D-League

Wow! If I remember correctly, we received deployment orders around Thanksgiving or thereabouts back in 1990. I remember watching final game on AFN very early morning Central European Time in October?. Can't forget Chris Sabo: "We beat 'em fair and square".

What a cluster f*ck loading up all those tracks on ships out of Bremerhaven back then. Ah, good old days...........
I may have seen those very ships unloaded. For a while in November the arrival of units assigned to VII Corps was big news.

By then I’d been in the region about two months. I left the states in September and didn’t get back to the states until St. Patrick’s Day -March 17.

Good morning from ATX. Currently 77°F and clear. Today's high may reach 98°F. Hope we stay under 100°F. Slight chance for showers today and tomorrow. Lotsa clouds yesterday, but no rain.

Enjoyed another beat-down last night. Cats off today. Heard about a possible boat trip?

Heading out for a hike around 5:45 am. Happy Friday, y'all.

Wishing happiness and health for all our fellow D-League members.

I’ve been a Reds fan since 1962. The only time the Reds won it all since the Big Red Machine days when I was a teenager was 1990- and I was in Baghdad the entire series, with a blackout by Saddam of all incoming communications. Never saw an inning and didn’t even know the Reds had won for a couple weeks after. How’s that for luck?
Been a Reds fan from the beginning. Born in 57 so I guess since about the same time frame as you. Yeah, I missed the 1990 WS as well sitting in the middle of the Saudi Desert preparing for the Gulf War to start. We got our information from the Stars and Stripes newspaper, and I got word of their sweep of the A's after the fact because we did not get those papers daily. Got them in bundles of successive days or weeks.

A shout out to Wheeler. For a lot of the Rafters crowd he’s a whipping boy. But he’s a unique talent in the college ranks in terms of speed and ability to find the right teammate at the right time and place.

14pts 10 assists 1 turnover tonight.
I agree, he gets a bad rap because of his speed and gets out of control sometimes (not often) but, that's what many focus on. He shifts gears of movement faster than most and I believe sometimes his teammates have a hard time getting in position enough to help him.

Good morning folks. Watching the replay of the Cats game last night. The guys just went in a 24-0 run which included 4 threes. I know those weren’t falling earlier so good to see that part of the game come around a bit.

Glad it’s Friday. Long week at work. (Wheeler just got down the court faster than anybody this side of John Wall and nailed Livingston in the chest for an open 3. Wow. )

Hope you all have a good day.

Starting as a Reds fan in 1962, you missed a great Reds season in 1961. One of my all time favorite teams. Unfortunately they ran into the New York Yankees in the World Series and lost the series 4-1. The Yankees won 109 games that year and had the M&M boys locked in a home run battle until Mantle got injured. Maris broke the Babe's record that season. That Yankee team had it all.

One thing I remember about that World Series is it was during the cold war with the Soviets and the Press termed it the "Reds vs. Yanks" You could do stuff like that back then. Now someone would be offended. But it was a tremendous year for the Reds. Some of my all time favorite Reds were on that team.

Good morning D-League. It's currently 64° and sunny here in Eastern Kentucky. This afternoon will bring mostly sunny skies and a high of 79°.

Today my daughter moves into her dorm. I'm excited for her to start the next chapter of her life.

Everyone stay safe on this Friday.

Sawnee: In 1961, my dad, a lifetime Kentuckian from Bracken County, was working a pipeline job in upstate New York, not far from Niagara Falls (Judge Collinsworth, Lincoln's dad and Cris's granddad was working for my dad) and so we were in the Yankees TV and radio market. And in my youthful (I was 5) ignorance I actually was briefly a Yankees fan and rooted AGAINST the Reds in that series. That changed when we moved back to Northeastern Kentucky in 1962.

Morning Legionnaires!

Today's high will be in the high 90's but right now at 70° so...Look Out Bass!
Leaving here in about 20 minutes or so for about a 3-hour tour before it starts getting hot. Luckly just wading so...the minnow won't get lost.

Good Morning,

My Darling and I are headed to Maryland to see what we can do to lessen the population of fish and clams. A new place so who knows. I am printing our licenses now... Have a great day!
Man, now I have to pray for bass, regular fish and clams. You guys are working me hard.

