Dickinson said UK was "a risk."

Cool....so you're ok with someone paying say, 10M for a player not even in the NBA lottery zone?

I'm not a socialist, thanks. Salary caps literally exist in the NBA. And the NHL....and the NFL. Heck, even the MLB has a "luxury tax" to curb some spending. They use them to curb costs, and to help foster a more competitive game across the league. Yet here at a lower level, it's the wild west.
Yes I’m OK with a someone getting $10M or any amount of money for that matter, you are worth what someone is willing to pay you. Those salary caps were collectively in some pro sports were collectively bargained with a union. The union negotiated and agreed to it with the owners.

You can call it the Wild West if you want but it’s just free market principles. Should we be able to cap how much money Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos makes? I’m guessing you think that’s different.

KAT, AD, Willie, Cousins? Did he forget? Oscar, our "big" this year was a two-time All American and NPOTY. What a jackass.

He isn’t and he is.

He’s playing a sport….and not even at a pro level and he’s whining he’s not making enough.

I get it. But at the same time. We’ve got some teachers in public schools barely making 40k and he’s acting like he’s owed millions when he’s not even on NBA draft boards.

NIL is great in concept. But it’s gonna have to be capped somehow.
Players at UK have had fake jobs and $100 handshakes back when my Dad talked about the Cats in the 40’s and 50’s. Most of the players made more than most fans, just on the side. They can make a cap on NIL but it will be a grey area people will get around the cap.

Something like how it's managed in the pros are going to have to happen at the collegiate level or it's going to spiral way out of control.

NCAA is the governing body; yet they basically do nothing. Universities and athletic programs have basically agreed to abide by "rules" to participate within the governing body.

As for your other remark, That's private sector....so, yes, it is vastly different. But even there financial rules so to speak. But no. Government has not business capping private sector as the State has no business owning private sector commodities.

Regardless, there are seemingly no ground rules for NIL right now. What's to prevent tampering? Or buying players off other teams? Again, even the pros have guidelines and rules for this to keep a competitive playing field.

I don't think he's acting like he's owed that money, it's just he's being offered over 10x the amount he was getting at Michigan. Who wouldn't leave their current place for a 1000% increase in salary?

Also, blame the shitty government for teacher wages. It's an absolute sham.

His attitude sucks. That's not helping his image. He also strung UK along in the process. I doubt he even had any intention of coming here ever. He and Self will fit perfectly together.

Just a symptom of our free market so to speak. (Not saying the principle is bad....its what we value within that market). We as a people dont care enough about cops, teachers, firefighters, etc. We'd rather keep paying millions of dollars to watch people dribble a ball. Again, not saying what they do isn't great. But we wonder why we can't find people to do those jobs, while we drool over folks that can put a ball in a hoop. We're getting exactly what we've asked for in a lot of ways. Grand ain't it?

Dickinson made one telling comment about his "recruitment." This from an ESPN story:

Dickinson said he strongly considered every school on his list. He called Kentucky a "risk" but said coach John Calipari's reputation of sending big men to the NBA was a factor.

A risk. Cool.

A risk that Oscar would return, obviously.

Exactly...

Anyone who has an ounce of common sense can read what Dickinson said and understand that with Oscar potentially returning, it would cut into Dickinson's minutes...

No it won’t, guys will get paid on their value to the market.

You think Hunter Dickinson’s name image and likeness is controlled by the government? Hate to tell ya but his name image and likeness is the private sector too.

Of course not.

Yeah, because what we have going on now is great for the sport.

Maybe he saw how UK sucked in the Tourny the last couple of years.
Yeah, that was it. He watched us lose in round 2 while he didn't get in at all. The peanut gallery is the worst, most mopy, crybaby in all of sports.

Thanks for agreeing we sucked the last couple of years, jerk.

It was either Oscar returning or NIL money. And it also sounds like the one thing that was swaying him, was Cal's ability to get bigs into the league. And then you have this below. Kansas outbid everyone else.

Can't blame him. Being born with genetics like his is a lottery ticket. Cash in while you can. Don't blame UK either (for not guaranteeing him money), guy seems to be locker room trouble IMHO.

If his basketball career doesn't work out long term he is probably in for a rude awakening in the real world because he seems like a total jacka$$. He certainly comes across that way.

You realize no salary cap will destroy competition. There will be the Yankees who can buy up all the best players and the rest are my Reds who can’t compete

Not sure if there needs to be a cap so much as what IS and ISN'T NIL needs to be defined. I'm all for the players making as much as they can when colleges follow rules in place. Right now it is the wild west and there is nothing set in stone about what/how these players are making money. It is 100% pay for play now.

The NIL currently evened out the playing field but I could see eventually teams start throwing a shit ton of money at players and dominate, flipping the tables to a have-have nots situation. Those mid-majors and major schools that simply don’t have the money left behind. There’s no reason certain teams shouldn’t throw money at players right now, while its legal p(including UK).

College / university is about making money after you graduate. This perversion of college athletics is unsettling to me.
I get the whole thing, I understand.

Both things can be true though:

1. Good for college athletes for getting theirs. They deserve whatever they can get.

2. College basketball was at its best when it was truly amateurs playing.

College basketball sucks right now.

Yep. He’s a selfish something.

“I got less than 6 figures for playing a sport at the collegiate level”.

Cry me a river. I don’t mind them getting paid. They should’ve been. But this “well now I’m not getting paid enough” while their peers in other programs around the college aren’t even making double digits is ludicrous.

Greed is killing this country.
99% of those students on that campus aren’t making 6 figures if anything at all. The ones that do are putting most of it towards their tuition, something DICKinson never had to worry about, being a scholarship athlete. Yeah, greed is killing college sports.

Name image and likeness isn’t a salary. The schools play the players nothing. They make money off of their name image and likeness. Do you believe we should cap all salaries to make it more even for everyone or does this just apply to athletes?

UK is lucky they dodged this locker room cancer.

Agree. Next year is going to be a blast. Starts off with a LEGIT QB transfer in Football and then ease into Basketball with some great players coming in. I love the entertainment and couldn't imagine getting bent over it when it's nothing more than kids playing a game.
