D-League

Good morning D-League

We have 74° down here with mostly sunny skies. We have a chance of scattered showers this afternoon and the high should hit 89°. My weather map does not show any tropical disturbances off the coast. It has been a very quiet summer.

I am going to go around the house a hit a few spots with round up to zap the weeds before they get out of hand. With this rain it is easy to let them go. It should be dry enough to give them a good soaking with my sprayer.

Trust all are doing well and prospering. Keep the Faith.

@warrior-cat

I ran across an old photo. Teaching the grand kids how to bait a hook and catch a fish. Teach them how to fish and they will never go hungry. LOL

Sir,

You mention that, and this was from a couple weeks ago. The BB and his cousin Little BB. Known as the Booger Butt and Little Booger Butt. (Per the Little Booger Butt.)

I called her Little Booger and she stated; "No Papa, I am Little Booger Butt." What could I do, I said; Okay Little Booger Butt...

It is 70.9°F here and was down to 68° this morning at 6:00 AM. That is a good start for an August morning. We are cloudy but only a, get this, 2% chance of rain. I think that that is a mistake and is missing a 0. We are supposed to top out at 81° so that is also good for an August day.

My yard man did the yard yesterday. It is weird having someone do the yard when I have always done it. He mowed it a different direction each time which is pretty neat and he does my yard and my neighbor's yard at the same time and it takes the man less than an hour.

You all have a good Tuesday.

My yard man is having a difficult time keeping helpers. He usually runs with a crew of 3. One cuts, one edges and one uses the blower. But last month he has had to do it all.

He hired a couple of young men (brothers) to help and they recently moved down from New Jersey. With their parents. They did not last the very first yard of the day. It was only 8 o'clock and they couldn't take the heat or humidity. So they called for their mother to come get them. I know my yard man was upset but I had to laugh. These boys need to head back up North.

I've had 5 boxers and never had an issue with it, but a quick google shows you are correct that it is an issue with many. Kind of surprised me.

Thank God! That is good to hear. In the last 15 years they started adding things to dog food that are just not meant for most dogs to eat. Back in the 70s they had meat in the food. Actual meat. Now they put things in that whole breeds of dogs are allergic to like peas and pea protein. There are several breeds that can't digest it.

What started this is a "treat" that was given to our dog. Now, she is old mind you, and this type of treat was fine last week. No telling what was in this batch. We need to keep it more simple for her from here forward and she's gonna let me know about it for the rest of her life. (She always blames me when her food has to be restricted.)

Just got sick again, so we're gonna see the vet asap. Made it all night without being sick, so we thought she had gotten past it til this morning. Then settled down... now sick again.

She's been a great friend. Hate to lose her

On the feel good side of things, about people helping people, the next door neighbor to one of our properties mowed one of our properties yesterday before I could get to it this week. Didn't ask him. Didn't owe me anything. Just mowed it for us. It wasn't quite as high as where we mow it, but it is appreciated still.

Tried to get a service to mow it, but no one would take us on since we couldn't do a full year contract. Didn't think we'd keep it this long, but it needs a little fixing up before we sell it, and we can't get contractors to show up to do the work we need em to do.

Good morning D-League. Cool day in the east as I ride the subway downtown.

... and my son is out in Joshua Tree. He sent me some eerie photos of Cap Rock, the spot where Gram Parsons’ manager burned, or tried to burn, his body. Looks like a fitting spot to be incinerated, or as much as any spot can be.

How do I not know this story...? Seems I should, but I don't

Girthang -- It's a hell of a yarn, captured in the Indie movie "Grand Theft Parsons."

The short version - at some point in his last year Gram Parsons and his manager, whose last name was Kaufman, were talking about what they wanted to happen after they died. Parsons, in part to keep his remains out of the hands of a step-father he didn't like, said he wanted to be burned and his ashes scattered in the weird beauty of Joshua Tree. Then he ODs at 26. Kaufman, through an amazing effort manages to steal his body from an airfield where it was waiting to be shipped back to Georgia. He races to Joshua Tree, douses the casket in gasoline, and at least partially burned the body.

Here's a longer account:

The vet is a good idea. Jan is not a vet, but she knows quite a bit. She suggested bone broth or boiled chicken and rice. Most vets don't study a lot of nutrition and some of the dog food companies are big donors to the vet schools, so vets tend to push their brands.

Yep, I was prepared for Florida yard work because I was raised by a Kentucky tobacco farmer. The biggest reason I want to college was to not have to do that the rest of my life.

The Florida heat is no worse than Kentucky, but the humidity is very oppressive. But mowing the yard in Florida was rewarded an hour later by a dive into the pool and a good drink to freshen up the old body.

The cutting and housing of tobacco was hot and humid but the tobacco gum would stick the hairs of you arms or legs together, so you had to wear a long sleave shirt and long pants. Plus get into a tobacco barn and you would have to fight off the wasps.

The folks that I really feel for in Florida are the guys that work on roofs. I can't imagine just how darned hot they get.

That is sad but it is also angering. How long is the "pansie" generation going to be among us.... A generation? Goodness I hope not.

I ask myself, why am I here. Will I feed myself today or will someone else feed me.... That has always been the basis to keep me going...

