s just how it is now, all about who pays. I don’t like it either but UK has to get with the times and start throwing money if we want the top players
UK has to get with times if we want to start getting top players. Right now we’re stuck with DJ Wagner, Bradshaw, Edwards, Dillingham, and Sheppard. It’s sad how far we’ve fallen behind.

I don’t begrudge the kid for getting as much as he can guaranteed. He’s not gonna get a big run in the NBA and the difference between $1 and $2 million is life changing. Whether they admit it or not, everyone here in his exact same position would do the same.

Wish UK could’ve got him. If Oscar doesn’t return we gotta find an option in the portal.

It becomes more obvious every season that all freshmen aren't the answer.Cal is the only one who hasn't learned that.

You think all freshmen is the problem and not his god awful offense? We started one freshman vs St Peters, we started two freshmen vs Kansas State. The offense is the problem and it always has been the problem.

Cal started 3 freshmen his only title. 2014 runner up started 5 freshmen, 2011 Final Four started 3 freshmen. Nah, his coaching is the issue, not the age of the talent.

Based on HD's lack of results for Michigan's team maybe the real risk is HD...

Plus it's all about the money as he's said in more ways than one...

I don't understand that aspect because if he committed to Kentucky, Oscar was gone. Oscar is likely gone anyways. This entire situation is tiresome and odd but just makes me glad Dickinson is going to be in Lawrence instead of Lexington.
Never was comfortable with HD. Seems like a me me guy. A friend in !Michigan and UM fan said HD was a locker room problem. Had problems getting along with the younger players.

Jeez guys, wake up. Risk is a common financial term. Agent or FP basically advised him of the risk of lower income at KY and he bailed. This is “Show me da money!!” in its simplest terms. The kid is obviously not s rocket scientist. He just parroted a term he heard an adult in charge using. He isn’t playing here because whatever entities that pay NIL at KY got outbid. It will happen again. Often. Welcome to NIL and the portal. Don’t let your head explode every time the wunderkin of the day learns a learns a bit of grade school financial lingo.

You ain’t seen nothing yet. Wait till they unionize. Don’t laugh….

Also, contracts will be on the horizon. States offering tax incentives. All this crap is possible with time. Semipro College Sports. Corruption on a scale no one could imagine. Next year? No. 10 years? Oh hell yeah.

The game we knew is dead. Died at the hands of the California State Legislature. When it died, Ky was the greatest program in existence. I have no idea what we are now. New ball game.

I can't disagree with anything you stated Bass.

Not only are these things possible but, IMHO, quite likely.

Dude is gonna make 4 million in 2 years. If he's not stupid he will never have to work another day in his life. Invest some of it in the right places; live off the interest as spending money. Pick up a side hobby and monetize it for some extra cash.
He's still a risk and not making 4mil in 2 years... If he was that good he would already have gone to the league. He will be in Spain end of next year.

This. The only high recruits coming here are doing so because of their perception that Cal will get them to the NBA. The offense is putrid. We've had kids who can knock down threes, but the offense doesn't generate looks. No cuts, very few lobs, no backdoor passes. It's just dribble dribble dribble, and forced shot.

I know I am probably going to get slammed but I really didn't like this kid and it goes back to when he tried to insinuate UK was afraid of Michigan when we canceled on that game during the COVID year.

He has a disdain for us. He has family in Paducah apparently and when asked he didn’t want to talk about them. Would’ve been nice to have his skills but I think he’s a culture bomb waiting to happen.

I would assume the risk was non guaranteed NIL whereas Kansas guaranteed him an amount from a collective or something
This. He isn’t a lock to be a big money guy at the next level. He’s probably worth more in college. If Kansas was guaranteeing a pay day and we were showing what he could make w local companies then he’s likely saying he took the guarantee bc he needs to ensure he gets 1 big payday at minimum

Exactly...

Anyone who has an ounce of common sense can read what Dickinson said and understand that with Oscar potentially returning, it would cut into Dickinson's minutes...

I don’t see how you could come to this conclusion. Cal has in his tenure sent guys to the pros countless times that were not featured in college. He went on tour after 2012 talking about the 1 and 2 picks getting the 6th and 7th most shots on the team or something like that. Every year since 2010 there have been almost a player every single year that if Kentucky wasn’t on the front of the jersey they would never dream of putting their name into the draft.

Cal has stated he isn’t playing the NIL game and buying players. Other schools are promising X amount of money.

Some guys are willing to take that risk and talk to current players and figure they will make a good deal at Kentucky. Others won’t like it.

Common sense would suggest otherwise on what HD meant by Risk. Because promised NIL is 0 risk. He comes in and doesn’t score a single point he gets $4 million. Maybe getting a deal that pays a good amount then hopefully going to the NBA is actual risk.

Were AD, Boogie, Julius and Bam ever not going to play in the NBA? Really, who were the big guys that Calipari coached that he molded into NBA players?

It is amazing that a college basketball program that has been under criminal investigation for many years for cheating is still allowed to play and recruit. Our NCAA system is broken when certain programs get preferential treatment over others. It's going to be a great day when the NCAA finally brings down the hammer on the cheating Kansas Jayhawks and Bill Self. It is loooong overdue.

The Dick-sta is a clown! I remember a couple of days ago when he posted on twitter “the radar sign” signifying that top player Mgbako was going to commit and be the missing piece to a title for Kansas….welp…fast forward a couple days and Dickenson deletes the post and Mgbako is off to play for Woodson
