Last fire of the year for St. Patrick's Day even though it's not all that cold out. Tradition. I'm torn between watching The Quiet Man with John Wayne or our standard The Commitments. Irish flicks. We decided the hell with the bar scene this year.

All of my uncles smoked Camel's. It was the number one brand in those days. One uncle smoked 3 packs a day and started when he was about 10 years old. He lived to be 74 when the BIG C got him. The last time I talked to him he said I curse the day I smoke my first Camel. (the only cigarette he smoked in his life was a Camel-unfiltered) Like most men who served in combat during WWII he was hooked on cigarettes.

When I went into the army we got in line to pick up our clothing, equipment etc. One line was for cigarettes and I was offered a carton of either Camel, Winston or Salem. I asked the trainee in line behind me which one he wanted and he said Winston. I picked up a carton and gave them to him. When I was a student at UK cigarettes were available free all over campus. The cigarette brands would pass them out in a 4 to a pack samples. You could grab a handful. I never did. They would also sponsor "smokers" at the fraternity house. This was the early 60's was smoking was cool. I am thankful I never smoked.
I smoked Marlboro's for about 5 years. Last 2 years of high school and first three years of the Army. When my 2 mile run times started getting slower I quit. You see, I am very competitive and had never been beaten in any 2 mile run on the PT test. So, when people started getting closer I had to quit. Was never beaten once in a 2 mile run in any unit I was in. Even up to my last one when I was 39 years old getting close to retirement. Ran a 12 minute 14 second 2 mile on my last one. Best one ever was 10 minute 47 seconds in Germany.

Smoking was very common and popular when I was in the Army. I was the only Drill Sgt in my company that did not smoke. Most of the trainees smoked and you sure could tell the few trainees who did not smoke from their performance. We ran them a mile every morning before breakfast in combat boots and many of the smokers puked their guts out before serving them mess. The Hog Platoon (the fat ones) had to do the mile run and what we called the Daily Dozen. Smokers who were in with the Hogs just about died but they sure lost the weight fast. You could see it melt off of them as they coughed their lungs out.

Coach Cal comin up on ESPN show
I refuse to listen to ESPN for a while. They have pissed me off with their bias.

yesterday on the GameDay they turned me off so bad that I can't stand the biased dudes.

It now turns out that they actually knew what they were predicting. They have a direct conduit to the selection committee and they probably influences them.

Before the UK vs UT game they named the 4 1 seeds. They got all damned 4.

I ran a 10:20 in the two mile, coming out of AIT, but could only run a 6:10 mile coming out of basic. Shows how much better shape I was in after AIT than I was in basic. We ran everywhere in AIT. Thought I would die. They were throwing guys into the back of cattle cars every time we ran some place. I swore I would never fall out of a formation. It was tough for me because I had hurt my knees in HS playing ball and they would swell up almost every day. Military pushed me over the edge. That is why they have both been replaced. I never could have run the times you did, at almost 40.

At one point in my career when not in the field I was running (in the evenings) 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2 miles a day as a daily routine with a one day break after the second 2 mile day. Was competing in 10K races and ran a few half marathons. Won the Law day 10K race 3 years in a row at Ft. Campbell back in the early 80's.

That's great. I stayed in shape, but I had to use a bicycle. My knees were just shot. I always hated running, simply because my knees hurt so badly. Getting them replaced was the best thing I ever did.

Running cleared my mind and let me just focus on one thing, running. It was quite liberating. Don't run now, dealing with Plantar Fasciitis so, I usually do my strength training 3 days a week and a martial arts workout 3 days a week. Need to get back on the softball field this year so, praying to get this resolved. At 61 God has blessed to be able to still do the things I do. Can still do the splits, kick above my head, and move quite free and without too much effort.

Up too early.

Have to pick up Dad from dialysis at 1100 and take him to an appointment. This one is for routine maintenance so it won't be too bad.

Even before we lost Saturday the powers that be were talking about the 3 ACC teams and the Zags being 1 seeds. We probably would have just been a higher 2 seed if we had won.

Typical fake news playbook move of simultaneously pumping up UNC wins over Duke, even though they were without Zion, and downplaying or dismissing Duke's losses because they were without Zion.

Good Monday morning D.
  • Love this time of year. 4 day work week...taking Friday off. Might get in a round of golf in the morning beforehand.
  • Every time I see Abilene (Christian) I start singing "Oh Maybellene, why caint chu be true...
  • 7/10 game will be tough regardless, but I'm pretty confident UK will prevail.
  • No complaints with the bracket. I don't give an ish about any other teams... 3 teams from the ACC does seem a little over the top. All three are good...one of them should've been a two tho. And Tennessee should've been the 1 before Mich St. <====anytime you lose to IU twice that should automatically remove you from the chances at a 1 seed.
  • Cats just gotta take care of business. Hopefully the loss to UT doesn't have an effect on their confidence. Cal seems pretty upbeat & ready to go! Good enough for me.

Nothing out run my V8 Ford

Speaking of Abilene Christian. I remember this song playing on the car radio of our 1958 Buick when I was a young, young kid. "Women there don't treat you mean..."

Well, I never found out personally, but the man seemed to know what he was talking about.

Hope it is a good day D=League.