It is 71.2°F and sunny in Smiths Grove. It is supposed to get to 82° and no rain until next Tuesday. That is a pretty good day for mid August in South Central Kentucky. I will love it.

I will get off here and edit last nights game. You all have a good Friday.

On the topic of baseball nostalgia, and for Bernie: From my personal baseball card stash. I collected in the 1960s but inherited hundreds of cards from the late 1950s from an uncle and had the good sense to hold on to them. This is in poor condition, but glad to have it.

It was easy to be a Yankee fan in our youth. I was a huge Yankee fan growing up. The reason was it was the first major league team I saw and a man by the name of Joe DiMaggio and a very young teenager by the name of Mickey Mantle were on the team. I was awe struck as a 6 year old kid. Mantle hit balls so hard they almost went out of sight. The Yanks held Spring Training in St Pete, FL and daddy took me down for a few of their workouts and I saw a game. I was a boy in heaven.

St Louis also trained in St Pete then and I might have been a Cardinal fan had we gone to see them. But daddy wanted me to see Joe DiMaggio as he was winding down his career. Daddy was a huge Cincinnati Reds fan. All of his life, having grown up in Eastern Kentucky. Cincinnati trained in Tampa back then as did the Chicago White Sox. We saw a lot of their Spring Training games too.

Good morning, D-League!

Hope this finds yall well and good. The world is going in the "toelet"... Fibs finally and blatantly confirm that they are merely a political arm for the far left and for globalism. DOJ falling right in line with that. Social credit scoring system is on its way, so get any conflicting posts deleted and put your curbs on so as not to offend the state. Orwell and the founding fathers told us it would come. Even Ron Paul and others more recently did as well. We didn't listen

It's been a pleasure to know the fine people here. Made it feel like home like it hasn't in over a decade. Gave me hope for the country and the commonwealth. I'm a little down right now, but just got to get things done and know our Father in heaven has the best interests at heart for those who love Him, as I most assuredly do.

May He bless you all exceedingly!

Biden is not bringing in 87,000 new IRS jobs to increase his new job numbers. Especially with their emphasis on being able to legally own and use a firearm. And We The People just sleep walk through life.

I used to have that card. I had a ton of cards when I went to Viet Nam. Mom was cleaning out the garage and gave them to a cousin. He opened a business, mostly with my cards. She missed one shoe box that was about half full, so I still have a few. A McCovey rookie card is probably the best.

Mine too. My collection of thousands of baseball cards disappeared when I left for the Army. I managed to salvage a few that were not in the cigar boxes stored in my closet. One of them was a Babe Ruth my daddy gave to me. 1927. I still have it

He just needs to grow up
I am past thinking Caliapari will grow up. His ego is all about him and he pops off his mouth to a point I don't listen to what he says. I don't listen to pre-game or post game interviews with him or any other interview where he is speaking. He is the first UK basketball coach I have completely tuned out.

No one will dispute UK is a basketball school and has been since the late 1940's. But it is not a basketball only school. Calipari can get his blessed practice facility or what ever he lusts for this time without disparaging the UK football program. It was uncalled for and tacky. Let the Tennessee Vols basketball coach do that but our sports program should be like family and you don't talk bad about family in the media or press. You certainly don't belittle them when they are going to and winning bowl games. You shut the door and have a little talk, privately.

UK football ws the laughing stock of the SEC for 50 years or more. It is not anymore thanks to Stoops and his team. Calipari should be thankful of that and not be envious. But he is John Calipari and his motor mouth shows his true self.

Fishing report:

Was there (Bald Pond) almost exactly 3 hours. Hooked 12 and landed 8. One of the 8 was a 7lb catfish. Gave me a good fight. The rest were bass with the biggest being about 3 lbs. It was a good morning.

What ocean are you fishing in???? We changed course/ My Darlings mind and ended up near Virginia Beach. Still here, waiting for the fish to arrive...

Going back to baseball cards and memorabilia, many years ago my MIL showed me a yearbook from the Yankees (mid to late 50's I think) that she found in the attic from where they used to live in New York. Of course, the yearbooks back then had the pictures of all of the players on the team and fans would try to get autographs from the players in the book. Apparently, the former residents forgot it and left it there and she brought it here with her to Oklahoma. I don't remember all of the players that had signed the book, but I do remember Whitey Ford's and Yogi Berra's signature being two of them.

