I was over in Middlesboro earlier this morning. Plan on returning in a few because I'd like to browse Middlesboro Daily News archives.

During first visit this morning, I happened across a nice 1958 Ford Fairlaine 500 at Village Square Shopping Center. Saw him again just a few minutes ago at Montgomery's Grocery in Gibson Station, VA.

Nice, oh how I love the old classics.

Mowers weren't that nice when you and I were kids. Old push rotary blade type to begin with. Then push, no self propel, and certainly no high back wheels.

When I was the age of this kid I was probably mowing 5-7 yards in the neighborhood. Probably with my Dad's Craftsman push mower (gas engine). Lots were all about an acre and it seems to begin with I was getting $3 per yard. That included trimming, sweeping, etc. A lot of the boys in the neighborhood were jealous and mad....they wanted the money too....but not the work. THEN....our next door neighborhood started paying me $5!!! I was in high cotton.

@awf .... have you ever heard of blindness due to pigeons? Or chickens?
My brother was telling me this morning about a friend of his who is totally blind in one eye. The eye specialist told him years ago (when it first happened) that it was because of pigeons. Don't know if he raised them as well...or spent time around them in the park? My brother thought that he told him one time that it was some type bacteria, etc in their droppings?
I am not positive.....but I think that the blindness is a off shoot of histoplasmosis.....I unlike many people keep my birds in open lofts 24/7/365..........about half of the front of my loft has wire on the front......I keep a light bulb under the water containers....................I have raised baby pigeons in as low as -24 degrees....I have never seen a animal freeze to death if they are properly hydrated and fed.......I have one friend who's son came down with histoplosmosis......it was so bad that if the wind was blowing the wrong way the kid would have an episode.....he got out of the game and his son got better.....I am one of those old crusty bastards that doesn't hardly ever gets sick.........I am and have been allergic to pigeon dust for years.........I just don't let the lofts get dirty or dusty......the same bacterial grows in compost piles and can be just as dangerous......so be careful turning dry compost........

Since I just replied to Ohio Colonel about a topic pertaining to pigeons.......I took my birds to Radcliff, KY on the southend.......I cut my birds loose in a 15 mph cross wind out of the NW......I live 1/4 mile from the GE plant.......I hauled ass coming home and the cotton pickers beat us home.........the first race (205mi) is supposed to be Saturday....but with rain I am guessing they will postpone till Sunday.....I will take them 25-30 miles each day till then...........I have them cranked up for sure......I pointed the south on purpose to see what they did........by the time they were 10 yards out they was turning to the north and gone in maybe 30 seconds........usually they will circle a few times at a new location......they did the same thing from Franklin, KY..........I am 111.031 miles from the release point in Franklin.....2 hrs 40 minutes with a 14 mph head wind......I might not win this weekend......but I bet my birds are close to the front when the yards per minute are posted.....

My cousin lives close by. His place is located less than 500 feet from lower end of Ambassador Shores Dr, just across the water.
It has been 25-30 yrs ago when I built for him.......he sold it a few years ago......I was fishing down there this summer and thought about walking up the hill and seeing how the treated materials have held up.......I cut the floor boards so it was in the 8 sections of the octagon.....My friend's father live down along there Dick Gordon.....and one of my neighbors who just passed away had a place there where you turn down to the boat ramp...........

I worked for Orkin for about three years. I did a lot of bird and bat work. That is why I remembered it. I wore a filtered mask and other protective equipment many times. The worst were catholic church steeples....

I went to St. Dennis grade school for a couple of years until they decided I was retarded.......the janitor of the school and church had 10 children....they live in a house across Cane Run Rd that the diocese owned.....the old church had two bell towers that were probably 75' tall......part of my problems in school was there was a very large flock of mostly white pigeons that lived in those bell towers........I spent all of my time staring at the pigeons and lusting for those white ones......Mr. Hartlage took me up there one time........he had it decked out for his flock of pigeons.......he was harvesting the squabs to help feed his family..........those steeples didn't ever need to cleaned .......he scraped his lofts every day.......as did most old timers did back then.......everyone thought they were doves but even then, I knew different.......old boy and his family were eating as well or better than a lot of the people in the community..........back then it was mostly a farming community........

