D-League

Good morning folks. Taking a break from a busy work day to check in.

Enjoyed the chatter about Copperas Cove and Waco. Had some good times at both spots, I did a "long embed" with then 2-star Gen. Ray Odierno in 2003, which meant I lived at Ft. Hood for over two months with soldiers getting ready to deploy to Iraq. I then flew over with them to Kuwait (it was supposed to be Turkey, but their parliament vetoed that at the end.) I felt it was a necessary commitment if I wanted to do the job right and treat what the soldiers were doing with respect. While there I became pretty close with a light colonel running a battalion who lived in Copperas Cove. Had some pretty cool times with him and mid-level officer buddies.

As for Waco, when Bush was prez, no one but me wanted the duty of hanging out and covering him during his vacations at Crawford. So I'd go to Waco and drive back and forth to the junior high gym in Crawford where the press was staging. Easy days. I'd get up real early and run along the Brazos out to Baylor and back from downtown a couple times. Very pretty along the river as the sun was coming up.

I see the Cats are scouting some Euro bigs. Hope they can sign that kid from Croatia. He sounds like a beast.

Have a good day folks.

My friend is from Jordan. He has two degrees in Math in Jordan, then moved to the U.S. and got three more degrees. Undergrad at Troy State, Masters and Ph.D. in North Carolina. The Ph.D. is in statistics. He speaks arabic, french and english. I can't speak english well.

He sees me every July before the fall semester starts. We used to work on a web site together.

Had a decent dinner and stopped a couple other places and just returned home. Coffee and some Lutz mix. (Found that stuff online cheap.)

Below was our dinner. It's gone now but not forgotten... ;)

A cold noddle soup with a side of beef ribs. It tasted as good as it looks. Again, I am thankful... (The cold noodles were seasoned well. I'd say spiced but they were not spicy hot to eat.) Various side dishes and hot barley water/ tea to wash it down.. A pleasing meal...

Good morning folks.

Heading out for a walk on an overcast day.

Lots of buzz on Rafters that the Cats may be adding a 7’2” Croat. Boy, I hope Kentucky gets this kid. He looks terrific in game footage I dug up.

The Croats love basketball as much as Kentuckians. I remember 30 years ago in June I had gotten out of besieged Sarajevo and was in the beautiful Croatian resort city of Split when word came in the national hero Drazen Petrovic was killed in a car crash in Germany. Man, the grief was everywhere. Remember Petrovic? He was playing -and starring -in the NBA, one of the first Euro players to really breakthrough. Sad.

Reds pick up a full game last night. Half game out.

Morning Legionnaires!

74° this morning with light winds. Triple digits for the high coming. Have not gone fishing this week and probably will not next week. Need a break in the heat with some morning cloud cover to keep it cooler for longer.

Went to Friday night karate class at my friend's church last night. Usually go Mondays and Friday nights. Friday nights are sparring nights. While there, he asked if I could help him, and his brother move from his brother's old house to the new one he just bought by Lake Lawtonka in Lawton (cue Homer Simpson drooling ("Ahhhrggggg fishing"). He must be out of the old house by Monday afternoon. I agreed and asked how many people were helping us. He said his brother (right shoulder in a sling right now), his two nieces, his brother's wife and us two. What? Luckily, the 20-year-old brown belt was listening and offered his assistance and said he would bring a friend. I told my friend to tell his brother to get up early because of the triple digits temps still hitting us now.

Way to go Reds at the Dodgers last night.

Well, got to get the monster going and then to the shop for a workout.

You folks enjoy your weekend and God Bless.

Looks like one more day of HOT & HUMID temps here in Louisville. I'm hoping the rain in MO right now makes it over here. For all of you in the heat, stay cool as best you can.

I saw some of the news footage of the UFO hearings in Washington this past week. It looked like comedy hour. They should have called me in, I would have set the record straight! 😁 👽

No issues.... Those are egg noodles but I see your point, That is the un-mixed version... spaghetti on roids.... Oh, don't worry, it is gone already. It will not attack you. 😁

Of course,

I'm eating some of these this morning..

A big chunk of those are gone too.... I'd feed ya but...

Been staying inside as well. Had hip replacement 8 weeks ago. All was good until about the 5th week I started having thigh pain. Back to walking with a cane. Seen surgeon, x-rays showed all was good, but still cannot walk without a cane. I see him Monday with the thoughts he may have to do it again, who knows. Had the other replaced about 15 yrs. ago, and nothing like this. Thats why I've been staying inside not doing a dang thing except an occasional beer or two on my swing. Things will get better.

Good luck with it. I expect someday to have a new knee. I tilt to the left when I walk and fall if I get up to fast.