The humidity is the killer for those not use to it. It is mid 80's right now but I am sweating drops. I just came back inside after hitting the weeds with Round Up. Most of the spots I sprayed were shady but the humidity took the vinegar out of me. I am use to it so I shake it off but my wife isn't. She has a hard time with the humidity.

Kentucky suits her fine and is her favorite weather.

Speaking of working on roofs. You nailed it. It takes a certain person to do that work. And lots of fluids. An ER doctor once told me that is the most common patient in his ER, work related. And most have only being doing roofing for a short period of time. You burn out fast. I am about to finish up my 3rd quart of water this morning. Now comes the pool.

Sir,

I like Kentucky weather as well but I find here in Virginia it is very similar except, it doesn't seem to get as bitterly cold as I remember Kentucky getting at times. There are four distinct seasons here, as I type my oldest daughter is working in Miami this week. (Finishes today to return home tomorrow.) She stated she forgot what paradise was like. (I was never much for Miami at all but the weather I liked. I have been content in many climates for long periods of time. Just about my only turn-off is Michigan weather and not being able to be near enough to an ocean to drive there and back in a day. My darling and I truly enjoy what the ocean provides. ;)

You're right about that. They've been pushing us towards a brand they sell but that my dog can't eat. Very frustrating.

Thank you. Yes, we will go that direction this afternoon. Picking up some chicken and such while the vets checking to see if she has any foreign objects in her GI tract we don't know about.

Now that is a true friend.

I misunderstood the original statement (though I still knew nothing of the tale) that someone set his body on fire. I wasn't sure if it was Parsons self immolating or his manager, nor if he was being set on fire by his manager while still alive. All thoughts racing through my creative mind at once.... Thank you for this. I will read it this evening when I have some time to really absorb it.

You bet.

Here's a photo my son took last night of Cap Rock, the spot where the attempted cremation of Gram occurred. Beautiful spot. My son says the sky was more full of stars than he's ever seen, and he and his girlfriend counted any number of shooting stars.

Since some of you love snakes (looking at you BBUK) and others like hiking.

I think I'd be up for that hike, if I could find my old Justin boots I wore on the pipeline.

Pretty well varmint-proof and impenetrable by welding sparks or hot metal slag from acetylene torch cuts.

I got work to do.... Have to replace all five filters on our reverse osmosis system today. (Cleaning everything is the key.) Will start in a short while. (Been busy.) Three filters are changed annually but the two filters/ one membrane are changed every two to four years. Just good drinking water and very well worth it...

We're considering installing one at our place. My wife is finally interested now that the prices have gone up on everything.

I can vouch, it don't get much hotter than being in the top of a barn housing tobacco. Then again, it wasn't any better on the lower tier poles either, having to dodge tobacco sliding off sticks. It's probably a good thing that people don't grow tobacco like they use to, they wouldn't be able to find help.

Too many people today would rather have someone give them the fish, then actually learn to fish.

I bought the APEC ROES-50 over three years ago and installed it myself under our sink. It is supposed to make 50 gallons a day of water if needed. (I doubt we ever came near that even when we had four adults and two babies in the house but the water is terrific. (Some want the system that adds minerals but there is really no need. I did some serious research back then.) There is a lot of information online and you can get good deals. (So many types)

I actually bought the system from Lowe's online but I bought the filters from the main site when it was time. (I also bought the refrigerator adapter at the same time. The ice is super as well. (The installation is not that bad but I have the plastic waterlines and sure do wish I had copper waterlines.) (I replaced the three filters at about a year and a half and they needed it. This time I have all five.) (Oh, I did not replace the filters today, had several things come up unexpectedly. Will try again tomorrow.) (It does take about three gallons of water to make one gallon of the pure stuff.)

I bought it initially at the time because I was carrying cases and cases of bottled water up two flights of steps nearly daily. The water compared to any bottled water I have ever tasted cannot be compared. It is so very pure.

Thank you for this information! I will share it with my wife in the morning. It should help in deciding

Taking a work break, and thinking about our earlier discussion of Gram Parsons and Joshua Tree, I looked up his live take on a Hank Williams classic. Man, what a better assortment of music we'd have to draw on if Hank and Gram had lived long lives to pursue their craft.
Thanks for the video. I could listen to Gram Parsons all day and night. He died much too young but the demons of drugs got him. Emmy Lou Harris made some great music with him and she is still going strong. They were my favorite combo of all time. Emmy Lou makes everybody sound better.

When it comes to singing "You Win Again", my favorite artist for that song would have to be Jerry Lee Lewis and his Pentecostal style piano playing.

Good morning, D-League!

May God bring new understanding of His creation to you this 4th day of His week! Making breakfast for the family, because he's given me one more day to do so. Very thankful for it and for you!

Should be a cool and hopefully productive day in this little nook of KY! 61° and foggy here near the water, on the way to 80° or so. Go Cats!

Sawnee - Yep, I love the Jerry Lee Lewis version of You Win Again. Almost referenced it in my post. Thanks for adding.

Another cool day in the east. Heading into DC on the train.

I hope all D-Leaguers have a great day.
