Good morning D-League.

Sunny and mild in the east.

Taking it easy this morning after a long hike yesterday.

Reds go back-to-back-to-back to win yesterday.

Today, Cincy’s old 3b man, Scott Rolen, goes into the Hall of Fame. I think he played for other teams or team as well, but still glad to see a guy go in I watched from the seats in GABP.

Hope you all have a good day.

Morning folks. It is a sunny 76.2°F and we are supposed to get to 85° for a high. Yesterday it was supposed to get to 81°F but made it to 85. So I suggest that we will top out at about 88°.

I was a very lazy boy yesterday. I may be very lazy again today.
Let the games begin! Coach potato games that is. #Me too! Will be watching the Reds game shortly.

Bought my two grand children here a couple of the classic light brite's. Just picked them up at Walmart after we left church. My oldest took both to Costco to walk around.

Yeah, I am sitting at my computer. Plans are sparse this afternoon. Do plan to vacuum out the wife's trunk though as I forgot yesterday when I cleaned and vacuumed the inside. Also detailed the tires and rims on both cars. (The rims needed it.) They actually look okay now.

Am getting into finding the right doctor for My Darling. Her back is no better. (Does better at times but she deserves a better quality of life.) My oldest daughter gave me a couple surgeons who perform these type surgeries. They are supposed to be the top in their craft. May the Lord guide me to pick the right one.....

Sott's HOF plaque features a Cardinals cap. I had wondered as I think he was upset with the Cards over the way his injury was treated when he left. BTW Pitino recruited him for UK in hoops.

I thought I might hear from you on Rolen, Bernie. Yes, the bulk of his achievements were in St Louis so that’s fitting that he’d wear a Cards cap.

I was a-bit surprised he made the Hall. No single statistic really jumped out. He had fewer hits than Ken Boyer, a lower life time batting average and a few more home runs, for example. And Boyer at his peak was a League MVP, which Rolen never was. And Boyer never made it. But Rolen always seemed like a good guy so I’m happy for him.

The first MLB game I ever saw, Boyer missed a ground ball a small kid like me could have caught. Probably unfair of me, but I never got over it. Part of the time, the Cards had the MV3 as the announcers used to say. Edmonds, Puhols and Rolen. That cost him some votes. His overall numbers were hurt by the injury. He was never the same afterwards. The saber metric number that says you are a likely HOFer is 100 and his score is 99, so he is not top of the class. His last 5 or 6 years would have likely helped his overall numbers had he been healthy.
In all of sports, baseball and third base in particular was my first love.

Bernie, I’m still pissed that my boyhood favorite Vada Pinson never got any serious consideration for the Hall of Fame. Despite tailing off late in his career he had nearly 2,800 hits, around 260 HR, stole 300-plus bases and was a gold glove center fielder on an era when the NL had Mays, Aaron, Clemente, Robinson, etc. He’s hurt in sabermetrics by the fact he didn’t walk much. Hell, I never went to Crosley to see him walk, but I did see him patrol centerfield like an artist of the game.

Vada never came close to making the HOF, and I’m sure someone can make the case that he didn’t deserve it. But that won’t convince me.

His score is 95, so he is close. I was a Card fan, but I also checked the Reds boxscores to see what Vada did. I was at one game where Jim Brosnan (also an author) was warming up. There weren't many people at the game, so his fastball sounded like a cannon popping in the catchers glove. Ever read anything by him?

Oh yeah. The Long Season is a minor baseball classic —sort of paving the way for Bouton’s Ball Four though no where near as controversial. And of course I remember him from my very early years as a Reds fan.

Pennant Race was about the Reds Winning in 61. When traded to the White Sox, they told him no more books, so he retired.

Sunny and 70.5°F and we are supposed to get to 89° with 30% chance of rain. Good late July day.

I have company from Winston Salem, NC today. My good friend Basil. He is a professor of math. He was born in Amman Jordan and moved out as Christians were treaded poorly and advancement in the military and police was basically banned unless you were Muslim. He still has some family there and he goes over every few years. He got his Ph.D. from UNC. We must forgive him for bad choices in schools!

You all enjoy your Monday.

"And this one belongs to the Reds"

The Cards are second in all of baseball in hard hit rate (the Reds are last in the NL central), yet the Cards can't win for losing. It goes to show you, defense, fundamentals and pitching are king. The Cards are poor to bad in all 3 things. The D has made the pitching even worse than it is. It's not just errors, it's also plays recorded as hits that a good fielder would have made. This is the worst Cards baseball I have ever seen in those 3 areas.

I was watching that game on TV. Was already a fan of his, but more so after that.
I remember that too. I was 15 and heavily into baseball and vividly remember that. I remember wanting those guys trying to light the flag beat. I was young but had a great sense of country early.

My run-in with leadership now stems from honoring the Army and not the unit when the unit fails in Army standards.

Good morning D-league.

Sweltering in the east. What they say is true —it’s the humidity, especially in DC where it pegs at 90 percent plus for three months.

Reds just can’t get over the jump with the Brewers. The games are all close, but that one at bat, that one pitch that it takes to win a tight game goes against them-at least so far.

Meanwhile, I’m stuck on the subway —a train malfunction up the line ahead of us. Metro, as the system is called, is notoriously incompetent. It’ll never change.

Hope you all have a smooth day.

Good morning all,

Working from home today. (Homework, what a concept.) Just drudgery. Pulling teeth is easier but all is good in the hood.

Have a great day!
A little tip for those of you who are living/working in areas where it's hard to get a carry permit or your wife is reluctant to carry. Get her a tootsie roll pop, one of those candies with a handle. Avoid situations if at all possible, but in an emergency, hold the candy in your palm with the handle sticking out between fingers. A good poke to the neck or eye should give her time to run away. Even a lib city can't outlaw candy in her purse.

Get her one of these. They can go on planes, trains and automobiles because they are considered medical devices. There are many types including light aircraft aluminum ones that are pretty sturdy. Just can't have the ones that conceal anything.