Oh we couldn't afford meatloaf, but I can afford it today. We usually had a slice of white bread with our beans and taters.

Sir,

I yearn for those now and cook them every once in a while. Yeah growing up beans and spuds were a near daily norm IF I could get that. (I was thankful if I could.)

I eat pretty well now but I guess now production is a concern... back then it was money.

One of my favorite things as a kid, going to my grandpops knowing he made a big pot of navy beans and ham hocks. Add that to a big chuck of his skillet cornbread (not that sweet cake stuff) with a bite or two of green onions. My wife makes it for me now except she likes pinto beans better. Not going to bicker about what bean as long as I get some. Big slice or two of fresh maters is icing on that cake!

You grew up in a city and I'm a bit older than you. I recall the old out houses at both grandparents house and at our own. Mom and dad grew up in the depression and had to quit school in elementary school, so we didn't have much for a long time. I recall once at a house we were renting; dad was working the night shift at a hosiery mill. Mom worked days. The landlord came knocking at the door wanting rent. Mom grabbed me and ran into a field behind the house to hide because she didn't have the money. With both working, we eventually got a little ahead. Times got better.

Butter and honey on those biscuits and I am good.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 79°F and clear. Expecting triple-digits again today.

Attended late brother in-law's memorial service yesterday. Highlights:

- One of BIL ex's showed up as service began to "support her daughter" (read: "start crap"). Wife, and BiL girlfriend against BIL ex and her sister. Shoving ensued between all four women. F-bombs dropped. Funeral directors threatened to call police if BIL ex and her sister did not leave. What a mess. Order restored. Service held.

- Talked to wife's cousins for quite a while. One cousin has lung cancer. He saw a doctor in March, who prescribed one-time stem cell therapy. He'd used an oxygen bottle and could not walk across the room without it. Said he thought stem cell therapy was a waste. In May, he removed oxygen and has been comparatively fine since. Luckily, I don't have breathing issues, but plan contacting his doctor soon. Could be a game-changer. One can only hope.

- Same cousin's grandson leaves for Fort Benning BCT tomorrow. I wished them good luck. Happy the young man will serve his country.

Heading out for a hike soon. Y'all enjoy your Sunday.

Good morning folks.

Loving the talk of navy beans and cornbread. My mammaw (dad’s mom) who lived way down in the holler in Bracken County always had beans going in a big pot, maybe some green beans cooked in bacon fat and made the best salty, crisp at the edges cornbread I’ve had to this day.

Long long hike yesterday. I’d registered nearly 30,000 step by end of day. Taking it easier today.

Go Reds. Another day with a chance to take over first place.

Crazy stuff there...

Back in July2006 one of my twin sons was getting married and my mother (unbeknownst to me at the time) invited one of my Ex-girlfriends to the wedding. She used to be my mother's neighbor (that's how we met) and they were still good friends (even though she dear Johne'd me with a letter while I was in the Gulf). My wife now already uncomfortable with my ex-wife being there (the mother of my son) was pissed at me for a few days after because my ex-girlfriend was there. She tried (the ex) to give me a hug but, I kept her at bay.

My ex-wife did not help the situation as she and the ex-girlfriend chatted away loudly referencing days past and how well we had done together raising our twin sons. To top it all off, at the reception party, the ex-father-in-law comes up to me and my wife who was holding our 7-month-old daughter and says in a very loud voice: "So, this is the woman who took you away from my daughter". Ignoring the fact that his daughter and I divorced in April 1990 which afterward I started dating the now ex-girlfriend who was there. I did not meet my current wife until October 1996. He knew that too but was being an ass.

I did not respond because it was my son's wedding and I wanted it to be without incident.

74.9°F on our way to 89° with a 20% chance of rain. Last night around 9:45 we got a really good rain (.74"). We needed every drop of it.

Sherry and I watched three movies yesterday. First time in a long time, three in a row, but it was hot and that sounded like a good plan.

Thank goodness I have been married only once. No ex's, no trouble! An occasional ex girlfriend but that is easy to ward off. Low drama is really good.

Geez MdW,

I hit 20k steps and felt I had accomplished something. Thanks for bringing me back to earth. How many steps on a hike did you do before hip replacement and before you had hip issues if I may ask. Sounds like you are back to near normal but curious as your worst days walking/ hiking seem to be my best. (Admittedly I NEVER had good legs, ever.) I could say inspiring but that would be incorrect. More like putting a brudder in his place to stay. ;) (Granted, I know I hit many days like those steps in the Army and very probably more most days BUT, I was in my very late teens and early twenties. I sure never counted them... but can guesstimate.)