I ask her then and there to let me hold it for her because her house at that time was already a mess with 27 cats (more later) and that was a piece of history needing protecting. She said no that it would be ok. It is the same house that just burned, and I don't think they recovered the book. I seriously doubt they did because when we asked, she said she thinks so. She would have known. My wife reminded her that I tried to secure it from her years ago to protect it and of course she denies that conversation ever happened.

Brutal to lose something like that Warrior.
My most devastating loss:
When I was a kid I was fascinated by the Civil War and was always carrying a book on the topic around. One day my grandmother noticed and said she had something to show me.
Among a bunch of family papers were two gems: Daguerreotype portraits of her two grandfathers as young Confederate officers holding their sidearms and wearing fancy gray uniforms of the type still around early in the war. Perfect condition.
Nobody else in the family had any interest in history but her and me, so eventually she promised the whole box would be mine someday.
Bottom line: When she died I was just out of college living in Florida. I came home for the funeral but it was all hectic and sad.
When eventually I got around to asking my father if I could see mamma’s papers he said, “She didn’t have anything of value. It all got tossed.”
I held out hope that maybe one of my aunts had saved the photos, but they never surfaced.

Scully's catches of the day!

Kept 5 of the 8 caught today and put them on ice until later for wife to filet. Her mother and brother are coming over tomorrow so...vegetarians' meals will be prepared.

On another topic, anyone know what movie my first sentence comes from?

Before my wife and I started fileting the fish she grabbed a filet stand/board I made for her to make it easier. After she set it down, she saw this where her hand had been and freaked out. She is deathly afraid of spiders and this one just made her drink a strong drink tonight.

Thanks to my wife I was able to save very valuable personal papers my mother had saved over the years. Some dating back to the late 1800's and most very early 1900's.

Mother had some very nice cedar chests that she kept her personal papers in. My siblings wanted the cedar chests. They arranged a clean out party at mom's house and I had to be on a business trip so my wife went in my place to help clean up and throw out. The cedar chest was emptied and mom's personal papers were piled up in a corner to be taken out back and burned in the barrel.

The papers and other things were meticulously kept and in order. Things in the large pile included many vintage post cards dated late 1800's and early 1900's. Love letters between my grandfather and grandmother over a 5 year period from 1900 to 1905. Various legal documents, one included my g-grandfathers land grant for homestead property when Chester A Arthur was President.

One letter was of particular importance and dear to me as it showed what life was like living in the rural South in 1919. My grandfather was a citrus grower and he would harvest his crop then go to other areas of the state and help other growers harvest theirs. That was common. Growers helping each other. One year he went over to Lake Wales to help a grower and was gone from home about two weeks. While he was gone grandma realized a new born calf was drinking almost all of the milk from their dairy cow and the small children did not have any milk. She wrote grandpa about the problem and he wrote back, kill the calf, the babies need milk. My mother was about 7 years old and she had an older brother who was 9 or 10. Grandpa told him to take his rifle and shoot the calf. Well Uncle Lee was attached to the calf and would not do it. So grandma wrote grandpa and let him know and grandpa told her to get the neighbor to shoot it. Kill that calf now. The babies need milk. And so it goes.

I am thankful we were able to salvage family keepsakes, I just wish my baseball cards could have been spared.

Here are a number of post cards I was able to salvage. They were headed to the barrel to be burned.

And you carry the fish in a:

croaker sack

A term used in areas of the American South ranging from South Carolina, through Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and at least northern Louisiana. The sack refers to the bag used to carry the fish. It is made of burlap and used to carry about anything you can fit in it. Even ex-wives and mother in laws. If the need arises.

Morning Legionnaires!

Weather pattern still holding at near 100° until tomorrow in which it goes back up over 100° for a few days more.

I have a correction to make. My wife told me her mother and brother are Pescatarians and not vegans or vegetarians because neither of the latter eat fish. Who knew? Who cares? I can't keep up with definitions of what people can/will eat. MIL is more of a Paininmyasscatarian. Give me my meat, deserts, and a good stiff drink then, leave me be.