I have to make a retraction......I sent him a message to take a picture of the car and send it to me.......he sold it last year......he retired and sold it to purchase a big ass travel home thingy.....I would rather have the car.......

Das kuchen meinen favorit ist. That is my favorite cake.

Directly translated: That cake my favorite is.

Now you got me wanting one. Have to make a trip out today anyways, I think I will just find out what local grocery store has one. (Too lazy to learn to make it myself.)
That's why English is the superior language. In German someone could surmise from the statement that the cake is ones favorite thing. English ensures the reader understands it is merely his favorite cake.

Do the right thing. Speak English.

You work for Orkin in Middlesboro?

No, E-Town. I knew a guy who used to own Terminix in Middlesboro years and years ago but that was before I joined the Army. His name was Eddie Davis (I think it was Eddie, it was a long time ago.) I worked for Orkin after I got out, then went to work for Terminix in Louisville.(Same manager)

Did you work at the Pinewood Rd office off Poplar Level Rd?

No, I worked out of the office off Dixie Hwy, I knew all those guys there though.

I used to know a Doug Lovall and John Ackerman that worked out of that office as salesman along with most of the technicians, One technician was Joe Vowels he was a good guy who worked hard (I knew him at Orkin too.), John and Doug were some horses in the bug business in Louisville. They opened their own company. Were doing very well. (A couple years after I opened my business. I think I gave them the idea.)(They had some good connections with big business in Louisville. Crazy not to have opened their own company sooner, they sold a half million a year for Terminix. (This was in the late 80's through the 90's..)

Beautiful Spring day here in the Buckeye State. Getting into late April. Grass has been growing like weeds...flowers up and blooming. My type of year. Might mow at least the yard part of the property in that it's been close to a week and it needs it. So, maybe later today when it warms up a bit....uh.....strike that.....not a beautiful Spring day....can't even see the grass....blooming flowers are covered in snow (probably dead from the cold).....an inch or two of heavy white stuff out there.

Beautiful Spring day here in the Buckeye State to sit in my Lay Z Boy and read a good book.

I know, right?

  • I woke up this morning expecting to do my normal routine.
    • Rub eyes once
    • Look out the bedroom window at the day
    • Scratch twice.
      • Well, you get the idea.
  • Saw the snow and had to rub my eyes twice
    • Let me say the double eye rub, threw off my routine in a big way.
    • I figured the only thing to do was go back to bed and hope for a "routine reset."
  • Ok, reset accomplished.
    • Everything rubbed and scratched in the correct order.
      • Oh yeah, hands washed and sanitized.
  • Time for work.

Good morning D League

We expect a nice weather day this Wednesday the 21st of April. It is 68° with winds NW at 5 mph and humidity of 83%. By mid afternoon it will reach 76° with Winds NW at 12 mph and humidity will fall to 55%. UV Index, 9 of 10. A perfect day for fishing, going to the beach or just piddling around. Or you can just put the top down and take a country drive. Anything other than working inside.

I trust all have a great day

My thoughts exactly. About 1 1/2 maybe 2 inches. Not the latest snow in memory but close. We had light snow on Derby Day back in 1990ish.

Good morning from Shawanee, TN. Currently 37°F and cloudy. Warming to 47°F later. Freeze warning tonight with a chance for snow.

I might ride out to Harlan later today. Plan on hitting up Rax and visiting downtown for pictures. May run into a few folks I know. Enjoying myself so far.

Wishing happiness and health for all our fellow D-League members.

It was a cold 34°F when I got up. No snow to see but it is still only 38.7°. I need to mow but we got .10 inches of rain so I doubt it will get mowed today.

I have company the next three days from Massachusetts. She is my best friends widow.

You all enjoy one of our last cold days.
